View Full Version : How to look good in formal wear?

When I mean good, I don't mean the traditional ways to wear a suit, dress shirt, pants etc. I'm thinking something a little more fashion-forward... This is just a suit to go to attend a wedding, nothing to crazy, but I don't want to look like every other guy.
So to summarize, how can I look better than the rest lol, nothing too pricey, but something that looks great.
thanks rfd

the suit could be more fitted so it can show off ur exterior features ala james bond style
maybe change the shoes u're going to match it with?

If you look at the latest apparel magazines (e.g., I get Harry Rosen's sent to my house for free), they have plenty of excellent ideas. I by no means can afford the items in that catalogue, but they offer good ideas on HOW to dress 'fashion forward' as you suggest, which you can replicate with items in kind from other retailers.
Can't go wrong if you 'look' like those within the pages. But don't go crazy, just choose your own personal style and go with it.

Another one, try going to www.harryrosen.ca and look at their tips page. You may find what you're looking for.

Not to burst your bubble but you're not supposed to really show up the couple getting married are you? I thought that was bad protocol.

colourful socks.
match your tie with them, and maybe your date's dress if you can
wait...you dont have a suit, try a three piece one, fitted as well
plus the sock thing....

maybe you should ask the bride and groom. If they want a more traditional wedding I'm sure they won't appreciate it too much if you show up wearing whatever wack-thing you think fashion forward is

don't wear something flashy at a wedding... leave that for other formals but not a wedding or funeral.
IMO
the black and white theme is still the best looking. white dress shirt, black tie, black suit/pants/shoes. Just make sure you get the same shade of black that isn't glossy.

True.. I know a girl that went to a wedding and she wore a silver dress.. It looked great, but it looked white instead of silver

Hmm I guess that's true as well, but i'm not going for a REALLY flashy look anyway, just something that can stand out a bit but not really so much that people only notice you.
Right now i'm thinking of getting slim fitting shirts, pants and then a sleeveless thin vest with a suit on top.

A bold, jewel-toned shirt, a more modern-cut suit with just one button, and a flashy tie are ways to make you stick out a little more than the "average" suit-wearer.

a modern cut black suit that fits perfectly is all you need. and a handkerchief

You shouldn't be upstaging the bride and groom. If it's a more casual setting go for the Hank Moody/ Lew Ashby look of Well fitted Jeans, and graphic tea with blazer. You'll look better than normal, will stand out, but will not out dress the bride and groom.
If it is a more formal setting, use color with a traditional getup to your advantage. So instead of black and white, use grey and dark grey. Or where a shirt with French cuffs. Subtle differences are a lot safer then going crazy.

Depends on the type of wedding. Im Indian and our weddings are generally over the top and upstaging the bride and groom is usually impossible.
A one button suit, while super trendy right now, will probably be out of style in a season or two.
Also, remember to wear things that you're comfortable in. If you're not used to being the centre of attention, you will most probably fidget and feel awkward.
What about interesting suit materials? If its a summer wedding and slightly casual...what about Linen or Seersucker. If Winter, then try adding a cardigan or button down sweater vest.
Fun socks are always a great acessory tho (no Christmas socks...but fun patterns like the Paul Smith ones at Holt Renfrew)
Ties and cufflinks are always a great way to stand out ( they shouldnt come in a matching set tho...thats just tacky)
Hope that helps

just make sure your suit is measured to your figure. imo, i always thought formal events were more about the women (with the dresses) to shine than men, which is why we all wear the black suit.

Or wear a bowler hat and carry an umbrella like John Steed

Im digging this look, with out the umbrella though, haha
but I bet it would look even better when tailored.
Now I have my graduation suit, hahaha.

I've always stressed this....a proper fitted suit makes a huge difference. I favourited this article from GQ a while back. Check out the vid/slideshow:

A bright coloured dress shirt and slick/bold tie can really make a statement. You can also kick it up with some stylish shoes.
Weddings are pretty formal - you'll get more funny looks then anything if you dress like your going to a club.
