Plasma TVs stolen when truck taken

CRIME STOPPERS

BOB MITCHELL
STAFF REPORTER
There could be some "hot" big screen TV deals being offered in the coming days — really hot, as in stolen.

Halton Police revealed today that 270 television sets valued at $217,731 were in a trailer stolen on Saturday from a locked compound in Oakville.

Police said thieves cut the lock on the gate at a North Service Rd. yard about 12:30 a.m. and a Freightliner Tractor and trailer was driven away.

Altogether, 252 Panasonic Plasma 50" Flat Screen Televisions (model TC50PX14) and 18 Panasonic Plasma 50" Flat Screen Televisions (model TC-P50U1) were taken from AC Transport at 1221 North Service Rd. E.

The stolen Freightliner was later recovered in Mississauga, police said.

The stolen trailer, red in colour with Tennessee licence plate T964688 is still missing.

Imagine the potential profit!

Although I would not risk countless years behind prison and have the unwanted intimacy from inmates, I would assume these criminals pulling in at least 150k.

If they decide to sell the televisions off, they better do it one by one.

Thieves Try To Sell 400 Computers On Craigslist
LAKE FOREST, Calif. (CBS) ―

CBS

Contrary to popular belief, you can't sell just anything on Craigslist, as a few thieves discovered in Orange County.

Authorities have found nearly all of 400 computers stolen from an Orange County distributor after the thieves tried to sell them on Craigslist. The interested buyers turned out to be sheriff's deputies.

Orange County Sheriff's Lt. Ted Boyne says Saturday that investigators arrested three suspects after answering their online ads for the 380 computers. More suspects are being sought.

The machines were reported stolen from Getac Inc. in Lake Forest March 21 and 22.

Three hundred and eighty (380) computers. Stolen. And they tried to sell them in one shot.

The article doesn't make it clear whether it was one ad for 380 computers or 380 ads for the 380 computers. Either way, my statement stands - did they really think law enforcement officers wouldn't catch onto these ads?

Maybe they don't want to sell it. It's possible they will try to set it up as one big TV combining all 252 TVs for the ultimate gaming experience.

Or they might set up a LAN party and invite all their homies.

What about giving it away as gifts to all their friends and families?

The possibilities are countless but thinking about it again... yeah, they're probably going to sell it and make a quick buck.

If they were to set it up as one massive, 252-screened television, then they must have a really big place for them - these are 50-inched televisions after all. And if they could afford a place to install these televisions, then they've got the money - which makes me wonder why steal in the first place?

But wow, powering up 252 televisions would be a pain. Never mind the hydro bills - 252 televisions on at once is one helluva fire hazard. Though in a twisted way, if they do get hurt, then they kind of asked for it - this presuming no innocents are invited to their illegal shindig.

I agree - they may try to be silly enough to sell these for "a quick buck". Though we are talking about 252, 50-inched television screens. This means that these things are going to take a long time to sell, if they use the "white-van" method.

All this aside: how is it that these "thieves" steal a freighter and a trailer, only to have the freighter found and the trailer nowhere in sight? They have to have had their own freighter to switch out the old one and ride away. And I imagine those things are not easy to switch out. That said, the staff reporter for Crime Stoppers is mighty polite in calling them just thieves because that level of work just screams organized crime rather than your run-of-the-mill group of thieves.

Probably closer to 100k. Often stolen electronic goods are priced at half of MSRP.

If they're smart, they wouldn't sell them in Ontario anyways..

If you know how or have experience, it really isn't all that difficult. A friend of mine's boss got arrested for doing it... That nut was stealing trailers full of merchandise, driving them up to his farm, and burying them! Yes, he had a bulldozer and pits pre-dug... this guy was burying fullsize tractor trailers.

The fact that they ditched the cab (which probably has GPS) just shows that they knew what could track them down and how things work in the business.

Then by this logic, I suppose, the thieves are either insiders, have an insider, or have been stalking this place and getting to know "how things work in the business."

Still, the location in question, if Google is correct (http://maps.google.ca/maps?sourceid=Mozilla-search&q=Mighty+Transportation+Services%2C+north+service+ rd%2C+burlington), is a transportation hub of sorts. Different types of good from different locales across Canada (and the 'States it appears). And of all the possible freightliners they could've struck and of all cargo loads they could have stolen, they picked one of the more black-market lucrative ones - televisions. At least I believe they (televisions) are lucrative.

And I still imagine it isn't easy getting/renting a freightliner to haul the trailers after ditching the original GPS-installed freightliner. Find a freightliner, stalk a place/have an insider(s), identify pay dirt cargo load, break in, steal, switchy-roo, haul ass and haul load - this may not be a case of organized crime per se, but this definitely has the hallmarks of more than simple thieves.

As an aside, the last time I heard about a whole truck load being stolen, it was an entire load of meat - chicken, I think.

Unless these guys are exporting these things to Asia they are likely to get caught. One slip up, with one TV, leading to one arrest could unravel the whole thing.
