As the topic states.

Picked this up a couple weeks ago, works great. Shipping is expensive, but if you're in the GTA you can just pick one up in store for $60

http://www.treadmillfactory.ca/?goto=viewprod&id_prod=609

Also, when I was originally searching for this I found this place in GVR for $50

http://www.fitnesstown.ca/Extreme-Door-Gym-

Just started P90x yesterday!

I'd be worried about ripping my door frame down.

Mar 31st, 2009, 11:04 AM
The door frame will be okay. It distributes the weight into the wall as well as down. I've used it and haven't had any issues.

P90X is crazy hard but works wonders if you stick to it. I'm on week 8 at the moment and it's been great.

the one walmart sells is the regular version, I recommend you get the Power Trainer Pro or Power Gym Pro. The slanted bars makes a difference when doing pull up's. It's easier to do and it targets the right muscle. As you build the muscles, and supporting muscles and neural pathways for that motion, you can try the various bar positions that is avil on the bar. I try to knock out 50-70 pulls up spread across the whole day. Lot of people avoid pull ups because it's hard, but like everything else you have to start slow and practice constantly. Once your back muscles are well developed, you'll notice you make better gains in your chest. That's because back muscles are complimentary to chest, muscles. Your body tries hard to keep symmetry. If you talk any PT's, they'll suggest you do push up's, bench then after that do rows in a superset. Also pull up's are mass builders, they add thick slabs to your frame.

Shawn is a big advocate of pull up's. Do them kids.

In order to hold your weight you need to unscrew it pretty tight. This pushes the frame apart and the rubber washers leave black marks along the frame.

What about with kipping pullups via crossfit. Can you kip on one of these things or just do a deadhang pullup?

I'm pretty sure the one at CT doesn't have the extra attachment (broad reach bar). I couldn't find the one with the extra attachment anywhere for cheap.

Maybe there are better deals out there?

I don't think this would work for a kipping pull-up. I've never actually done a kipping pull-up but from what I've seen you swing a bit before pulling up. This thing very much relies on the downward weight to keep it in place.

How much is the one selling at Walmart? and where do you find the Power pros?

I'm looking for one that does not need any drilling to attach to door frame.

My friend got this unit a few months ago from the treadmillfactory's newest location out by the far end of mississauga. It works pretty good for him but he's a pretty small guy (~140lbs). I personally never felt comfortable using these doorway style chin up bars because I am a bigger guy. I like the freestanding ones at my gym or monkey bars at the kids playground better :cheesygri

Not to my knowledge. However the foam on the part that supports the weight is black and can mark up the paint after a few uses. If you put a small cloth over it, problem solved.

For $29.99 you can't go wrong.

It says on the site that the bar measures 20 3/4" long, which seems to be not wide enough to settle on the door frame. I'm guessing that number is incorrect, but can anyone tell me the correct measurements. Just wanted to see how it would fit on my doorframe.

A few caveats for those looking at these removable iron gym type pull up bars is the wide of your door and the thickness of your wall/door trim. I bought one and am really limited to where I can use it.

The bar has a maximum wide of 32" and the room I wanted to use this in has a 36" frame. Also, some of my interior walls were built with 6" studs which prevents the bar from reaching around to the other side of the wall. Works good if you've got 3.5" walls only.

Another annoying thing is it really dents up the door trim so make sure you add extra padding on the trim or on the bar.

Hey guys,

I recently purchased the Power Gym pull up bar from CT. Problem was that my walls are too thin (seems to be the case for most town houses/condo/apartments). The bar would not sit properly on the wall/door. My walls are about 3 to 3.5 inches thick. Does anyone know of any other pull up bar that will work with my thin wall? I'm trying to find something like the one posted where you can easily hang the pull up bar on the door trim.

i bought one and it's a waste of time because i live in a condo and my walls are not thick enough to have a thicker door which means the bar doesn't stay up on its own.

make sure you measure your door and don't believe the box when it says "fits in any door way" cuz the store i bought it from also has a no returns policy.

so now i'm stuck with a power gym bar with no use. if anyone wants it for $60, let me know.

Well I wouldn't say other models won't work but he tried one similar to the Iron gym but returned it. Personally I like the pefect pull up's mounting compared to using the wall and door frame unless it was like this :)

i had the same exact problem. Unfortunately all of these pull up bars are around the same size and will not fit on the doorframes in condos or apartments... the sucky thing is that my doorframes are also too thin for the perfect pull-up or any of the other ones that you can drill into the walls so i'm stuck using resistance bands on hooks... damn modern living!

You're paying for convenience and comfort (grip). Pads vs Bark/metal. If you have to walk 10-15 minutes there and back everyday, thats adding extra time to begin the activity.

