View Full Version : Food Beer, Wine, Liquor Deals In Ontario Only.

I figured it might be a good idea to have a continued thread for beer, wine and liquor deals. I know when I need beer I go to a walk-in beer store so I can check out what is on special. I also like to try different wines and liquor and will often buy what is on special at the time. I thought it might be good to know what's on special ahead of time, and maybe have a review of some products.

So, I'll start off with:

Beer
1) $26 inc. deposit for 20-pack of Rickard's White/Red. IMO good price for great beers. Guy at the beer store said the special should be on until the summer.
2) I'm pretty sure 2-4's of Sleeman are still on special for $33.95 inc. deposit.

Wine
XOXO wines are $1 off. Pretty basic and still no-too-bad wine for $8.95 at LCBO.

Liquor
Panama Jack's is $3 off at the LCBO. I bought a bottle because it was way cheaper than Baileys and I actually prefer the taste.

That's all I've got for now. Remember to drink...responsibly ;)

I really like the idea of this thread - may want to change title to Ontario only though, as this could quickly stray from the uniform prices found in Ontario. Other provinces have such vast pricing if sold at an independant retailer, so it would be very YMMV, wheras LCBO and Beer Store prices are the same accross the board.

I'll contribute if I find anything for sure.

I've been doing some wine shopping on the Bin Ends sections of Vintages Online. I found some great deals by sorting by price then ascending.

I get it shipped to my local LCBO (free shipping) and it arrives well packaged in a box. Everytime I've got prompt delivery (1-2 weeks) and multiple phone calls to remind me to pick up my order.

A nice thing is that if you go pick up your order during a busy time, you don't have to line up, as they process your order at customer service counter. Just goto the desk and tell them that you received a phone call to pick up your booze :)

https://www.vintagesshoponline.com/vintages/BinEnd.aspx

P.S. I've only been able to get the site to complete the checkout process using IE. Chrome didn't work for me.

For those close to the Quebec border, come on over and get these for $25-29 per case or visit Costco and get the 55 pack of Coors Light for around $55 (They've had it at that price for a while but I haven't been there for a few weeks).

Yes, excellent thread. I'd like to see the 'deeply' discounted products at the LCBO listed, if someone sees something good.

For example, Woodys 'Lychee&Raspberry' and Pomtini Green Tea coolers were both $4 off a 4 pack, making 'em around $6 a couple of weeks ago. I think I bought up most of what they had.
(Uhh.. those weren't for me. Well, yes they were. The doctor said I had.. umm... scurvy and needed more fruit in my diet... yeah, that's the ticket..)

zoro69
Apr 1st, 2009, 02:35 PM
There were an unusual amount of discontinued markdowns at the LCBO Saturday.

the coolers were probably the best deal, 10.95 for 5.95. There were a couple woody's and a seagrams kind here. I bought the lychee & raspberry mentioned above. Granted, 10.95 for 4 regular is kinda high.

A lot of the stuff wasn't exactly mainstream, eg hemp infused vodka $35 for $25, which just makes it the same price as reg vodka...bit if you want green tinted you can get this. Saint Patricks day beer sets with mugs or hats were marked down a lot but still not cheap beer

Cant remember the other stuff, it was a lot more $ off then the usual sales...but this is stuff that didn't sell and is discontinued.

Beer is bad, wine is good. Beer is estrogenic and coupled with the fact that most people are zinc deficient which means increased aromatase activitiy, you start to see big guts and man boobs. Look at men in UK versus France, very different in body composition.

well.... I guess I'll reveal my secret.

I did the math a while ago, and the amount of money you can save by buying tallcans/king cans is pretty huge. You need to buy the right ones though, the big 750's and the 1L's usually don't save you as much.

For example:
Heineken Tall Can: $2.50/500mL
24 bottles Heineken: $45.95/7.92L

16 Tallcans = 8L @ $40

So you save 6 bucks and get slightly more beer. This isn't a huge deal or huge amount (I guess they've caught on to me :() but the tallcans for Heineken (and other premium beers) used to only be like $2.35 a peice, sometime they were $2.25. If you did the math you could get Heineken/Stella in tall cans for the price of blue/canadian/etc in bottles.

