HOT! Crack it open and you have a half decent WD3200BEVT to exchange out your old laptop drive, plus if you do it clean, you have an enclosure to house the old one.
Better deal IMO than the Hitachi 320GB Travelstar at NCIX that's been MIR'd to $60 as it's tax before the MIR+shipping=$100 upfront to Ontario. The Hitachi might be a bit faster but it's a vibrator.

Just an FYI for anyone wanting to be able to remove the hd and use as a replacement hd for ps3 or notebook. You want the B7B run number (indicated on the box). B8B has a usb connector soldered directly onto the hd, whereas b7b uses an adapter.

The three possible denials will be:
1. Calling Sig-OOS
2. Sig is not on WD's list of dealers
3. Limited time/quantity offer at Sig
However, looks like this YMMV is tipping on the side of success, good luck everyone and try another store if no success esp one that's posted success here.
Thanks Sparrow_69 for the huge time-saving tip, will check for B7B, looking to replace an internal.

On a side note, has anyone formatted part of the drive with ntfs, rest with fat32? X360 won't read NTFS, but fat32 won't recognize files >4gb. From poking around the net, it seems that the above is possible. Figured I'd try to get the best of both worlds.

It has to be R/N B7B with the adapter, not B8B which is soldered (thanks again Sparrow_69). Put tape on it so you don't scratch it while you split it like an oyster. Once you open it, it's like any other SATA 2.5" internal drive you find in a laptop or PS3. Inside these WD MyPassports should be their WD Scorpio Blue 320 GB, SATA 3 Gb/s, 8 MB Cache, 5400 RPM. If for a laptop, you make an image CD of your recovery with TrueImage and swap it out. Sorry I don't know what's on a PS3 drive that needs mimicking.
The case should be salvageable for your old laptop/PS3 drive.
Imagine, an upgraded laptop or 320GB PS3 :D

If I used TrueImage to create an image file after I've done away with bloatware on my notebook pc, does this mean that I have to use the factory recovery cd first to install the OS, and then restore the TrueImage file? Or is there a way to restore the image without having to go through the intermediary step of reinstalling the OS on the new hard drive, i.e. a TrueImage bootable cd media on bootup to restore the image directly on the new hard drive?

This method allows you to install your old drive back in case you mess anything up:
1. Go to Acronis and download the trial version of TrueImage. Install and create the recovery CD.
2. Connect this WD (before you take it apart) by USB to the computer
3. Boot the computer using the Acronis CD and then select the Clone option
4. Clone the old HDD onto this new one
5. Take the old HDD out of the computer and replace it with the new WD you removed from the enclosure
6. Boot the computer. Everything should be as it was except for more free space.
Replacing RAM sticks with higher memory RAM is even easier and highly recommended. My Dell Inspiron says max 2GB but they LIE, lol, I'm using 3.317GB (installed 2+2GB) and now it's wicked fast.
Either upgrade, I believe there are youtube videos if you need visuals, maybe even for your particular laptop/netbook, just search it.
I'm installing this WD in my wife's netbook.

They do care. This way, they can price their stand alones HD's and Passports with disparity any not fear them cannibalizing their sales respectively.
This also ensures that if/when the hard drive dies. You can't simply open it up, and stick a cheap HD replacement into it. You'll have to buy another external drive outright.
Dirty practice, agreed.

so if i just want this as an external HD for my PC, what should i look for?
do you have to open the cardboard packaging to see which style it is?
If you just want just an external drive for your computer, it dosn't really matter which version you get.
However, those looking to crack it open and use the drive for a laptop upgrade or for your PS3, you need the R/N:B7B version.
It should indicate it right on the label (with the serial/model number stuff), found on the bottom of the packaging. I bought the B8B verison, it had cardboard packaging. I wonder if the B7B version's packaging is different? Going back today to exchange it!

Your drive looks like it has the sata-to-usb bridge permanently attached to the drive. Did you try to remove the bridge? If it doesn't come off, looks like it can only be used externally unless you can somehow connect the drive to a usb header of a desktop mobo in which case it can be used as a "desktop" drive.

