I live about 300m from the grocery store. I ran out of dry mustard for this pork recipe http://www.recipezaar.com/Delicious-Pork-Marinade-271392 so thought I'd quickly drive over and pick it up. Really, there's only abt 100m on the "main road" before I turn into the store. Got pulled over. Aghhhhhh. Ticketed for expired license plate. It expired end of March. Today is April 7th. What is wrong with these cash-grabbing cops???? I even showed her the emission test thingy I had done on Monday! Seriously, shouldn't they be looking for grow-ops or something?
Oh & she gave me a warning for not being able to produce my drivers' licence. I'm sooooo mad. I think I'll go to the JP to protest this one. I feel robbed.
Anyone done the Justice of the Peace thing with success? Tips?
(BTW the pork marinade is really good)

Well. Literally it IS expired, is it not?
If you don't get caught today you will get caught tomorrow.

You just stated it yourself, you had expired tags and yet you drove on the road. You deserved the ticket.
If you live so close to the store, why didn't you just walk? Seems like being lazy owned you.

Oh my goodness, why do so many people come on here and complain when they were CLEARLY at fault. IT'S APRIL 7, NOT MARCH 31...
If they were to make an exception for you at 7 days...they would have to do it for everyone else between 1-7 days late and where do you draw the line..8,9,10 days?
It doesn't matter if you were driving 300 m or 300 miles - you broke the law
Sorry but you get no sympathy from me OP but go ahead and fight the ticket - you might get them thrown out.

So comparing your 100 m drive (which is 300 feet, you drive to go 300 feet? :| your story smells) to someone knowing 10 km means you shouldn't get a ticket. I suppose that by your logic a murderer of one person should get away because they aren't Paul Bernardo?

But MTO only sends the notice of renewal out about 8 weeks before expiry.
For some that means rushing to get the etest done, and the obtaining the plate renewal sticker.

Won't it cost more to pay someone to fight it?
Just suck it up and learn from your mistakes..
It is clearly YOUR FAULT!

Isn't the charge for an expired license sticker a strict liability offense?

And you should get special privileges why? Personally, with your attitude, I'm glad you got caught.
You do the crime, you pay the fine!!!

Either my English is pretty bad or most of the PPs are tone-deaf. My post was a rant. I could punch the wall but that would be too painful.
FWIW I was on vacation till March 26, so didn't get a chance to do it before it expired (Not that being in the country would be any guarantee that I would have done it on time ;) )
I might still do the JP thing if I can get a date that falls on my time off. It would be an interesting experience. It wouldn't cost me anything. I would probably waste that time on RFD anyway. This way I get free civic education...

The only person I feel sorry for is the cop who pulled you over.
Driving with expired plates and failing to produce your drivers license.
Wish i was there to see this happen.

Actually, my experience (and that of my wife) is that they send it out 3-4 months before.
I could be wrong, but I thought you really are supposed to get your renewal done at the beginning of the month of your birth, not by your birthdate.
Since I'm born on the 1st it is a moot point, but if the above is true, then the OP really should have had it done by March 1st. I've never had to wait for an appointment for emissions test and I go to our friendly neighborhood kiosk to renew. All in all, within 48 hours I could easily have this process completed.

Just curious OP, don't you have a husband or SO that will listen to your pointless emotional rants?
Cause RFD sure as hell doesn't want to hear them.

Cut her some slack she was in a hurry to make a nice dinner.
I doubt that she wants to rant to her husband.
You should have invited the cop for dinner.
Take it to court the experience will be good.

You drove your car to go to the store that's like a block or two down the road? That alone deserves a ticket, lol.

I hate people like you.
I work in the CS dept. in a retail store and I always have customers saying:
"Sorry if I'm past the 45 days...I went on vacation that's why I was unable to do an exchange on time"
WE DONT GIVE A F about your vacation. Rules are rules.
Sorry, you gotta bend over and pay for this one. If you haven't noticed the cops are kinda strict this year.

Clearly most people who contribute here are PERFECT and never, ever make mistakes. At least, that's what their sanctimonious replies would seem to suggest :)
Anyway, in answer to the question you actually asked, go to the court and apply for a court date. When the date comes up, go to the court, show your papers to the prosecutor and you may be allowed to walk. That is what happened me a few years back when I got a ticket for expired plates. In my case, it was simply a case of me thinking my wife had done the renewal while she thought I was taking care of it. When I got the ticket, driving her car, I got the issue resolved in less than four hours.
This is just one more case where the police are acting not in the interest of keeping the peace but more as tax collectors for the City. We owe it to society in general to fight stupid bureaucratic nonsense like this.

another similar thread where a person complained for being reprimanded because he/ she did not follow the rules/law and complaining that they should deserve some slack.
seriously, reading threads here in RFD is beginning to annoy me. maybe I should just stop reading threads.
oh yeah..it's my fault for opening this thread.
and for the record, the people here replied not because they think they are perfect...but because I believe (and I might be wrong), that they will NOT complain and post it in forums like this if they get pulled over for an expired plate.

I can understand rant if the cop pulled you over for going 5KM over the limit.

I agree with everyone.
Your break the law, the cop give you a ticket, what's wrong there?
you went for vacation, then do it before. You are mature enough to arrange your things properly, if not, then pay the ticket.
*I'm glad that you at least enjoyed your pork marinade.
