Just got another email from XM asking to turn my radio back on, offering 6 months at $4.99/month. I know they had this before, but if anyone is interested this time the promo code is: 6MONTHSOFXM
edit: Any sports fans may be interested to know:

Be aware: XM Radio has recently downgraded the streaming bitrate to 32kpbs (dial-up quality) and it is now absolutely horrible. I won't even listen to it at the office anymore because is sounds so crappy.

Found the display model at Brampton, will be picking up it tonight (asked the stuff to put a hold on it so that other RFDers would not snatch it from under me LOL).
I am wondering if this code would apply to new activations? Thanks.

+1
Just discovered recently and really the sound quality is so bad in 32 kbps that there is no point to listen to XM Radio Online. I think I will not renew my subscribtion just because of this, I used to listen it online more often than on the radio actually.

Did they ever charge extra for the streaming part of the package? When I was a member a while back, they said that they were going to charge extra, the amount depending on how long you were a customer. This was a big reason why I let my subscription lapse, and I haven't really missed it. For $5 I'd sign up again though.

Both are display models and the guys cant find any of the pieces besides the radio.

Just got the 6 month deal. I had to call in today to cancel my 3 month free activation today anyways. She only offered me 3 months at first, but all I had to do was ask for 6 months at that rate, and she gave it to me! The wifey is happy now!

Agreed! I wonder why there is always codes/deals with XM but nothing for Sirius Canada or US? I actually love my Sirius which I don't have anymore because as well as I like it still not worth full price in my opinion.

XM is doing pretty much anything it can to hold on to subs right now.
$5 / mo is fair, they would probably increase subs 5X with better rates.
I agree with earlier posts though, sound quality is only so so and I have a factory installed unit in my Malibu. FM sounds much better.

I had XM on a free trial a few years ago...was supposed to last 3 months and lasted about a year.
Was not about to pay $14.99/month at that time so I just let it drop. Now when I go to the XM site it says the radio hasn't been activated.
Online if I use the code given in this thread, it will give me $30 off for 3 months, but adds a $14.99 activation fee. So in the end I would get 3 months for $10/month.
So I called in, explained my story and the guy won't budge off $14.99.
Maybe I am expecting too much but I would have thought they might want a new paying customer, even though it is heavily discounted.
Thoughts....should I try via phone again?

Absolutely try again. What's the reason that they won't give it to you? Are you not in their system anymore?

My 3 month free trial is ending this week. If I take advantage of this $4.99 monthly offer for 6 months is there an additional activation fee because I have been only on their free 3 month trial? Was everyone else charged an initial activation fee along with their monthly fee? if so how much?
bigeye43
Mar 26th, 2009, 03:29 PM
No additional activation fee, as your radio and account have already been set up. My trial ended, I renewed for the 5 bux a month, and no additional fees. Also, I had a no activation fee trial.

Shneebs.I'm glad the rest of you are getting this to work because I've had no luck at all! I called a 2nd time, this time saying "I got a promo card in the mail".... The girl put me on hold (after getting my personal info) and said "We have no record of sending you a promo card"... Busted!!! I asked if they could offer me the $4.99/month for 6 months anyway. She said "no". I then asked what could they offer me - she again put me on hold and came back with an offer of $82.60 + taxes for a full year. I said "No thanks"... She sounded shocked that I turned this down...
I wonder if the calls go to different call centres, depending on what time of the day you call... I'm running out of patience to try a 3rd time...

I wonder if the calls go to different call centres, depending on what time of the day you call... I'm running out of patience to try a 3rd time...Further to my previous point, someone mentioned that the call centre they spoke to was in a foreign country. The people I spoke to on both calls yesterday were definitely North American (no accent whatsoever). Maybe it's possible that if you call in the middle of the night / early morning, the calls go offshore. I wonder if different call centres are more lenient on what they will offer...

I called yesterday at around 12:00 in the afternoon Vancouver time........$82.60 for 1 year + taxes...........that is less than $7 per month, if that were me I would have just taken it......my $4.99 per month is only for 6 months so in 6 months I will have to go through the hassle to renew again with no guarantee of the $4.99 rate.
Try the line that you received an email from them that is what I used and that worked great. El_gopo sent me the original email, PM if you want me to forward it to you....

I just called them up now and they offered me 9.99/month. After "thinking about it" I "remembered" that I had a promotional coupon in the mail and told them about it. They were pretty happy to give me the rate and signed me up at 4.99/month.
That being said when I called them up a few days ago they wouldn't budge from the 14.99/month rate. Glad I called back.
The person I spoke to did have an accent, can't say that puts the call center in a different country though.