Since everybody on this site likes to save money, any of us who like to drink are alcoholics? I actually tend to buy the more expensive beers that only sell by the bottle, but if a good one is on sale I might be more likely to grab it, and if it is a favorite like Aventinus, I might stock up. So this thread is quite useful if it is maintained.

Check your local LCBOs to see if they have any Eisbock left. Beware this stuff is 12% alcohol and 500ml per bottle so one bottle packs the punch of more than 3 bottles of domestic brew. But even at $3.99 a bottle it's a steal of a deal.

Ya, I went two weekends ago and they had a display in the main area. I went back this past weekend to grab another one before the special was over and the guy said it would be on for a while longer, but he didn't know for sure how long (probably until the summer). You may have to ask if they don't have the display set up.

Check out in your area for a walk-in type beer store. That way you can walk around and look for those little red stickers! Then of course post your findings in this thread. :cheesygri

I used to have the same mentality throughout my first year of university, but realized that on the cheaper beers (Lakeport and such) you actually spend more.

For example:
Lakeport Tall Can: $1.80/473mL
24 bottles Lakeport: $28.00/8.18L

16 Tallcans = $28.80, but only 7.57L.

As you can see, I'm quite bored.

Are u asking about Amsterdam? The brewery special is hit and miss in that they don't always have the same beers on special. I believe it may be a situation of what is produced that day? If any one know, please let me know. No samplers from what i have seen.

They generally have 2 or 3 different beer's at the special price, they carry other beer's that they produce at regular prices included bottles, keg's and growlers.

With regard to what i like i am preferential to the Dutch Amber. I don't care for their lager to much, it doesn't have much taste. My regular's are Creemore, Becks, Sleeman Cream Ale and anything Mill Street.

Np! Yea, some good deals are there. I got a 1993 bottle of french wine for under $20.

There is nothing stated that makes that a good deal. The implication here seems to be that "age = good" and that is far from an accurate, fail safe, guiding principle wrt wines. The fact is, most wines actually do not age well, at least not in the range which you are talking about. Only certain ones do. Furthermore, out of those that age well, only some do well with further aging in bottles and even then, the bottles have to be properly stored (which has an impressive associated set of conditions).

taste the can, i'd rather a new can than a bottle that has been used 8 times already

You are aware of how beer is made right? A bottle that's been used a few times and washed isn't much of a concern when you consider the stages it goes through, and the tanks it sits in that are used and washed thousands of times. Go see what's leftover after brewing, or better yet, go smell it.

That being said, lighter beers, lagers IPA's etc.. really take on an aluminum flavour that's quite upleasant.

NOTE: I super dig beer, not bashing it, but it ain't the most appetizing process..

Rickards at that price is amazing - Red is a fantastic drink to sip, and white on a patio with orange is a perfect summer afternoon. I'm estatic at that price, I can drink GOOD beer, not get hung over (Cheaper beer with lower quality ingredients gets me more hung over), and not look like a cheapo at the same time!

I'm usually a tall cans guy... Canadian is 2.05 for tall cans, usually pick them up, or do a sampler and try different 6-8 tall cans of beer to see which I like best.

Another beer that hasn't been mentioned here is the AWESOMENESS that is PC Genuine Lager! Presidents Choice baby!

Also everytime you go across a border you should be bringing beer! I bought 30 packs of blue in cans for $25 each in buffalo... three of those had be good for a month, with giving to friends!

+ 1 for Trois Pistoles.

Actually, you can't go wrong with any of the Unibroue offerings. Maudite, Blanche de Chambly, and Raftman are all quite yummy. They rate quite highly worldwide at the Beeradvocate. My favourite is La Fin Du Monde, 'the end of the world!". It has a picture of Quebec on fire on the label - awesome stuff at 9% alcohol!

To contribute to the deals I'll offer my current faves - Maclay's at $28.00 a case, James Ready Ale, also $28.00 a case. IMHO the best 2 of the discount beers.