I haven't opened mine up yet but it should look like this WD Scorpio Blue (actually that's what it says on the label in your pic)...
http://www.refbuy.com/images/WD3200BEVT-R-unit.jpg
The adapter at the bottom in your pic should easily remove where you attach your old drive and put it back in the enclosure (I can only go by Sparrow_69 right now that B7Bs do detach and are not soldered).
Re: PS3, this might help you:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_U4-s7pNG8
BTW, WD probably solders the new ones because its cheaper to manufacture. I don't think they care what you do to them because for the most part external drives are distributed to retailers at a higher cost than internals. In other words, externals are supposed to cost us more than internals, we just lucked out with this deal.

Tried pricing matching it at the local BB, no go, told me that unless there is a physical local store, they wont match it. I was pissed because of the attitude I got so I emailed BB and got the following response:
"In order to receive a price match, there must be a local store that has the item in stock and available for immediate possession. If that criteria is not met, a price match cannot be done.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused."

The Silverstar/Steeles one had an empty box on display so I brought that up to the front and they got one for me so I'm not sure. Markham/14th should have more because I took the only one off the shelf and they said they had more in the stock room and one at the front I believe.
Markham/14th Staples = No go. Was quite close until the manager saw the Part No. or something was off by 1 digit... (instead of 0 should have been a 1) told me you were damn lucky and Kennedy shouldn't have PM'd it.
But Kennedy one PM'd with no problems... but the manager said "interesting" something tells me he'll stop the next dude attempting a PM.

I was also denied here in London, Wellington at Baseline. Manager said for numerous reasons. Theirs are open box (even though they say to add security tag, which these are already shipped with.), No returns allowed, not an authorized dealer, page even says "wholesale". He called head office who confirmed that they do not PM SIG. He was really nice about it, so I didn't give him much flack. He did say that stores can PM but the store itself would be on the hook for the difference, which as a consumer, I don't really care. But Head office may send something out, so, go today, and get it if you can!
Success at Staples.
For those that are getting PM at Staples, congrats... I wish I could get one. I ever tried BB here, and they said no, they would match the price, not beat it but would also charge $10 shipping, since that is what SIG would charge.

hey guys, just want to report that I've managed to PM at BestBuy Yonge and Dundas. I went on Saturday and got refused. I noticed that the girl who refused the PM worked at the cashier's desk today so I couldn't PM there like I planned, so I tried the CS desk again. I couldn't find the black one, so I took a blue one and the man there told me it's the wrong colour and took out a black one from the back for me. However, he told me it's limited to 1 per customer and that someone tried to buy 20 this morning.
Before this, I went to the Staples at University and Dundas. The cashier lady hesitated to PM, called manager, who called SIG and verified there was no stock but I was pretty close though b/c the cashier couldn't get a hold of the manager for a while and almost gave in.
Anyways, perseverance paid off, so good luck to anyone still trying to PM.

Like I said, I went to the same Customer Service area at the same BB store on two separate days and the CS representatives dealt with the PM in different ways. I just brought the same web printout that I had on saturday, except this time, I had absolutely no problem. Various people will tell you different things such as go when there's a long lineup or when the manager is on break, or find a young and inexperience cashier, but at the end of the day, YMMV. When I went today, there was no lineup at the CS desk so make what you want of that. Good luck though!

quick question for people experienced with portable hard drives since I've never owned one. I really don't want to lose data on this thing so what is the best way to handle a portable hard drive? Is it ok to use it on its side or does it always have to lie flat? Should I get a sleeve or pouch to protect it? and finally, do WD drives have a good reputation in terms of low failure rates? Thanks so much for any answers.

My experience lie it flat always and use a hard protecting case when carrying. You never knows the drive may fail anytime no matter what brand you use. Backup important data in another differnet storage periodically (e.g another externla/internal hard drive in home or somewhere once in a week or so). If you lose the portable one for some reason you would still have in backup. Thats my practice, others might have different approach. Good luck.

thanks for the answer. I guess I will try and find a hard protecting case.
Does anyone know if I can partition external drives and if I can boot up a copy of the Windows 7 beta from this drive? Also, I just hooked it up to my USB and there's already some files on the drive including a setup file that has a Sync software on it. Are these files necessary and can I simply delete them while I'm formatting?
Also, the drive vibrates quite a bit... I'm assuming it's the drive + a fan inside? is this normal? Thanks.

To those with a PS3 (or laptop), I can confirm that the B7B version has a removable SATA-to-USB converter. It's quite jammed onto the SATA connector so you'll have to pull it off forcefully.
The WD HDD comes with a jumper on the two leftmost pins of the 4 pins on the right. I just swapped the jumper onto the 40 GB Seagate drive that came with my PS3, assembled the SATA-to-USB converter, and put the casing back on. Then I took the 320 GB WD HDD (without the jumper) and installed it into the PS3, formatted it, and restored my PS3 via backup utility.
The PS3 & 2.5" HDD work like a charm.