So I called back. I simply said that I heard lots of people were being offered $4.99/month for 6 months, but that I was offered $82.60 the day before. The lady said, yes, she saw that on my file, and that she was the same person I spoke with the day before... So she still wouldn't offer me the $4.99/month, but I said I'd be willing to take the $82.60 for the year. I asked if there were any other charges beyond this, and she said there were none, other than the tax on top of the $82.60. After several minutes on hold, she came back and told me that she was able to get it for $81.92 including tax! That works out to $72.50 for the year before tax, or $6.04 per month + tax. So, I'm quite happy with that deal. Now I have to get used to the channel line up which has changed since the last time I had a subscription... Thanks OP for bringing up the topic.

I called at 9.30 EST.. talked to a friendly guy in Moncton when I got my deal.
The guy on the phone also mentioned that they now have lifetimes subscriptions for 400$ or something around that... risky though as who knows how long they will be around...I'm too busy to re-read through all the posts, but i don't think that the lifetime memberships were mentioned here

I had a 3 month trial expiring in May, so I called up and spent well over an hour trying to get them to give me the 6MONTHSOFXM rate.
Initially I was told the 6MONTHSOFXM rate was only for people who once had a paid subscription to XM. Then the following happened:
Me: "I'm not paying $14.99 a month, what can you do for me."
Rep: "That's the rate for XM radio in Canada sir."
Me: "If you don't have a promotion code I agree with you. Can I get XM Radio for the rate of 6 months for $5 a month as per 6MONTHSOFXM?"
Rep: "No I'm sorry"
Me: "Great, go ahead and cancel my account please. Everything, including the free trial"
Rep: "Why would you want to do that sir, your radio is free until May?"
Me: "Please close my account"
Rep: "... one second sir while I transfer you to someone who can help you with that"
Me (Thinking to myself): Sweet, that sounds like a retentions department to me.
Retentions Rep: "I understand you want to close your account, can I please understand why?"
Me: "Because I'm not going to pay a $14.99/month for the service, especially in light of the current economic climate. I was told that I do not qualify for the 6MONTHSOFXM promotion and I'd really like that rate."
Retentions Rep: "I see. What if we were to do a 12 month subscription for $130.xx"
Me: "That's still too much. Please cancel my account"
Retentions Rep: "I see, what if we were to do $11x.xx for an entire year of XM"
Me: "Why didnt you offer that to me a minute ago? I'm going to pass on that as well thanks"
Retentions Rep: "Oh I see, what if I do $80 (aprox.) a year?"
Me: "Thats still too much, sorry. I'm looking to get XM Radio for 6 months at the rate of $5 per month"
Retentions Rep: "Ok one second sir..... We can do that for you, your rate will start once your free trial ends in May"
Unbelievable. That's clearly not the entire conversation word for word, but man i was so frustrated. The rate kept going lower and lower as I said no.
Way too much work for a subscription. At least I was successful in the end.

I used the $4.99 a month code last week on my main radio. It expired in Feb but was still on the one month free play. XM csr used the code but said I would get the free "end of subscription" extension until May and then start the 6months at $4.99.
Seems strange that they want these to start in May. Just an observation.

I had this conversation a year ago and settled on the $80 amount for the year. When the subscription was up, I tried the same tactics as above. The rep never budged cause I got a discounted rate last year and this time around I wasn't entitled to a break. We went back and forth and I finally settled for $120. (what can I say - I love XM!)
I got the impression that XM Customer Service was told to start taking a hardline against repeated discounting. Then again, who knows how desperate they'll be in another 6-12 months time.

Noticed that the XM Activation site has reference to the NHLONXM code listed again.
Has anyone that used this promo last time (year or two ago? here on RFD) tried to re-activate an existing account/radio with this code?
I stopped my subscription and am thinking of giving this a try just for the heck of it...
Thanks!

Just used the "6MONTHSOFXM" code and got the $4.99 per month for 6 months, no problem. This was for a radio that was de-activated a few months ago. Just told them that I had a promo code and wanted to re-activate my service. I didn't tell them where the code was found, nor did they ask. CSR had an american accent, maybe a US call cernter.
Credit card is charged upfront for 3 months at a time. Will be billed today for $14.97 plus tax and on July 20th for the 2nd 3 months, for service up to Oct. 20.
Regular upfront billing of $44.97 for 3 months (equals $14.99 per month) will be processed if I do not call by Oct. 20 to cancel XM service.
Thanks for the code! $5 per month is about right for this service. I was getting sick of commercial heavy local radio and missing my old XM channels.