I already have that one...though I got the Power Gym one tonight for P90x, in case there's anything this one can't really do. Like someone else mentioned, it's sorta leaving black marks on the door frame. I don't use the screw and that other thing to hold it in place, just sorta screw it tight...it's held properly for the time I've used it. If I don't end up needing the Power Gym, I might return it. I'm sorta worried though, my door trims are as thin as the one's seen in M.D.'s pictures.

Btw, is there a difference between the Power Gym and the Power Gym Pro, or are they the same thing? I've been reading how the one at Walmart is basic or something.

Just a heads up for people that are planning to buy a chin up bar or have bought anything from fitness source. If you ordered anything online you will probably want to call your credit card company and request a charge back because I don't think you are going to get your products. The company is going under and closed all 9 stores already, website is down.

Love live Bed Bath and Beyond, Canadian Tire, Wal-mart and Treadmillfactory.ca :)

I picked one up tonight at the Bed Bath and Beyond in Oakville. They had a whole skid near the front of the store.

Put it together and it's a very sturdy piece of equipment.

They recommend the frame be 28" to 32".

The door frames in my condo are 34" - which it mentions in the manual that you buy an extension bar but it still rests on the door frame and works great.

Now to only be able to do more then 2-3 reps.

New baby on the way, can't go to the gym and muay thai class, going to have to work out more at home. This one at BBaB, will it wreck your door frame? Can I do wide-grip pull ups on it?

I bought the one from The Treadmill Factory. It was a lot heavier than the ones at Walmart and Canadian Tire. In fact, the bar is one pc and therefore does not have any weak spots. The ones at CT and Wall Mart need to be bolted at the middle of the bar causing a stress point. Just my 2 cents.

What about with kipping pullups via crossfit. Can you kip on one of these things or just do a deadhang pullup?

I don't think I would kip on these.

While good kipping pullups don't involve a ton of lateral forces, it's still easy to do and I think this would yank right out.

take a wide grip, and push your torso forward inline with your arms. that'll do some back for you!

Just to add: The ones people are posting for $30 are NOT the ones I was talking about in the OP. The one in the OP has extra grips on it so you can do wider versions of all the exercises, to work your back more. It's the exact one sold on beachbody.com to go with P90x.

I live in a condo, and although the doors were too thin, I fixed this problem by getting two longer screws, and putting a spacer between the upward facing bars and the one that sits on the frame to shorten the distance. I also used the mounting brackets that are included (at least the one from treadmillfactory came with them, I can't speak to other places). Started P90x on Monday. As of today I can barely move!

Yep some pics of setups would be nice.

I've had a pullup bar for years, it seems for those who want a doorway setup (many people are limited to this) you kind of have two options:

1. Mounted single bar (like CT's LifeGear bar (http://www.canadiantire.ca/browse/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=84552444209 5385&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=1408474396672232&bmUID=1238691136903))
Pros:
-Very strong (as they screw into the 2x4s of a doorjamb)
-You can do kipping and dynamic movements as the bar is stable
-Because of stability, I find they offer more versatility, i.e. I hand gymnast rings off of mine, use towels/bands off it

Cons:
-you have to put holes in the doorjamb
-limited grips

2. Friction/Leverage bars (like the Power Trainer Pro (http://www.amazon.com/Power-Trainer-Pro-Pull-Bar/dp/B001AT3O8A))

Pros:
-easy on and off (no need to drill holes)
-allow for many different grips

Cons:
-require a door trim
-they depend on the weight of the person to stay in place. So if you want to do kipping/dynamic movements, it could fall off
-less stable (I wouldn't hang rings off of these)

Now my question is, are there other setups out there? I'd be interested to know.

That's why the spacers are for. They push the bar which sits against the trim 'closer' to the trim. It's still a little off (I wouldn't want to use it just on the trim, as I also have thin trim), but when it's in the mounting brackets it works just fine.

The total distance which needs to be covered is the space between the bar, and the piece that sits against the trim at the top. The spacers move the top piece closer to the bar.

I think it's those white spacers he put between the beams and the door frame pad (lower photo).

I have no idea what they are made out of. They came included with an LCD mount I purchased a while back (same as the longer screws). I have been using it a few weeks now, with no problems, but I don't weigh much. I made sure they were screwed in nice and tight, so some of the burden is transferred to the spacers, and I think it can only come down if the screw snaps in half.

And I am bringing it, which is why I'm so sore! I'm drinking so much water now too that my weight is going crazy (+/- 3 pounds a day). I actually want to gain weight overall so I'm not too worried about that though.

Well if anyone is working out in their basement with the floor joists exposed here is what I did for mine. Went to home depot and bought a 1/2 black iron pipe and the foam insulation to wrap around it. Then took tape and warped the insulation tight to the bar. Next measured two pieces of 2x4 and screwed the into the side of the floor joists and used a whole drill to put the bar in. Works amazing and cost like 10 bucks

i'd trust the guys at home depot but bringing the bar there with me just seems kind of stupid. but short of doing that i don't know how i can explain to anyone what i'm trying to do...