Grasshopper is GREAT beer, made from wheat, but gets a bit pricy buying it from bars (for some reason its usually a super premium/premium)

I've never even seen Grasshopper available at bars! Of course I doubt Waterloo bars would be carrying anything other than premium Brick Brewery offerings; speaking of which, if you're a fan of dark beers, Waterloo Dark is fantastic. Great with steak dinners!

James Ready 5.5 is a stellar beer. 28 bucks for 24 cans (And if getting hammered is you thing, the extra 0.5% helps).

At university, we started playing flipcup with Canadian, when half a 24 was gone, someone came with a 24 of James Ready, and that stuff was gone before the rest of the Canadian was.

Guys... think about it for a minute. All beer in Canada, Ontario, even Quebec is a massive rippoff! Think about it. The costs to make a bottle of beer is probably around 20 or 25 cents - and we're talking about getting a good deal when you pay 6x that amount!
If you really love beer (everyone should), and hate taxes, you should be making your own beer at home. Homebrewing has come a long way in the past decade. You can make any style of beer in the world at home. And you can serve it on draught. Imagine a beer tap in your own home :) It doesn't get better than that.
When you make beer at home, using the same ingredients a good quality brewery uses (Grains, hops and yeast), you can make amazing beer for around 15$ for 20 liters of beer - thats equivalent to 2.5 cases of 24.
Best of all, the beer you make will be amazing, since you can make the beer _you_ like.
Google it - there are plenty of resources on the net for "All grain brewing" or read "How to brew" A good canadian resource is barleyment.wort.ca (sign up for the email list to get help from others and get in on bulk purchases).

Check out c'est what next time you are in Toronto... Its at Church & front in the basement, very classy nice place with Grasshopper on tap! I've come across a couple other places with it on tap, but that one is the best atmosphere by far.

My fiancee bought me a 2L brew your own for my birthday, it wasn't bad at all. 2L for like 7 bucks, so about half the price of canadian, and all you do is drop a little packet in the beer, leave the beer in the cupboard for two weeks, and enjoy!

I've always wanted to do a full on home brewery, but I hear if you slack a LITTLE with the cleanliness then you will get massive problems with mold and such. I know people who brew wine and they love it... Its actually pretty good!

Well you do have to keep stuff clean - but with modern sanitizers, like Starsan, it's easy to sanitize (you don't even have to rinse Starsan). Not like using bleach or iodine, which is what people used to use and was a huge pain.

Beer is bad, wine is good. Beer is estrogenic and coupled with the fact that most people are zinc deficient which means increased aromatase activitiy, you start to see big guts and man boobs. Look at men in UK versus France, very different in body composition.

almost not worth responding, but... that's nonsense.

the idea came from this early study in test tubes that suggested the possiblity:
http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/119327035/abstract?CRETRY=1&SRETRY=0

but it has since been shown this does not happen in the body:
e.g. http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/jf000988g

and if anything, certain beers may slightly decrease aromatase activity (i.e. may decrease the rate of one step in the biochemical conversion of existing pre-estrogen to estrogen in test tube):
http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/jf053162t

bottom line, me say beer good.

Interesting idea regarding home brewing beer. I will probably never get around to trying it out, but worth a read.

I was in the LCBO today and noticed Heineken 6-packs were $1 off, so $12.50.

I also picked up a tall can of Holsten Premium Pilsner for $0.20 off, so it was $1.80. I haven't tried it yet, but seemed like a good deal.

Good for you:) I read beer in the title, and got interested- I've been all-grain home brewing for the past 6 years. (I'm 26) I have beer on tap in my kitchen (My husband and I built a kegerator, holds 4 corny kegs). That's beats going to the liquor store! I am currently living in Northern Alberta, and I have to say, so far, it has been the most difficult place to buy ingredients. I have actually had to have grain and hops shipped to me here. Huge pain! However, Ontario was a GREAT place to live to be a home brewer- can't wait to get back... someday! (NS was handy too, lots of home brew stores around)

Anyways, reading this, the price of beer really shocks me! (I just moved from Quebec, and the price of Unibroue products HERE are UNREAL...!)

