Alright, well I'm looking into buying a PS3.
Should I stick to Big Stores like FutureShop and Bestbuy or is it safe to buy it on Kijiji or Craigslist for less...
Tempted by the "sealed" "BNIB" PS3 for $350.
Is there anything I should know? How would they possibly scam me if it's sealed? Should I open it infront of them to verify the content? What are the measures from getting yourself scammed?

If you care about warranty, you need a receipt. Sony does not warrant without a receipt.
On that note, I bought my PS3 this way, BNIB, without a receipt... for $300. It should be OK, don't do it if the dude is sketchy, and opening it in front of them might be a good idea.

Buying off Kijiji/Craigslist is ok as long as you follow basic precautions.
Be sure to get the seller's telephone and address. Pick it up at the given address, avoid meeting at a "convenient" location.
Bring a friend with you, so you have a witness in case something goes wrong.

But is it worth it? I mean going through all the hassle and not getting any warranty. Do PS3 have a high failing rate?
Should I just go and buy it for $399?

if you are really skeptical then buy from retail..
BST > Kijiji/Craigslist anyday of the week
i bought mine from the BST without receipt and i've had zero problems...
and the ps3 failing rate is VERY low

You def. want a receipt for an item like this, sure your saving $50, but is it really worth it if the PS3 fails?

If you ask me, $50 is NOT good enough. I would look for a MUCH better deal on a used one. People buy new for a reason (peace of mind, warranty, etc). With that so-called "BNIB", what will you get?

One other option, but harder to find is look for openbox ps3. I once saw it at a few futureshop stores for 50 less the original price.
This way you get a used ps3 w/ reciept :D

Me peronally I NEVER buy electronics on Kijiji/Craigslist..b/c if anything goes wrong that little recipt will be your saving grace...
With thoese online classified sites if your hardware fails...dont even bother calling them back for your money cause its already spent

Agreed. I'd rather go to a retail store and buy a factory sealed box with a proper warantee. Saving that $50 on craigslist isn't worth it when you have to second guess yourself every time you look at the ps3.

If you're only saving 50, then no. At most I'd purchase from someone with numerous positive feedbacks here.
Like above mentioned, not worth taking the chance if the system fails because you don't have the receipt.

I bought a ps3 for a friend from kijiji. worked fine. The only ps3's I would worry about are the 60gigs as they are having issues.

Like everyone is saying a $50 savings is not worth it. And if you do go for it like one of the above posts said I'd open the box with the guy there. It would be pretty bad to get you new appearing box home only to find a few well packaged bricks in it.

Not really, you could buy one return it and buy it back again once it has been marked open box lol. My cheap ass friend did this for his LCD tv a few months ago at Futureshop and saved like $50.
But I think unless the savings is significant off craigslist or kijiji (40-50% off) I would say pay the extra money for piece of mind from the store. Chances are if has no receipt it was probably stolen or a CC scam so the seller's cost is nothing anyways.

It's more like saving $100.
$399 + tax = $450 (assuming you don't get some sort of bundle).
I saved $150 this way, what good would my warranty do, it's going to expire soon anyway, not a problem. Though, I did buy it BNIB from RFD and not Kijiji. No receipt.

Whenever I sold something new and sealed at Craigslist, I always made sure to give my store receipt. That should be common courtesy. Otherwise, I'd stay clear.
