View Full Version : Elect Blackberry Trade-Up Program: $50 + cash back for your current phone

Did a few searches and this didn't come up, so here it is:
"Graduate to a Blackberry smartphone now and get cash back for your current device, plus a $50 bonus."
http://blackberrygraduate.flipswap.com
The promotional code that is required is "Graduate." Saw this on a flyer with a Bell logo, but it seems this applies to all providers (corrections welcome). The flyer also advertised a sweepstakes contest for $50,000 to pay off student loans (blackberry.com/debtfree).

It works for Canada as well, I mean even if you're just trading a phone in and not going for the Blackberry promo. They offered me 50 bucks for my phone, and free shipping so I did it. It's for canada and US, they have a local address based out of mississauga as well.

From flipswap website :
Yes! If you do not have a BlackBerry smartphone proof of purchase you will not receive your trade in credit or Promotional Bonus Amount. Quotes are only valid if you have purchased your BlackBerry smartphone within 30 days of your trade in online.
But it may be valid. I sent an email to ask if Im elligible if I already bought my BB on march 8th

Goes for about $225 on eBay if it is in good shape.
Realize the prices offered are going to be much less than they can resell it for, much like when trading in a car the dealer will never give you as much as what you could sell it for yourself.

i highly recommend people to AVOID flipswap at all cost.
Flipswap: Flipswap Cell Phone Buyback Doesn't Work As Advertised
the problem is this... they will give you a value. you send it off. if they feel that you did not accurately represent your device and choose to lower the payout, you DO NOT have the option to have the phone sent back to you. in other words, there are no checks and balances that protect you at all once they receive your device.
in fact, if you deny their counter offer once they receive the device, they have all right to not compensate you at all as per their own fine print.
scenario: they quote you $100 for "phone x". you send it, and they inspect it. after inspection, they deem it's "worse than you described" and contact you with a counter offer of $50. at this point, you cannot request they send the phone back to you. you can accept their new offer and receive a check. if you decline, they will keep the phone and send you nothing.
http://consumerist.com/5050835/flipswap-cell-phone-buyback-doesnt-work-as-advertised
the above link is an article that puts their fine print under a magnifying glass for those who dont read things through.
My thoughts: Unless you have an old school phone that you couldn't care less then it's definitely a sweet deal. But if you have a newer phone that they quote for $45, you're pretty much gambling on it because there's a chance they'll note all these problems and the worst part is, you can't get your phone back... Now is it worth to risk?

In response to that...honesty prevails, yes? It's too bad they don't have a scale evaluator. I would've been more than willing to indicate the phone was 9/10 or 7/10 whatever the case may be.
As long as they don't slimeball their way out of the $50...it's all good. I'm using a bunch of phones that are $10...and a nice one that's $29. Hopefully they're all honoured.
I have a question. The destination address is in Ontario., but the website indicates that you need to send the proof of activation to an address in the US??? Is that an option for Americains or if you are sending it in in two parts? That is...if you are including it all in the prepaid envelope/parcel, it goes to wherever the destination is indicated-in this case Ontario? It is QUITE confusing.

I think the question here is...what qualifies as proof of purchase.
The document you get when you hup from Rogers is CALLED "Proof of Purchase". It has the account info, purchase date, model of device+imei. While it has no list price associated, it should meet the requirements of the offer.
Can anybody confirm please.
Otherwise, a true receipt is a register receipt...Who gets those? It'd only be new activation receipts, or store hups where you get a receipt for $0.00 since hups are billed to the account anyway.