This thread about LCBO deals in Ontario is about as pointless as a thread about new car "deals" in Singapore.
Both products are so heavily taxed in their respective locations that the term "deal" can only be used relatively. It's like posting gas price deals @ 85 cents a litre when Venezuelans are paying that much to fill up their whole tank.

Being a consumer of many products from the LCBO, I can tell you that the best "values" in their stores are the higher priced beers as well as spirits in the $30 - $40 range. Buying a 6 pack of Coors Light for $12 is just a waste of money when you can drink a beer with taste for $1-$2 more. Also, saving $2 on a bottle of Vodka when buying Banff Springs or whatever is also a waste of money when you can buy Stolichnaya for a little more. Same goes with the rums, etc...

You can shop smart at the LCBO and Beer Store, but just know that "deals" are pretty hard to come by in a monopolistic environment!

Check your local LCBOs to see if they have any Eisbock left. Beware this stuff is 12% alcohol and 500ml per bottle so one bottle packs the punch of more than 3 bottles of domestic brew. But even at $3.99 a bottle it's a steal of a deal.

You can make that argument for pretty much anything. A house costs a LOT cheaper in Timmins than in Toronto; a bowl of pho is a lot cheaper in Viet Nam. But I'm not about to buy a house in Timmins or fly to HCM city for a bowl of noodles.

Remember to drink...responsibly ;)

for those in toronto, amsterdam brewery offers some deals at their retail outlet.

www.amsterdambeer.com for info.....its on bathurst near lakeshore.

25 packs are $31.95 i believe, it says $29.95 on the website but they have since raised it AFAIK. its a good price, especially considering what their beers cost if purchased at the beer store/LCBO.

occasionally if you are in there they will be offering discounted pricing on other beers, sometimes because they are supposedly 'expiring soon' or what not......ive had them throw in 2 extra beers with the 25 pack, YMMV i suppose.

Don't forget duty free shops while coming back from states, box of 24 bottle beer cost around $20-25 depands what you buy, For ex. Corona cost 25$ usd,

if you pay cash Canadian you will save a lot on coversion rate , Credit card payment charges much more than that.

Grolsh tall boys (500ml) on sale $2.05 down from $2.35. TBS also has 15 pack cans of Bud on sale for $22.95 - I THINK!!! I can't remember the exact price but I know for sure it's not higher than $22.95, it could be as low as $20.95. I will check tomorrow morning first thing and edit this post as necessary. Not sure how many of you guys will want this next deal but I usually see the gals buy it when I'm at TBS. They're called Poppers - very similar to a Hard Mikes knock-off. It comes in many different flavours. They're 7% alcohol, single bottles (341ml) are ususally $2.10 now they are on sale for $1.95. Cheers! :D

My parents get Magnotta wine all the time. It's not the greatest wine, but it's a fantastic value. Is it worth it? Only YOU can decide! There are some great tasting wines under $10, better tasting than the Magnotta, IMHO!

Not really a deal, but a way to save $0.60 when buying a 12-pack bottles of Bud, Blue, Canadian and Coors light I believe - If you are going to buy a 12-pack of bottles (341ml) then just ask the guy/gal working if you can have 2 6-packs instead of a 12-pack. 2 6-packs will be $19.90 whereas a 12-pack of bottles is $20.50. I know it's not a HOT deal, but if you were going to buy a 12-pack anyway, then you can save something better than nothing! Cheers! :D

I was just talking with my local brewery (Better Bitters/NickelBrook), if you give them 2 weeks notice they will brew you their regular draft beer. This is 24L of Draft @ $55, and you get it in a keg and give them 2. You also have the option to bottle it yourself.

I just paid for a 20L keg of the same stuff @ $60 on the Victoria day weekend, and it was rather good.

20L @ $60 = 60 bottles of 334ml = $1.00 per bottle equivalent
24L @ $55 ~= 71 bottles of 334ml ~= $0.78 per bottle equivalent

It was pretty darn good beer for being cheap, and many of the people at the party liked it.

