Shipping sort of kills it along with the customs, taxes and handling by the time it hits your door in Canada. Better off to order from DX in my opinion.

I've order a lot of stuff from DX and never been hit with anything. Thanks anyways.

You can get one for $7 CAD in Richmond, if you are in Vancouver area.

You are not speaking from experience obviously. I order from Monoprice all the time. If you order is below $20 there is no customs, no taxes, no handling. It just comes in the mail.
I just ordered this on the 18th, received it on the 23rd:
3992 High Speed HDMI 1.3a Category 2 Certified Cable 28AWG - 6ft w/Ferrite Cores (Gold Plated Connectors) - BLACK
1 1 0 $3.56 $3.56
284 NEC 5 PORT USB 2.0 PCI CARD ADAPTER (4 external ports plus 1 shared internal port)
1 1 0 $6.98 $6.98
Subtotal : $10.54
Shipping & Handling Cost : $5.08
GRAND TOTAL : $15.62
Yesterday, I ordered this, and expect to receive it late next week:
3940 6ft SATA External Round Cable - eSATA to eSATA (Type I to Type I), Black
1 1 0 $3.84 $3.84
2763 PREMIUM 3FT Optical Toslink Cable w/ Metal Fancy Connector
1 1 0 $3.98 $3.98
3396 PREMIUM 1.5FT Optical Toslink Cable w/ Metal Fancy Connector
1 1 0 $3.36 $3.36
Subtotal : $11.18
Shipping & Handling Cost : $5.10
GRAND TOTAL : $16.28
And, just like the other 20+ I have made with them over the past year and a half, it will just be waiting for me in my mailbox. Simple, inexpensive, high quality.
I know this from experience, so next time choose your words more carefully and stop spreading bad rumours.
And no, I don't work for Monoprice nor am I affiliated with them in any way shape or form.

I have ordered a few things from Monoprice and have never paid any sort of customs/duty/taxes/etc. It has always been $US (price+shipping) converted to $CDN and charged to my credit card.
Monoprice is fantastic!

I ordered 2 of those awhile back, after all the fees and everything it ended up costing about $17, still a good deal imo.

Or if you are buying a lot, just pay for UPS Expedited or UPS Express shipping and all UPS will collect is the 5% tax, no brokerage (UPS covers brokerage fees for all Expedited and Express shipment) UPS Standard is when they will come collect from you.

I wasn't trying to spread rumours and I never knew they shipped USPS. Last time I was going to order some monitor LCD wall mounts from them and I only saw UPS shipping and I know better than to order anything shipped via UPS coming from the states cause their brokerage fees are killer and that is no rumour.

Definitely a good and high quality cable. However, the metal fancy connector is bulky so it could be a very very tight fit if you have other cables right next to the optical.

I bought the same TOSLink cable from Monoprice too to hook my MBP to my home theatre receiver. The receiver end is fine, but I think the MBP uses the 35mm jack to output the digital sound. Anyone know where to pick up a TOSLink to 35mm adapter to plug into one end of the cable to attach to the MBP jack?

I buy at least once a month from monoprice and have never been charged anything over the price and shipping in 5 years of buying.
Always use USPS.

Again, you are just spouting ignorance. Speak from actual experience, not from what you have heard...
Educate yourself before you continue. Don't ship UPS ground, or any other courier via ground.

I saw optical cables in the $5.99 bargain bin at my local RCSS in London but I'm not sure of the length. Will check next time I'm in there. Also sometimes stores have optical cables for PS2 and Xbox on sale under $10. I think its the same story as with HDMI (digital either works OK or it doesn't) so no point buying expensive as long as construction quality is adequate.

Monoprice is fine.
I've made 10 + purchases. No customs yet.
Most orders I made are more than $30 US.
I've just made one that is $45 dollars.
Letz hope there's no custom charges

I am speaking from actual experience and not from what I have heard. I've been screwed before with UPS brokerage fees in the past so I just stay away. One time I ordered a DVD that was out of production for $40usd and the seller on ebay shipped it via UPS and I ended up paying $15 in brokerage fees plus taxes. Regardless till this date it remains my most expensive DVD in my collection. Speaking of UPS today at my work a software vendor we deal with sent us software on DVD and they declared it with a value of $500 and UPS was trying to collect $85 in brokerage fees. My boss denied the package since we were able to download it via ftp.
I'm not the only one that has been raped by them by their ridiculous handling and brokerage fees. If you see the first few newegg.ca shellshocker deal, this was a topic of concern from a lot of users because products were coming from a warehouse in the US via UPS ground. Luckily newegg's handle charge also included any brokerage fees.
Well I'm glad my ignorance and inexperience has brought the best out in you. Way to contribute, you've been on here for a month and your first two posts are like this. Thanks for the lesson on ground shipping via courier. Keep up the good work!
BTW, if anyone is looking for optical cables I saw some in the clearance bin at RCSS at the Brimley location for $1.98 but it's on 1.5m. My co-worker found some push up bars and exercise ball on clearance for $2.98 each so I always check the electronics section whenever I pass by a RCSS.

Is this glass toslink or just plastic fiber?

Just as an advice, especially for longer distances you'd be way better using 75ohm coaxial cables than cheap multimode plastic/led toshiba link optical cables.
I've seen impressive sound quality differences between the two when using it to transmit PCM signals (for everything streamed it might not matter), even with the so-called shielding sensitivity I personnally tend not to use optical when I can.
It has a tremendous power of attraction and cool-factor but it's far from being better than a good coax, and monoprice has some very good of those at great prices.
Moreover, some of the connectors on monoprice's TOSlink cables are a bit cheap and don't hang very tight.
...Just my 2 cents.

Hi mwong168,
neilvan should have used more polite language, but that information is very useful. You should not be upset just because neilvan said you were wrong since he also provided the correct answer. It is helpful when someone provides correct facts.
I'll be making some purchases from Monoprice and similar foreign sites over the next few months, so knowing this information will save me a lot of trouble. I too was ignorant about this as I do not shop a whole lot.
Thanks,
nden

get the $3 6ft optical cable instead- it is more flexible and less prone to pulling out of your equipment- I have bought 6 in total as well as the optical port splitter so that I can hook all of my gear up to my receiver.