Agreed....SIG had limited quantities which they probably ran out of early in the sale. Tried myself but was rejected ... Best Buy cashier called SIG and was told they were out - I know he would have given it to me if it was in stock...as he did before - fair enough, you get lucky sometimes with the PM, sometime not - I can live with that, as it's not really a hill to die on.

From bb's website:
Either prior to purchase or within 30 days of purchase (14 days for computers, monitors, printers, notebook computers, camcorders, digital cameras, radar detectors, portable DVD players, and air conditioners) should you find a lower advertised price, including those on the internet from an authorized Canadian Dealer, we will match that price and beat it by giving you an additional 10% of the difference.

I'm sure there's a how to guide on copying Windows OS onto the new HDD and then copying your laptop's content onto it. I'm not familiar enough with windows to know if/how to create a disc image and then copy it to the new HDD. I assume this can be done though...

i'll take the same printout to bb tomorrow and try there.

Yeah, the staples I was at, they were good about it when they denied me the other day in London, didnt' even ask about restocking fee, as it said something right on there, about No returns, or something?
Too bad SIG didn't honour their April 3rd sale price... Staples price on this drive went back up to $169.99 today too, that sale ended yesterday for them. An extra $4 off, nice nice price.

I must have been lucky since:
1) the Staples price went up to $169.99;
2) it was in stock and still $69.99 around 10:15 am on the Sig website; and
3) I got the drive for $68.17 after taxes and disposal fee.
I also have the 400gb drive 2.5" Elements drive from Newegg.ca as well. This drive will be going into a MacBook.
I prefer the case on the Elements drive because it isn't a fingerprint magnet.

Hoarders or not, if the price says it will be so until a certain date, then make it so, and show OOS or something, but obviously, it's not out of stock, as they are offering the product again, exact same number, but for $149.99. If they were only offering so many at the sale price until April 3rd, then it should state, first XX number of units at $69.99, then the price will be $149.99. I mean, it's confusing, as a consumer, you should be able to bring in the print out of their "ad" and get it at that price, if it is before April 3rd!

I don't even see the Passport Essential on their website. Sold out maybe? I only see the 320gb Passport Studio. The WD 400gb and 500gb are also listed at $149.99. Could this be why they removed the 320gb drive?

The PS3 & 2.5" HDD work like a charm.
wow i cannt believe you had to answer that question, for those that didnt already know, dont go messing up your ps3 or laptop and blame someone else..

Talk about a lame excuse. Where do the employees come up with such insulting and crazy replies when asked to pm? I'd also like to know why Staples HQ allows this to continue. Whenever I get answers like that, I phone the head office immediately and complain. One time, I called once from the store and the person at HQ immediately called the manager of the store and ordered him to give me a pm on a monitor.

I have done similar in the past. IMO, its a good idea to have a copy of the store's pm policy with you. That way, when they come out with some b.s. PM policy, you can call them on it. Recently, I was at a FS trying to PM a cell phone from Telus. The price at FS was 399, telus had it for 99$ Both were no-contract prices. The manager was downright rude and kept telling me it must be with a contract, even though it plainly showed on my printout (as well as website) that the phone sold for 99$ He then sticked to the excuse that they don't PM cellphones. I had a copy of the PM policy, and asked him where it said no cellphones. He had no reply. Still wouldn't PM though.
Manager handed me a card with cs number on it and said:"here you, can keep it". I called cs and explained the issue. CSR asked me to hand the phone over to the manager. 5mins later I got my PM.

Good job for sticking to your guns. I recently went to BB @ Sherway to price match Tiger Direct's price on the WDTV. Tiger had it for $119 and BB for $154 on "sale" down from $174 (ha!)
I was surprised when I went to the front counter (for a change) and asked the cashier for a price match he didn't hesitate. I even got the 10% difference too :-)
Problem is I do most my shopping in the evenings.. Are Customer Service phone lines open at that time?

FS cs is actually open all night. My call to cs was around 8pm.If I need to call though, I try to make it during business hours. Bigger chance of getting a csr that works there full-time, as opposed to the night staff who usually need to wait to get the ok for full-time managers (who only work during the day)