I just updated for another 6 months @ 4.99 using the "6MONTHSOFXM" promo code which was emailed to me over a month ago....so I guess it still works without any hassle. She also offered me another model of radio for 39.99 + 9.99pm subscription, but I said no since a second radio acually cost more than the 1st ?

Just bought a chevy with the 3 months trial. I have 3 sirius radios (US subscription), and was going to move this one over as sirius and xm in the states are the same company so you can mix subscriptions for $6.99 month for extra radios, but this is a better deal for now. They added it to my 3 months, and said they will bill me in 3 month periods for $14.97 plus tax with the first payment coming when my 3 months free ends.
I recommend that anybody who wants this deal arrange the same as the code may expire.

I'll just throw it out there, but I had the Delphi Roady XT and it crapped out on me after only about two years. It made a high pitched sound when plugged in (not even when on) and when I tried to push the "on" button, it would try to turn on but wouldn't or couldn't (the screen lit up for a fraction of a second before conking out).
A couple of months before its death, it had started to act up by mysteriously shutting off on its own, and it was tricky to turn on but eventually did after several tries.
When it died, I got a new receiver and when I called XM to transfer the subscription to the new receiver, was offered the a new Roady XT (don't know if he knew that's what I was replacing) for $20. I passed because I don't trust Delphi any more. It wasn't on 24/7 so I don't know why it would have such a short life (only 2 years).

I know this is a bit of an old thread but thought I would mention that 6MONTHSOFXM code still works.
I called and said that my wife (who had a 3 month trial) received this code via email and I wanted to apply it to my account which was up for renewal soon.
Dude said he can offer 1 year at $8.99 a month to which I said no I wanted 6 months at $4.99. He said I can only give you 3 months at that price. Then I asked him if 6monthsofxm is a valid code in his system - he checked and magically he was able to apply it to my account.
Thanks OP

I am currently using 2 radios and they just renewed automatically for 320$ for a year on my cred. card..
anyways, called the guy, told him it sucks, that i might cancel and go back to US subscription and blabla... so anyways he gave me a rebate of 78$.. i said to him it was still not very good so he asked his supervisor and gave an additionnal 25$ back.
its not as good as the 6 months for 5$ but anyways, its like 8$ per months per radio. the only way to get 5$ would be to end contrat and seperate radios, and get new accounts for each... so anyways.

I just renewed my murano's XM sub for 69.99 / yr
was going to get the 6months for $5 each posted here; but figured i would try to get something cheap for the whole year instead.
wasn't that hard either;just keep saying no thanks to all the offers until you get the price you want ... comes out to just under $6 per month
that seems like a fair price for a service i rarely use anyways

XM screwed up my latest bill. They charged me the full price for the next 3 months, eventhough I had the "6 months of XM" at $4.99 in effect on my account.
They refunded me the difference without hesitation...I'm thinking they do this on purpose and only correct the errors if you call them.
This practice will only help in XM losing their more of their customers.

Do you know what promo code they used? I think this is a fair price for a yearly sub and I would pay that to avoid having to look for a new code every 3 - 6 months, plus callbacks on their billing errors!

Quality of the FM on my stock Dephi stereo is better than XM which is too bad but I think some people may be listening on bad equipment making their XM sound worse than it is. XM could do better but for $5, I can live with it.

I had the trial from the US XM Radio, and they called me up just before the trial was up, offering me 6mos at $5.99/mo. I agreed, but get this, they then backed out! The CSR couldn't make it work in his system, (he said) called over a supervisor and then told me that he had made a mistake and it was only for 3mos.
I told him to pass. He was the one who called me and did the offer not the reverse. And besides, I've got AM/FM/CD/DVD and Phatnoise. WTH do I need another format, to be charged for, by inept and/or corrupt CSR's. Will be interesting to see what happens with these morons...

Just discovered recently and really the sound quality is so bad in 32 kbps that there is no point to listen to XM Radio Online. I think I will not renew my subscribtion just because of this, I used to listen it online more often than on the radio actually.
I signed up for the $3/mo premium online streaming at 128kbps; it's great, so much so that I cancelled a secondary radio account and use SlimServer (SqueezeCenter) to stream it to my stereo now -- so a net saving of $4/mo.
But I can see why not everyone would want to pay extra for the beter quality.