Here is what is posted in the FAQ's (http://blackberrygraduate.flipswap.com/consumer/app/local/FaqsPage/;jsessionid=31ADBE836EE4164139C86F3FF4C366B2.serve r2):
#
What can I return as my Proof of Purchase?
A sales invoice or packing slip are both acceptable Proofs of Purchase. The packing slip should include your name, purchase date, purchase amount, purchase model and serial numbers and should come from one of Research in Motion's carrier or channel partners. Purchase Orders, Order Confirmations and Order Acknowledgments are generally not considered acceptable Proof of Purchase.
#
How do I provide Proof of Purchase?
Send it in the box with your old device
Fax it to: 1-866-725-1191
Mail it to:
The Graduate to BlackBerry Trade Up Program - Proof of Purchase

^The FAQ linked above is what's confusing.
It clearly indicates to INCLUDE the proof of purchase in the package you are mailing off....then it ALSO says to concurrently??? fax it to that number??? Which is it?? Oh...are they just providing three different avenues for providing it? Ahh...ok that makes sense.
The ProofOfPurchase from Rogers for HUPs don't include price. That 'other document' does...but it's not titled a proof of purchase.so....? Sigh...

IMHO, this point is m00t, as the policy is, DATE OF proof of activation must be 30 BEFORE or 30 AFTER date of flipswaps receipt (which has a date printed on it itself).
Whether it takes you a week or a month to mail that out is irrelevant as long as the promo is still going on. The dates won't change on the two pieces of paper, so whenever the department evaluates your documents is equally m00t as all they're concerned with are the dates of the receipt and flipswap receipt.

The cash back price for the phones is way below market value.
Youd probably be better off selling it on eBay or Kijiji if you have anywhere near a recent phone, you'd make more than $50 difference.
Eg, they're only offering $25 for a mint W580... they fetch > $100 on eBay, and that is USD, for a locked one.

^The phones that I am trading in, though cosmetically are great...I haven't been able to sell for even $40 for over 2 years.
Meanwhile I'm getting $50 guaranteed + more than likely the estimated amount of $8-$30 for them.

In the FAQ it says:
Can I trade in more than one wireless device?
There is no limit to the number of devices you can trade in as long as you provide a BlackBerry smartphone Proof of Purchase with each trade-in.
I interpret that to mean that you can only get one $50 promotional credit per Blackberry that you buy no matter how many phones you send to them.
Am I right?
bubble.tea
Apr 8th, 2009, 11:28 AM
...you can only get one $50 promotional credit per Blackberry...
Of course that's the whole point.
what you could do however is mediate the processing of a bunch of submissions on behalf of your friends, if they find submitting forms too tedious.
So...you can submit multiple rebates, as long as EACH has it's own phone you are trading in, and EACH has it's own UNIQUE BB Eligible proof of purchase.

From the 1st Post:
Did a few searches and this didn't come up, so here it is:
"Graduate to a Blackberry smartphone now and get cash back for your current device, plus a $50 bonus."
http://blackberrygraduate.flipswap.com
The promotional code that is required is "Graduate." Saw this on a flyer with a Bell logo, but it seems this applies to all providers (corrections welcome). The flyer also advertised a sweepstakes contest for $50,000 to pay off student loans (blackberry.com/debtfree).

As long as you have a phone for the trade up program (you are qualified for the $50)... Buy the Blackberry from BB and send the proof of purchase to the tradeu program.. Thing with this current promo...is that even a CRAPPY phone, would get you the $50, which is the best deal. While you *could possibly* sell said used phone on the bst for $40/$50..the market is very slim, so a guaranteed cheque for at least $50 PLUS whatever they feel they want to throw in for your traded in cellphone (be it the stated value, or some devalued amount due to imperfections you did not care to disclose :/).
Frankly...if you have a cellphone that can't fetch you at least $25 in a bst...then you REALLY need to consider throwing it away LOL.
I'm wondering why there's no trade-in CRT Computer Monitor trade-in promo :(.

WTF???!!! I know I'm in Edmonton and this is being sent to Mississauga via snail mail, but COME ON! There aren't any customs hoops to jump through in mailing a domestic parcel. It shouldn't take any longer than 5 business days for a package to reach Mississauga, let alone 10. Methinks there's something fishy going on with my package relating to Canada Post...
*rant end*
So is anyone's order status showing that their phone has been received yet?