Downside, you have to be in the Burlington area.

http://www.nickelbrook.com/

They also have loaner taps and tubs, and all you pay is deposit only.

$50 deposit on Tap
$20 deposit on a 20L keg
$50 deposit on a 30L or 58L keg

You'd have to buy alot of beer to make it worth it. I mean, it's pretty much a whole day (im guessing a saturday) you will spend driving: is $X amount of savings worth a whole saturday, 10 hours of driving, and gas/wear and tear on your car?

Now if you have a mail truck.... :D

Better Bitters started as a BYO place and then added a seperate store front for the beers they sell through the beer store. You can't sell retail from a BYO place so he had to have a seperate entrance.
I think the reason the OP had a lower price for the 24litres is that if you give them two weeks it would go through the BYO side so it is cheaper.
If you need to just buy a keg from them without notice they have to sell it for more because the alcohol taxes are more for retail versus what is payed on Brew Your Own.

They are here

hope it wasn't mentioned, but ucan2 is a very good brew-your-own operation. I had one at a golf course the other day and it was like mana from heaven (ice cold, hot day). A little over a buck a beer, and all natural ingredients.

I downed one in about 20 seconds after 9 holes, then took 21 strokes off my score for the front 9 (it was a rough first outing of the year)

Hi Tijuana, where did you get the source of this? City of Toronto is possibly going on strike Monday but haven't heard LCBO.

From LCBO employees, they said most likely they will be going on strike, they said only for a few days probably. They also said around 1 out of 10 stores will STAY OPEN. Also they will only know which stores will be open the day of. From what I read, haven't asked the actual date but it looks like its the 24th, which is next Wednesday.

Thanks alot, Ive heard of these brewers but Ive never tried them before.

hey guys just a 'new' beer alert! So PC has a new line of beer called CERVEZA' it's their version of Corona! But seriously, 12 pack bottles (341ml) $15.95 and it comes with a coupon for a box of PC Quesadillas (250 g box of 2, frozen) I think the retail value of the quesadillas is around $2.99? You can choose between Chipotle Chicken, Gaujillo vegetable bean and Smokin' Stampede pulled pork. And redeemable at Loblaws, RCSS, Fortinos, Zehrs, Valu-mart.
TIP: If you're going to buy a case of this, ask that it comes in 2 12-packs so you can get 2 coupons! The price for a case is $29.99. The beer itself isn't that bad, just like most of the PC brands. This one is kinda more similar to a Brava maybe? Cheers and enjoy! :D

We asked our Canadian brewer to help us create an authentic-tasting cerveza! Our PC Cerveza Mexican Inspired Beer is easy-drinking, smooth and light-bodied – pair it with spicy foods to help cool your palate or enjoy as the ultimate thirstquencher on a hot day. For some extra refreshment, serve with a wedge of lime in the neck of the bottle. Sold only at The Beer Store.

In case anyone is thinking of heading to the LCBO today (Tuesday), maybe it's time to get on the wagon, so to speak! Unless you find getting repeatedly elbowed in the boob or sideswiped by people with overflowing carts of booze a sizzling hot deal, then avoid it at all costs!

I was at the Mississauga Square One LCBO today (to redeem the 10 Free AirMiles coupon) and it was really busy, but they still had good stock of most things. Most Smirnoff and Iceberg Vodka was sold out. But it was kind of a good thing because that made me notice that Slava vodka was $3.00 off.

They were still pretty well stocked at around 5:30 this evening, possibly because they're a new LCBO and most people are not in the habit of going there, so it may be an option for those looking for last minute supplies.

Managers will run select stores. Lets say there are 5 stores in an X mile radius, all the management will run one store for maybe 5 hours a day, with some of that time dedicated to licensees (restaurant/bar owners). They may alternate the stores, again, based on stock levels and based on the situation in any particular area. So don't fret, If you want to get drunk, you can still get drunk. But you may have to travel further to get your firewater, at less convenient times, and you choice may be limited to something you don't like, but at least you won't need to resort to brewing your own prison sink hooch.