Just was called and offered $299.99 for my subscription that expires this month. I laughed and said it was way too much. He said "How about $164.18?" I said it was still way too much, but I'd be willing to consider if they could bring the total below $100. He said he couldn't.
I hung up from him and called XM to cancel. When I told the rep I was canceling because of the cost, she offered me a year at $96.18 ($8/month). I said it was still a little high and she said that was the best they could do.
I ended up going with the $8/month even though I probably could've pushed a little bit harder and maybe got the expired $5/6 months deal, but I'm happy paying around $100/year for the service. I've found that their reps are hit and miss. Some aren't so great at negotiating with, while others bend over backwards and cut straight to the chase. When I originally signed up, the rep waived the activation fee and gave me 6 free months right out of the gate.

Call back - it's CSR specific. Wait until they offer something before you accept...don't state "I'll stay for $4.99". I just gave a big long pause after I told I wanted to cancel and she spent about 45 seconds looking over my account and then she offered $4.99/month. Good luck.

The Rep at XM said they would give me a rate of $96 guess the taxes must be extra in the difference. He said the credit would be for $75 (approximately).
XM renewed my subscription by charging my credit card without asking me, so I called in to complain, and have my account closed unless they would offer me a better price.

Hi, strange question but does XM charge to activate / de-activate / change radios? We're thinking of getting it and most of the time we'd use it in our car which has integrated XM but a few weeks / year we travel in our motorhome so I'd like to de-activate the one in the car and active a add-on' one (e.g. RoadyXT) then (we really mostly want it for the motorhome since that's when we'd really get the benefit of it). Will we have to pay everytime we want to do that switch or will they do it for free?
Also is there any benefit/drawback of getting the US instead of Canadian account. In case anyone else cares, here's a bit more info on the CND vs US - looks like there's a few more stations in the US http://www.xmfan.com/viewtopic.php?t=52705.

My sub. was about to expire in the next few days. I called to cancel, and they offered 2 options to keep me as a customer:
1 - Three months at $4.99 per month and pay upfront
2 - One year at $8.75 per month aka $105 per year. They called it a year sub. with 5 months free.
Took the 3 months again. This seems to be a revolving deal with XM, if you keep looking to cancel every 3 months. I think they are waiting for you to slip up and forget about the $5 plan, so they can hit you with $14.99 per month and hope that you don't notice on your credit card statement.

He offered me the $96/year and I asked if the payments could be split and he said 'no'. So I again told him I couldn't afford a lump payment like that and then offered the $4.99/month for 6 months split into 2 payments, one now and the other in January.
It seems the $4.99/month deal can be had if you insist :cheesygri

I received an email to to renew since my contract ends next month.
I called an said I wanted to find out about renewing. The lady quoted my $164 + tax. I said I would cancel instead and she said they gave me 50% off last year and couldn't do anything this year.
I told her to cancel at the end of my term and she said okay. So I cancelled.
I asked about the $4.99 or $79 deals and she said they were one time retention offers.
Any suggestions.

Be aware: XM Radio has recently downgraded the streaming bitrate to 32kpbs (dial-up quality) and it is now absolutely horrible. I won't even listen to it at the office anymore because is sounds so crappy.
Damn! I just renewed for a year at 8 $ / month.
I agree with you for the quality. It's very disapointing. It's like when digital cable announced DVD quality, based of the # of lines of resolution but not taking account compression. A DVD looks better than an HD movie on my cable provider
XM is so compressed that now FM radio sound better in my car. And I have an high-end Pioneer Premier with a Pioneer receiver plugged directly in the radio (no fm transmission an no generic receiver plugged with 1/8 cable) high quality amp and speakers and it's night and day with a CD. Talk radio is especially bad, I think it's even more compressed.
The bad is that I listen less than 10 channels. Remove crappy channel that nobody listen and use the bandwith for quality.
The problem is that with most stock radio, it sounds ok because the radios are bad quality so you can't really tell the difference between CD, FM radio and XM. And it's the majority of the clients.
Which sells better to the average customer?
1) We have 228 channels of high quality music and talk radio
2) We have 40 channels of high quality 192 kbps sound
Most of the peoples wouldn't even understand point 2 so don't hope an improvement of quality

Just got a phone call from XM Canada about renewal and after talking to a rep she offered be $96 and change for a 1 year sub renewal. I indicated that I have had better promos in the past and that Sirius were offering better deals and I would like to talk to her supervisor. She put me on hold for about 2 mins and came back on and gave me $51.17 + tax (don't know where they got that number) for the 1 year.