There is a tracking number you know.
I wouldn't rely on THEM manually updating their website. Go by the tracking and you'll be okay. I'm sure everybody and their MOTHER has sent in oodles of phones Lo these past few days. No doubt they WILL be backlogged for awhile-depending on how many employees they have.

There's no tracking no. available on there, at least none that I can see from the shipping label. I'm guessing by next week it'll turn into 'received'.

WOW..I just looked at one of my labels and was shocked there wasn't any tracking.
I kept seeing the bar code/UPC symbol and thought, "heck it says Expedited, so there must be a tracking number". Oh well...I hope these dudes don't scam everyone and say 'pkgs were lost too bad so sad' lol.

Back in January, I purchased BB Bold with the BB data plan before Rogers $5 increase.
I did the trade-up program and mentioned in this post. http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8086674&postcount=767
There was no $50 bonus at that time. This program used FedEx to send my phone to US with tracking. They take their sweet time to do each steps.
- up to 45 days after receiving your phone to evaluate your phone.
- up to 45 days after phone evaluation to send you the check. Finally, I may receive my cheque by April 24th.
- I read in other forum. They sell the trade-up phone on eBay. A buyer called up the original owner to ask question. You should remove data from your phone before sending your phone to them.
The trade-up program, that I used, ended March 31st. BB may have replaced it with the current program.

emailed them and got this reply:
"According to our records we have not as of yet received your items, but that could be due to the fact that we are currently in the middle of a move and items are being processed a bit slower than usual.
We are about a week behind in terms of our receiving department. Thank you for your patience."

^The phones that I am trading in, though cosmetically are great...I haven't been able to sell for even $40 for over 2 years.
Meanwhile I'm getting $50 guaranteed + more than likely the estimated amount of $8-$30 for them.
I'd say it blazing hot.
If you had a mint W580 and sold it on eBay you would get $75-$100 for it, guaranteed. Just go on and do a search for recently closed listings.
Just because you can't sell it on the RFT BST forum does not mean that $40 is FMV. Nowadays eBay pretty much defines FMV since it is basically the largest consumer bartering platform there is.

2-FMV?
I guess since you guarantee $75-$100 for a product then it's...guaranteed?. Care to put your money where your mouF is?
This promo has a verrry fine threshold cut-off beyond which it would benefit the person to sell it themself. AS I SAID...(sigh, why're you making me repeat myself) if the cells you have are under the $50 value, there is no way in heck you'd sell them outright for over $50 or close thereto....THEREFORE, ERGO, HERETOFORE, VIS-A-VIS, CONCORDANTLY....this promo is King! :)
Let's not get into marketing (Supply & Demand) 101 and how Fleabay has THOROUGHLY taken a cyber-DUMP on pricing of any sort of products of late.

Where'd you find this little excerpt? Care to post a link?
I just checked my account on the site, and mine is showing as "Inspected", but I'm still not getting the $50.00 promo amount. This is complete BS as I sent in all the required documentation and proper phone. I just sent off an e-mail expressing my frustration and I hope this gets resolved properly. Hopefully this is just a glitch on their end.
EDIT: Stupid me for not reading the fineprint on the bottom of the Facebook site, hopefully they'll allow me to send in a copy of my student ID after the fact and still get the $50.00 promo...

Hang on there a minute. The form that they included was painstakingly clear and itemized on what had to be included in the submission. NOWHERE did it mention anything about the student ID or the sort.
I find this whole thing quite scamalicious and slimey.
I'm REALLY ticked off. I don't want them to process my phone alone, but ship it back to me. I'd rather keep my phone that they feel is worth $12 , and give it to a nephew or niece to play around with.

They told me that i was indeed getting the $50 in mail and that it will be sent to me on the third week of may. I didn't receive anything and i finally emailed them on june 13th i believe.
I got the following message in reply.
Dear Daniel:
I apologize for any confusion regarding this matter. Unfortunately,
due to a glitch in our system your payout date for your payment was
pushed back.
Your payment check should be processed out on the third week of June.
It will be mailed out via the US Postal Service shortly thereafter.