I wouldn't call you picky. No fruit in the beer.... ever.

Its even a Man Law - No, fruit is completely off limits in beer. If one were to put fruit in a beer, they might as well put a little umbrella in it and call it a "beera colada". Man Law: "Don't Fruit the Beer."

If you are interested in making your own wine, the independent "make your own" store Kamil Juices (http://www.kamiljuices.com/) in Guelph, Ontario is offering 20% off all juices for July and August.

I have been going there for years and the product is downright fantastic, extremely high quality. No fillers, no concentrates. Their own staff supervise the harvest from origin-controlled wine growing areas in Europe.

If you're a newb at this sort of thing, the initial cost (including the 20% discount) will be about $120 for 28 bottles worth of wine, including the on-premise winemaking fee and taxes. All you have to do is dump a small package of yeast into some juice and then they will phone you in 6 weeks when it's ready to bottle.

The bottles themselves are about 12.99 per dozen and are reuseable. Corks are like 30 cents each or something.

Overall, it comes out to around $4.50-$5.00 per 750 mL of your own wine, not including the glass bottles themselves.

I should also mention that red wines should be left to age for about 6 months before consuming.

there is a bright green (almost neon green!) sticker on the box that says free Quesadillas. It should be on all 12-pack bottles of PC Cerveza and PC Blanche beer. If you buy a 24-pack bottles, it comes in 2 12-packs so you get 2 coupons. And the price for a 24-pack of Cerveza is $29.95. The problem with such long delay of posting bonus points is that very few have the time to keep on checking the account updates. Sometimes bonus points become a hassle.

I believe that Air Miles at the LCBO are a questionable venture to begin with because the cost of the Air Miles plus administering the program is built into the cost of the goods sold.

So ultimately the Air Miles, on average, increase the cost for most people because of the administration costs of the program.

Average Pirce Increase of Goods Sold Due To Air Miles Program > Average Value of Airmiles Earned

The people paying cash are just subsidizing the rest of us, and this is also true with the cost of credit card merchant fees, rewards, etc.

I would not have a problem with this if the LCBO was not a monopoly, as I would just shop elsewhere.

Nothing beats buying Beer at Walmart and Costco in the States

Up to 3 times cheaper then here in Canada where the greedy brewing companies all own shares in the Beer Store where they rip off hard working Canadians.

We'll never see real good prices on beer until this Monopoly ends here in ON!!!

Yeah but at least we're not in Ireland, where they drink a hell of a lot and pay an arm and a leg. The cheapest decent beer was a 6 back of Bavaria for 8 euros. I'd say we're lucky.

Yes, the government sets the minimum prices. They do that in Quebec as well ($21ish for light beer and $23ish for others - does not include tax & deposit) but the retailer gets to decided how much over that price they want to charge.

whether that is true or not....it still doesnt change the point being made to you: minimum pricing is set by the provincial government.

that said, your point in this point is accurate....the price raise which effectively eliminated 'buck a beer' was controversial as the ministry of finance was seen to have its hand in it.

Agree with Maximus and CanadianMike that this is a government thing and ranting against this government monopoly has been raised repeatedly on the Wine Spectator board. The LCBO has to authority as provided by the Liquor Control Act of Ontario to - and I quote Section 3(1)(i) - "to fix the prices at which the various classes, varieties and brands of liquor are to be sold..." That's ALL alcohol including beer and it's not only fixing floor prices, rather, it's pricing period.

However, if you believe that the Brewers are hiring government lobbyists and making tactical political donations to try and influence the politicians... well... that's a different story.

no this is just either 20-pack cans (355ml) or 20-pack bottles (341ml) of one. i.e. All 20 will be either Coors or Canadian but not both!