Just go to Home Depot and get a metal spacer? You can cut them to length as well. If you're hardware savvy, you can match pipe diameter, cut to length, and file a groove to make it fit exactly... or even weld it :)

it just feels like extending the length of that will increase the rotational force/torque (wahtever the proper physics temr is ) of the entire bar...

Received my Iron Gym from BednBath this evening and put it together. It's alright, does the job, hangs well from my doorframe without marking.

The only disappointment is that you can't really do a wide-grip pullup since most of the outer handles are pinning against the side door frames. From the looks of it the treadmill factory or even the Power Trainer Pro from a few posts up can do wide-grip, which btw looks a pretty good deal $30 from Walmart.

But for the price, I'm not complaining about the Iron Gym, it is pretty light, sturdy enough and is easy to put up and take down.

Alright mine arrived today. Shipping was pretty quick actually.

It's shipped in one box, maybe that's what he means. :D But you do have to put it together (7 pieces plus bolts)...takes about 5 minutes.

I would recommend the pro because it has so many more variations...and for the P90X program, they do a lot of different variations that you won't be able to do on the cheaper ones.

Anyways, H&H has free shipping and they included a little gift bag thing. I'd recommend them!

The thing is solid as hell once it's put together though. There is no worries about it being unsturdy.

I used mine today. I weigh 210 and the thing is solid.

Sounds good - I'll order mine now!

thanks for the review...

i've seen in at walmart
they didn't put it in the same spot with the rest of the fitness stuff
so i thought they didn't have it / sold out / didn't carry it

so i went into the mall and bought it from the "showcase" store for $70

on my way out i walked through walmart and saw them on the shelves elsewhere in the store for less than what i just paid

showcase is no returns/exchanges :(

I've noticed the three walmarts around me have slightly different fitness / sporting goods stock so if you can't find it in one go to another if possible.

I'm getting depressed I can't find a way to mount a bar in my place.

I've been thinking about this though,
http://www.easychin.com/

My basement is open ceiling but only 6 feet up to the bottom of the beams...but it might work. Otherwise I'm going to have to build a contraption and that probably isn't possible either. Maybe I'll mp3 the video so I can get the audio and go to a park or something.

I picked up the Premium Chin-Up Bar from Treadmill Factory (link (http://www.treadmillfactory.ca/?goto=viewprod&id_prod=609)) - saw it at the store and it was of good quality.

Manual said it fits doors 24"-32", so I figured I was okay, since I lived in a house. Assembled it - high quality again - everything was wrapped in protective foam, then individually bagged. Put it up on the door and - what the heck - the tubes attached to the hand grips are resting against the door frame! I measured the door frame - 24". I measured the chin-up bar - it's 32" between the pads that are supposed to rest against the door frame! i.e., the door frame should be at least 32".

Ugh, guess I'll have to call them Monday. Another few days of wimpiness.

thanks for all the info here.(powerbar)

picked one up today.

easy to assemble.

everyone has a question about the door and if its solid...my door frame is about the same thickness or less as the powerbar.

its not a clamp or adjust on thing.

its just designed to fit on the door so its secure. and its solid. worth the buy..

Have you tried it on the doorframe. I am almost sure that it will work on a smaller door frame. I have one in the basement and I am sure the door frame is less than 30 inches (cannot check now because we have a sleepy niece down there). The black bar fit above the door and can extend beyond the door frame.

I have used it a number of time and seems like very good quality. Now just need to get my reps up.

i know we spoke about this before. Just letting you guys know that i bought the iron gym and i modified it so that it can be used on my thin walls (about 3 inches thick). Seems very stable so far! I would take pictures but i don't have a digital camera =(. Let me know if anyone is interested, and i'll try harder to get a picture up.

Basically all i did was extend out the part which sits flat against the upper wall. I bought new screws and something to fit around the screws for support. A couple of wide washers were used too for added support. Very stable and secure.

yea they are very similar, the 70 dollar one has a 300lb weight limit and comes with hooks for above your door frame to either raise the bar above the trim if you have low doorways or just add support on the trim.

The shown on tv one comes with the hooks as well, it's a metal bracket with screws.

However it says it can support up to 250lb and not 300lb.

Turns out the one I saw at Walmart is the Power Gym and not Power Trainer. pimpbob has not replied to say which location he bought the Power Trainer for $29.99. Is it common for different Wal-marts to have different prices? Perhaps if pimpbob posts his receipt, we can get other locations to match that price?

