TFC player here, was very active in the good old TFC days playing in leagues and such. Just getting back into gaming right now (after a few years hiatus) until school starts in September. Just bought the Orange Box yesterday, haven't played TFC in 3 years-ish or TF2 ever. Anyone got a chill place for me to start?
If you by the slimmest chance happened to play at MayberryTFC or played in STA, definitely let me know lol.

Team Fortress 2 is a bad, bad game. It is nothing like TFC, and in fact TF2 caters to casuals more than anything.

Although most people have moved on to other games/real life, there's still a handful of (ex-)TFC players that hang around, some even do 4v4s and stuff. Great if you want to see if anybody remembers you from past clans and see what theyre up to.

TF2 is an amazing game. I also enjoy changing my nae to something with obama in it and playing in Texas servers.

Just played it last night... definitely more casual and not as fast paced as TFC but I thought it was pretty fun. Not too big on this unlocking weapons thing though, and I still haven't caught up to the new skills and weapons. One thing about it is that it was more team-based. I got a hang of the soldier again pretty quick but couldn't go across 2fort and wreck **** by myself like I used to. The lack of nades disturb me, especially conc. Also don't like how they ruined demoman with sticky bombs.
Pretty fun nevertheless. Oh and the finding server system definitely sucks. Portal is a blast.

Haa the catacombs! That place used to be real busy. Thinking about it I don't remember what nickname I used back then. Hm...

I used to be a hardcore TFC player but had to quit when I started university. Played for teams like SiGiL, BlkSun, uE, DO, etc...

Hmmmm take a look to the bottom left of your find server box, if the Show Map List box is checked uncheck it, it will make it look like the normal find server box. I remember when they put this in and it seems really stupid to me.

you're a bad game.
TF2 shouldn't be exactly like TFC, what's the point of making a new game?

come play on sourceop servers, they're pretty much top TF2 servers on the net. donate $10 and get yourself a reserved slot.
sticky bombs is what makes or breaks the demoman. ****** demomans don't know how to use stickies, good demoman pretty much uses stickys 90% of the time. Albit, they've reduced sticky damage, now it takes 4 stickies to kill overhealed heavy. used to take 3.

i usually play on No more Heroes or Drunken Brawl.
Payload for the win!
Hate the setup for game though. So annoying to find a good new server...

I like TFC's pipe bombs better. Maybe I'll get used to the sticky bombs soon.
Northern Resistance is usually empty... I'll try source ops next week. Post your nicks maybe we can play together.

I just started as well, anybody know where I can find some newbie servers?
Is getting achievements the only way to unlock all the items?

I don't know about newbie servers but I usually play on whatever server with the lowest ping, which usually means the Northern Resistance servers as well. I'd recommend you join games with like 24 player cap instead of 32, it can get a bit chaotic. I play mostly Dustbowl & Goldrush. When I started I played a lot of 2Fort and Granary as well.
Also yes, as of right now achievements are the only way to get the new weapons. Although they changed it so you don't have to get them all to get the weapons. You can join an achievement server/map to get them really quickly. I was in a server that let you type something to select the achievement you want to get, I got my Heavy weapons that way because I don't play Heavy very often.

I find TF2's lack of good custom maps disturbing. Most of the good servers only play valve maps.
There should be more low grav servers playing Turkeyburgers, or murderball, etc.

I recommend you start with servers with low pings (like The Northern Resistance servers) to help you practice. Afterwards, you can find a server that has a good map rotation.
Getting achievements is the only way to unlock items I think. Most people do it normally through play, but you can also find achievement servers and just do them there. Just try to find one with has a low player limit as it can get quite chaotic with high pop achievement servers.

I think i started with servers with low pings like Northern Resistance as well,
but now i'm usually on the Stompfest servers (www.stompfest.com)
I think it's based in chicago [ EDIT:Indianapolis ], so it's nice for toronto players.
It has a nice group of ppl playing. Although it goes dead overnight.
Just call for Medic and you'll find me :D ...unless you're a damn spy!

Orange Maps! There are a ton of them out there.

orange maps are boring as far as custom maps are concerned. its just a simple 2fort X 2 = 4fort.

I also play on sourceop under the same name. I haven't been playing TF2 for 2 months and I just started getting back into it after the spy/sniper update. I've started playing on random pubs first to get rid of the rust before transitioning back into my SOP rotation.
Was once ranked first on sop and second globally on hlxstats but it meant nothing, so I didn't bother staying up there. Now I mainly play for fun. With that said, all the players there are very skilled compared to the random pub and pretty much all my Steam friends list are people from there. :)
This is when I actually played too much many months ago Link (http://www.hlstatsx.com/global_stats?engine=0&weapon=&game=tf2&country=&season=8®ion=&kills=0&city=#settings)
You can tell I like to m1+w a lot :D

Old topic but for west coasters, my favourite servers are the ones by TheVille and circle-x gaming. Good group of players play on those.

What name do you use on theville?
I actually played on that server like 5-6 years ago for TFC. Since I started TF2 last month I've spent most of my time there.
Anyway I go by 'alphs'. See you around.

The Sourceop servers are my favourite. I play under the same name, and mainly on insta 2fort. I started playing on their other servers too , and the skill difference is very noticablely high. So I suggest maybe playing on pubs and simple maps like 2fort first.

Lol I've played on SourceOP. I wouldn't say the skill level is very noticeably higher. Still nothing compared to the better TFC servers back in the day.

But compared to any other pubs, it is, especially the valve maps rotation server.
There's so many facepalm moments when you play on other servers.

Okay I'll go play in a few hours on SourceOP and check it out again. Nothing really stood out when I played there for a few times last month.

Although lately I'm just joining whatever games my friends are in. TheMaChine - Teamwork Advanced or something is one I've found myself on a lot these days.