You can always get the getogether pack from Molson which comes either 24-pack of cans (355ml) or bottles (341ml) half Canadian and half Coors. I think the getogethers are on sale not 100% sure tho! :o:D

I was too, for the same reason. But Then I got a few bad batches, and now it's stuck in my brain that their beer is frequently bad. I had a mouthful of brown mold at one point which was gross. Also, I've noticed a few times since that their beers have odd head. It's often really thick and foamy.

Loving the Rickard's red and White, been buying them all year. I like both, wife likes the white ones.

I'll keep buying at $30, just hoping they keep this case available! In the meantime, I'll stock up at $26.

I bought the "Rickards Red and White 20-pack" and found out I dont like the white ones....
What to do to them? Exchange for something else @ beer store?

I too am not too fond with the white.. my sister drinks them tho. I just drink the reds. :)

Not a big-alcoholic, but what tastes similar to Carlsberg or Heineken but is in the cheaper range?

Maximus, if you don't believe that it's the Breweries pushing and essentially blackmailing our govn't to make these increases then your sadly mistaken. Their bottom lines were hit last year, and hence needed these increases to maintain their insane profits.

For some reason, breweries, especially Molson's, has unbelievable political power. When cheap American beer in cans was eating up a big share of the market, Molson got the gov to raise the minimum price and put a deposit on beer cans. (Notice that there no deposit on pop cans.) When the brew-it-yourself places (you bought the ingredients and brewed it yourself so there no alcohol taxes) became very popular about 6-7 years ago and started eating into Molson sales, they got the government to slap a $10 tax on them, which killed the whole brew-it-yourself business within a year.

This is one of the many reasons that the beer & liquor sales should be privatized. The other is that the LCBO actually loses money every year as a restail operation. Sure they collect liquor taxes, but so would private retailers. But apart from the taxes, they are big money loser. It's really one of life's mysteries that a business having a liquor monopoly could lose money. Oh wait, it's not. When you have a employees doing minimum wage work for triple the money and when you have a store in every podunk town because of the politics involved, it's easy to screw up a liquor monopoly.

Net sales topped $4 billion ($4.27 billion) for the second consecutive year. LCBO also delivered a record $1.4 billion dividend, not including taxes, to the Ontario government.

This is entirely based on availability. In Peterborough, my friend picked up a 750ml of Starbucks Coffee Liqueur for $17.95 (down from $29.95). $12 is a very nice difference in price. Although it is overpriced to start with, Kahlua is also up there in price, so $17.95 is a refreshing discount.

watch out then guys cuz when I went into my local TBS on Monday, they told me all (or at least most) of Labatt's products went up in price! :D

Try Bavaria. It's a Dutch beer, sold at LCBO in 500ml can 6-packs. Usually priced at 11.50. They currently have the light version on sale, 60 cents off for the 6-pack.

The regular is somewhat similar to heinekin (at least to my taste buds, with a little less aftertaste)

I think this is the only european beer they currently have that is regularly priced at less than $2 for a tall boy can.

Not bad when you consider that it is a dollar or so cheaper than a Carlsberg/heinekin 6 -pack of 333ml bottles.

50% more beer for less money. :D

I think its gaining popularity, because I noticed that my local LCBO has now started to stack cases of it in the beer section, whereas before it was only stocked on the shelf as 6-packs

that's a pretty tall order. you can get low carbs/calories but it's gonna be kinda hard to get it @ 5% alcohol.

- Canadian came out with their new '67', only 67 calories but 3%!!!
- Moosehead has their Cracked Canoe, don't know the cal/carb content but it's like 3 or 3.5%
- PC Low carb beer - 2.5 carbs, 4%
- And if you can find it Labatt has Sterling, it used to say low carb beer on it but doesn't anymore (I think it still is though), don't know the alcohol content either, sorry!

I agree with you that the $14.95 for 12 is a great deal for upper canada lager . But i assume that you are referring to upper canada Dark ale when you say Red. Which I think is a really nice dark ale. It seems that Sleemans has repositioned the Upper Canada brand as a discount beer because it always used to cost more than that a few year ago. I am not complaining

However, right now Waterloo dark is on sale for 18.95 for a 12 pack. A liitle more expensive but I think a little smoother.
