I guess you're not that familiar with the concept of google.

The moment I notice anything related to me on Google Street View, I'm reporting it and making sure my face, house, young cousins in elementary school, and other similar things are reported and removed - if they already haven't been. The normal Google Map option of satelite imagery is one thing - blurry to a degree on close up - but this is way more than that.
I know this sounds a bit NIMBY but I feel uncomfortable with that level of voyeurism.
If anyone's curious:
Reporting/Removing an image.
(this is for when Google Street View comes around for us. This is how it would be done for Google Street View in the 'States and I am presuming it'll be the same here.)
1) When you have a map in street view and find a problematic image, click on the "Report a Problem" text right in the map window (should be on the bottom, close to the Google copyright mark.
2) It'll bring up the Report Inappropriate Street View (http://maps.google.com/local/add/flagStreetView?cbp=1,268.64236467561926,,0,0.19013 854055670432&cb_client=maps_sv&sig=00e23e96eedde1717533e265f3e7b9560ff2fe5f010c7a e3d5c122d10e964efc7811305dd9353a16fadc04cf22e9d161 99eea3d8812d88cf7390d65ec721cf3d11c5470a667285f18e&gl=US&hl=en-US) page with a view of the image/map in question (the link's an example of what you'll see).
3) Select which category your image falls under (Privacy concerns, inappropriate content, other) and any other categories that pop up during this, fill in the form, and send away.
I am not terribly sure how long it would take to remove the stuff/have it blurred. And under any other circumstances, I would not really mind Google Street View. But I've got young ones to be concerned about, and so this option is a good one to have.

I though they are going to blur out the faces already??
The technology they use possesses an algorithm, I believe, that tries to detect shapes of faces and license plates, but it isn't perfect. I've seen some images where a few faces were blurred, but faces of diners in a restaurant window were clear as day. Sometimes there'll be a blur, but totally off the mark and missing the license plate by a wide margin.
Edit: Or they'll edit things like street signs and the faces of horses (http://gadgets.boingboing.net/2008/05/14/google-blurs-horse-f.html). Someone made a joke that their blurring technology may be as accurate as their Google translator.
Edit 2: An example (http://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=52.372062,4.899398&spn=0,359.991642&z=17&layer=c&cbll=52.37197,4.899337&panoid=bTxqWnSOVeXIBNvWDxAY9w&cbp=12,355.5050804559071,,2,17.610075384102583)of where some faces are blurred and others aren't. I love going down streets I lived in Japan, looking at old places I've been.

No one's arguing with looking at great, old places - it is an issue of looking at faces (people) that I take issue with. Some folks might not mind, but I am concerned with the privacy rights of those who haven't consented. The folks who can say yes or no - I have no issue - but those who might not have access to the technology or the like are ones that have the problem of protecting/having say over their rights.

I'm sure Google will improve the face algorithm for Canada as it seems we're the most uptight country in the world when it comes to this.
I, for one, hope they get a nice shot of my face and don't blur it!

So what if someone sees your face? Your face is out there to hundreds of people everyday when you work/drive/commute.

Thank You :)
The extent of my concern may have been taken as being a bit far. But clearly this is a agree to disagree/everyone has their POV issue. So I won't take issue with anything said.
Just to clarify: I'm not saying that everything should be blurred to bits, but raising the awareness that the "Removing an image" feature exists, and that there are just as many people who love Google Street View as those who might have a bit of concern with it.

a sick person could just as easily walk down any street or hang out near a school. seriously to all the paranoid people out there, this is pictures of public areas. it reminds me of all the concern with the original google maps - concerns of terrorists, etc. as if they couldn't already just get a regular map.

It's not like there's a camera in front of everyone's houses giving updates to the minute. Unless the Google van drove by when your kids are out of school and was in front of your house with his/her face facing the van, then people won't even know who they are or where they live.
Even then, here's the thing: If a child predator was going after your kid, I doubt that Google Street View is helping him in any way. He's probably looking out for kids walking or driving around neighbourhoods and school, not going on Google and clicking around.
Sometime you just have to stop being paranoid about trivial things like this.

People are free to say what they will, but I will happily submit a concern if I was randomly scanning streets ( I do intend to use Google Street View, make no mistake) and saw, say, what appears to be a parent coming out of a shelter for abuse victims with their kids.
You and others may say what you will about me to an extent - I don't mind. Just remember that personal attacks aren't allowed - that's all. :)

Even though I fully endorse the fact that there is no expectation of privacy when you are in public, I think this feature on Google Earth does bring up some concern with regards to what "privacy" means exactly.
And although I haven't give it much thought until now, I think it's understandable that people are concerned about having their pictures taken, then archived, in public. Although it is true that there is no expectation of privacy, I'm think that we should have some expectation to not have our moments in public recorded and archived. If you think of it from that angle, this is what happens with Google Earth if not for the facial blurring algorithm.
I mean, if the camera catches you at a less-than-graceful moment, it's going to be immortalized. Remember Star Wars kid?

