Interesting deal from BestDirect.ca right now... the Data Robotics Drobo 4 Bay Firewire 800 & USB 2.0 Storage Array is $538.74 (http://www.bestdirect.ca/products/179767/Data_Robotics_Inc_/DR04DD10/) with an additional $50 mail in rebate. If you check on PriceCanada.com (http://www.pricecanada.com/detail.php?product_id=574089&sku=DR04DD10&matched_search=DR04DD10), this looks like the best price at the moment by a good margin.
Since your order will be more than $500, it also qualifies for free shipping. If you're outside of BC, there won't be PST on your order either. Dell had the unit for $550 not too long ago, but without the rebate (I think), and of course, PST charged.

Ugh. Almost the cost of a computer. They should make this like $200.

I bought a Drobo a month ago because I really liked the BeyondRaid idea.
Let's just say I sold it on ebay a week after. The fan is making so much noise when you have 4 drive. It's quite slow (23mb/sec USB, 27Mb/sec Firewire)
I forgot that idea and got myself a 8 port PERC5 raid card. Much faster and I have 4 port free for future extension.
Didn't liked Drobo at all.

The DNS-323 is a much better deal at $140. Drobo requires you to purchase the drobo share in order to use it as a NAS. But it does have 4 bay as opposed to 2 on the DNS-323.

And not the same raid.. you should compare the Drobo with the DLink DNS-343, which is about the same price (but come as NAS without a $250 addon and is way more hackable)

The share is a piece of crap. Slower than USB speeds.
Just buy a cheap shuttle computer capable of 4 sata drives. Its cheaper, and doubles as a pc. No proprietary software/HD formating, and much faster LAN transfer rates.