If you have a basement, go buy a short length of galvanized pipe for a couple bucks. Then go buy a roll of galvanized steel strapping for a few bucks. Then go buy a handful of screws and bolts for a few dollars more.

Very easy to hang your own bar for under $20 (including lots of leftover bolts, strapping, etc.) that will take 400+ lbs.

Galvanized pipes are NOT endorsed by Chuck Norris or Lindsay Lohan... :-0

nah, i used a thick copper pipe when I was at my parents'... worked well... just have to pick the right diameter of pipe. The pipe we ended up with was still a bit bigger than what it should have been. Not sure how strong copper or galvanized steel pipes are at the same diameters as the commercial non-Chuck Norris bars.

Use a small amount of dish washing soap. DON'T use cooking oil!

I've been using it for a couple of weeks now and everything is fine. It seems to be stabler with the socks. I figure since the clips don't protrude from the wall, the weight is distributed equally on all eight screws. Just make sure the rolled up socks or whatever you choose to use is equivalent in size. Keep in mind however that I don't weigh a lot.

Working out just fine. Through first month of p90x no problem (and was using it before hand just for regular exercise).

For p90x you have to do so many that I have to use a chair (way out in front of me) for a little support and it still works fine with that. The grips took a little bit of the paint off the door frame on the sides, so I might suggest wrapping a sock around it to stop the paint chipping.

I too went to Walmart to hunt for the Power Trainer Pro, but found the shelves empty. I saw a $30ish tag for the regular Power Trainer, but no tag for the pro. This was at the Warden Walmart in Scarborough last week.

Managed to find the Power Trainer PRO at the ShowCase store, it was on sale for $59.99. The Iron Gym is sold there too, but it costs $40+. So I decided to go with the $29 Iron Gym at the Bed Bath & Beyond instead. I figured paying double for a bar won't gain twice the muscle mass.

At home, I mounted the bar on my apartment door. The width of my door measures 28 inches and the door trim width is about 3.2inch. The Iron Gym fits, though that bar is resting on the trim on an edge, instead of on a flat surface because of the thin door trim. The edge of the bar is far from the edge of the trim, so it's ok. It's stable enough to do chin-ups, but not a good idea to swing. The bar is also good for doing push ups without getting hands dirty on the floor.

In conclusion, it's a nice bar. Could have been better if it serves drinks too.

The bar with the loops and extra handles for the wide grip is worth the money. If you really want to work out you have to spend money sometimes. The wide grip bars are what make it worth it since most peoples arms would have to be wider than the door frame to do wide grip pull ups.

Seconding this question... The Iron Gym Extreme looks to be the a solid choice, except that it's hard to find a supplier that won't charge an arm and a leg for shipping (typically from the US). Also not in Toronto either, so it'd be great to find a Canadian supplier that has decent shipping rates.

I've pretty much decided on the Ultimate (black) bar (Ultimately Fit/P90x version) because it sounds like it's the sturdier option, but I wanted to ask if anyone had any experience using this one without installing the brackets.

I see that a couple of the other (Power Trainer Pro) also apparently come with the brackets, but I wondered if the natural weight distribution/friction of the design is enough without having to install the brackets. I'm in an old building with a suitable doorway trim (30" wide, 1" wide trim) but I would be worried about the walls holding up to any weight on the screws.

Anyone?

Thanks!

I did finally pick that up too.

Unfortunately my apartment's walls are too thick for it. I still tried it out, but the back-bracing bar cannot go up high enough to get on top of the trim.

Fortunately, with a lot of squeaking and nerves, I can get it to lock in place by friction alone (after I put my full weight on it). It's definitely rubbing the paint off the back and front jams, as well as the rubber matting on the back bar, but it's still usable.

The premium model is definitely the best of the various bars out there. It's of very high quality and sturdy as hell. Highly recommended.

When I was a youngin', I lost a lot of weight after Grade 9 (that summer) and started doing chin ups using the frame of my closet. The inside wasn't finished with gyproc, so I just used the wood frame! No cost.

This one is for sale in the "I Saw That on TV" store in the Malvern Town Centre (Scarborough, ON ... or East Toronto) for $45. I was in there today and saw 7 of them. They had it there for a while too, so I think they get regular stock in all the time.

If the frame is thick enough then no. For example my frame is only 3.5 inches and you need at least 5 inches for it to sit properly. So I did the really ghetto thing and stuck two 2 inch blocks of wood underneath the bar on both sides where it touches the frame. Works fine :cheesygri

I don't use the brackets that come with this bar for the opposite side of the frame, works fine without it. If you go to the mississauga store they have them right in front of the counter.

That's the OP's best option

I ordered this from the BBB Canadian site. Just tracked my shipment and it showed that it was sent via UPS from US. I guess I'll have to pay brokerage now??? did anyone from this forum who ordered online have to pay brokerage?
