We are planning to replace our current car with a larger vehicle sometime this year. In preparation I called our insurance agent to check on rates for a few vehicles we are considering. I was surprised by the rates so also tried Kanetix.ca and found similar results (slightly higher but roughly same order). Hoping someone who understands Ontario insurance rates can explain:
1. Why insuring a Mitsubishi Outlander costs more than insuring a Mazda CX-9, Honda Odyssey Touring, Volvo XC90 3.2 or Hyundai Santa Fe Limited. Are Mitsubishi drivers reckless?
2. Why insuring a 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander is slightly cheaper than insuring a 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander
3. Why Hyundai Santa Fe Limited and Volvo XC90 are so much cheaper to insure than all the other models. Do XC90 safety features make up for much higher vehicle cost?
4. Why the lowest of these rates are within a couple hundred dollars of what we currently pay to insure our 2000 Mazda Protege SE which is nearing 200,000km.
Here are the lowest Kanetix quotes for each vehicle, all based on the same parameters (M6C postal code, same two drivers, same deductibles, same usage, etc.).
2007 Outlander XLS - $2450
2008 Outlander XLS - $2413
2009 Outlander XLS - $2374
2009 Outlander ES 2WD - $2326
2009 Mazda CX-9 GT AWD - $2154
2009 Honda Odyssey Touring - $2135
2007 Mazda CX-9 GT AWD - $2131
2009 Mazda CX-9 GS 2WD - $2122
2007 Mazda CX-9 GS 2WD - $2069
2007 Honda Odysssey any model - $2047
2009 Volvo XC90 3.2 2WD - $1979
2009 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited or other model - $1957
2009 Volvo XC90 3.2 AWD - $1946
Also found out that keeping our current 2000 Mazda Protege SE as a 2nd vehicle rather than trading/selling it would increase the rates below by $800+ - so I guess we will be selling.
