I've been going to my same stylist for a couple of years now. Just recently I've been going to her place to get my cut since she charges half the price of what I pay at the shop.
I understand that the employer probably gets a good chunk of the price of the cut, thus why we give tips. But since it's done privately in someone's basement, they get to keep everything.
Question is, am I suppose to pay tips if this is done in someones basement?
TIA

Do whatever makes you feel comfortable. There is no right or wrong here...but I was in a similar situation a few yrs back and I tipped.

It is your decision. I pay $15 + $3 tips for the haircut every 6 weeks for 10 years now. She did not raise the price and I did not pay less.
She did my hair since I was in University and that was over 20 years ago.
She was working for a shop. Then, opened her shop. Then, she got married, closed her shop and is doing that in her basement. I met her again 10+ years ago in a doctor office when she was taking her son to see my family doctor.

I go to a Japanese stylist who does cut through his apartment.
I tip, but pretty low. $5 on $30 cut. Which to me, seems kinda low.
Is this fine?

The fact that you are going to their basement for their convenience it's already a tip, the tip is based on how long he's been cutting for you imo.

I tip based on service, even same stylist you been for many years can make bad cuts here and there, if I like the way it result sure I tip more, otherwise I don't feel embarrass not tipping at all.
