More than 20 years after rapid transit arrived in the Lower Mainland, turnstiles are showing up too.
A joint announcement from the federal and provincial governments, along with TransLink, committed $100 million to the initiative, which will include a smart card that allows for electronic payment of fares.
The federal government is contributing $30 million and the province is adding $40 million, which will go to what it calls Faregate, or controlled access gate.
TransLink will be on the hook for the smart cards, which can also be used on the bus system.
TransLink expects to have a contract out some time later this year. Turnstiles won't actually be installed for another 24 to 36 months.