 Woe is he that he happened to do his act in front of a camera and that the footage made its way across the internet and the world.
But I agree with you on the expectation of privacy: there are always points where some might not feel that it is in his/her best interests to be seen (I've already mentioned one in a previous post).
For others, though, who are out and about the city in clear view, then it is difficult to claim a desire for privacy when doing something so publicly. Like the drug deal recorded, the guy coming out of the sex shop, the guy that was puking - and the media-covered subject of the guy that was supposeably caught cheating.
The exceptions of privacy aside, if you don't want something seen in public don't do it in public. Bet the (alleged) cheater, assuming he was cheating, wishes he remembered that point. :D

FWIW, I'm not someone whose is/was an abused spouse. But I was someone who was totally for Google Street View. However, when someone in a news article brought up the point of victim abuse centres and the like, I saw their point and now am, moreless, straddle the fence on the topic of privacy. There are folks who can't really expect certain levels of privacy if they do things publically, but there are those that need to be protected.

Who wants to bet that the houses that are removed from Google Street View will become the most interesting ones? Can you imagine how the curiosity will send people's imaginations spinning? Who's so special they have their house pixellated? Are they celebrities? Is it the answer to some weirdo's conspiracy theory? Full of gold?
I can imagine people taking the time to drive over and see just what those who removed their homes have to hide. Perhaps it could even become a commercial tour operation: "The Mysterious Hidden Homes of Google".
Don't be surprised when the tour buses are lined up out front, full of tourists clicking their own photos, so they can complete their collection, and perhaps adding them to a Flickr pool of all the missing images, taken legally by individual photographers.

Some folks might not mind, but I am concerned with the privacy rights of those who haven't consented. The folks who can say yes or no - I have no issue - but those who might not have access to the technology or the like are ones that have the problem of protecting/having say over their rights.
The Google cars are traveling on public roads. What reasonable expectation of privacy could you possibly have? None, therefore zero contest is required.

I also saw the car driving around Mississauga this morning capturing images and all I could think was it's about time. I got really use to using streetview while in Melbourne Australia last year - it came in handy to find places or figure out a route when travelling around. I was surprised by how much of the rural areas were covered so I wouldn't be surprised if they cover a wide area here as well.
As for people who are against it for privacy concerns, it comes off a bit narcissistic if you think anyone other then yourself would care about finding your house via streetview. I think streetview should be the least of your worries in regards to privacy if you're using the Internet.
I take if your that concerned about your privacy then you don't use debit or credit cards, use email, a mobile phone, a landline, drive on any roads monitored with cameras, go into any stores with cameras, take public transit, rent movie or take out books from the library, talk to others in public... I think you get the point. I mean any interaction this day and age can be traced if someone really wanted to - so why is streetview any different then anything else? Is it because it's new?

Just make sure you're not picking your nose as it drives by.

What kind of car/van is it? I thought I saw one yesterday and got all excited but it was just a security company car with a camera (non-rotating) attached to the top.
If I saw one on the road I'd probably follow it around and do a lot of really stupid things.

But I've got young ones to be concerned about, and so this option is a good one to have.
wow... talk about paranoia. you sure you're not running a grow-op or something?

I personally don't understand the problem with Google View.
If someone wants to see your house they can easily drive past it. What does it matter if someone in California sees you washing your car.
Personally - if they were driving down my street I would have mooned them and then would have been proud of it.
Big deal - who cares. You are lost in the anonymity of the volume of pictures.

lol greece has banned google street view
http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/05/13/0055234&art_pos=6
"The World Privacy Forum, a US-based nonprofit research and advisory group, said the Greek decision could raise the standard for other countries and help challenge that argument. 'It only takes one country to express a dissenting opinion,' says Pam Dixon, the group's executive director. 'If Greece gets better privacy than the rest of the world then we can demand it for ourselves. That's why it's very important.'""

For Google Street View, Japanese version, it's not a wrap. It seems to be more of a wrap on the knuckles.
Google has received so many complaints about the height of its ambition, I am sorry, I mean the height of its cameras, that it will re-shoot all of its Japanese footage again. With cameras of a more modest scope.
According to some critics, Google's eagle eyes were more those of vultures, capturing the meat of rather too many private moments over too many private fences.