I have this in my car, though I never activated it...I'm thinking about it now, since I see it here for $5 month, which isn't bad. Does it have traffic updates? I heard they have this thing in cars called XM Nav traffic...but if my car didnt have that orignally, there's no way I could get it now right?

Strange.. I am on my 3rd extension. 2 x 3 months at $5 and now 6 months at $5. I will not pay much more, I just don't use it much. If it's gone, it's gone. My car has a plug in for my MP3 player anyway.

Why bother with XM Canada? Call XM U.S. All you need is a U.S. address and you can get a sub for $77 for the year. You can also do 5 months for $20. They tack on a small music royalty fee but you don't pay any GST. If your U.S. address is one that has no state or satellite tax, you avoid this as well.

They won't shut down the repeaters. There are millions of U.S. subscribers and a big selling feature is North American coverage. They are not going to risk losing subscribers if U.S. residents cannot get coverage in Canada.

Yanks don't travel that far into Canada to need repeaters. Sat signals work decent (especially for XM) the more south (closer to the border) you are. Up north in Edmonton.. hmmm.. I dunno.
From the XM Wiki:
"The combination of two satellites and a ground-based repeater network is designed to provide gap-free coverage anywhere within the contiguous U.S., the southern tip of Alaska, and in the southern part of Canada."

US XM works north of YEG, so far.
from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XM_Satellite_Radio
"In American and Canadian metropolitan areas, XM and its Canadian Licensee known as Canadian Satellite Radio (CSR), own and operate a network of approximately 900 terrestrial repeater stations, meant to compensate for satellite signal blockage by buildings, tunnels, and bridges. In the United States XM owns and operates approximately 800 repeater sites covering 60 markets; in Canada CSR is installing approximately 80 to 100 repeaters that will be owned and operated by CSR in the 16 largest Canadian cities."
The Canadian repeaters that cover northern areas like Edmonton, are owned by CSR (aka XM Canada). If XM Canada fails, Sirius XM will have no interest in taking over and maintaining these repeaters.

To be more specific. I had a 3 month free offer that was about to expire because of a vehicle I just bought. I called XM Radio Canada 1 877 209 0079 and said that I wanted to get the best promotion they would offer. They quoted be 119.88 for a year. I said I saw it cheaper for 4.99 for six months. They replied that that offer was over at end of November. I said that was too bad because I was still in a free trial offer and that I would have taken the promo if had known about it in November. They put me on hold for 2 minutes while the representative talked to his manager. I got the deal.
Pretty straight forward and I had nothing to lose.
Good Luck. I am passing this on to let you know that the deal is still out there.

For people worried about sound quality, it sounds great in car, better than fm if hooked up properly. The only thing i notice is that the volume of xm is lower than cd/mp3 player when played but the quality is still much better than FM id say, and you dont get any static or interferance like with FM unless you are under a bridge or parking garage, but even then it goes into 'clear' mode so you dont hear any feedback during signal loss.
Ontopic XM is not worth the price they charge though. Only get it if you can get a discount, if it was 100$ a year id pay, but currently it is overpriced.
I just renewed for a year for 90$ through XM Canada just by saying i want a better rate. Im not to sure about this 5$ for 6 months, but if its true get it. But if u dont wanna deal with the hassles of an american adress, just pay a discounted rate through XM Canada.

Audio quality is subjective. The fact is satellite radio does not sound better than FM because the source is not the same qaulity as FM. Like they say, garbage in, garbage out.
GRANDISON
Dec 6th, 2009, 10:55 PM
well if you try it you will hear the differance, maybe its being decoded into a high quality stream or something on the receiver end, who knows, but compared to pretty much all FM channels, satallite radio sounds loads better on my amped system.
Pavel
Dec 6th, 2009, 11:04 PM
i have noticed a difference myself but it really depends on the individual. i do know they do some audio modification to help enhance the sound. In the past, iirc, XM was outputting at around 64 kbps and Sirius was less, now Sirius is a bit better, outputting between 60-80 kbps per channel. http://www.overclock.net/sound-cards-computer-audio/539165-xm-radio-sirius-bitrate.html
However, according to Wikipedia, subscribers listening to XM are listening to a 32 kbp stream. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XM_Satellite_Radio

im actually going to call XM and ask them what bitrate they send their signal at and is the quality dependant on the reciever as well
Pavel
Dec 7th, 2009, 01:03 AM
Good luck with that. Hopefully the rep in India or the Philippines will be able to answer your question and not get confused with the online bit rate. :)
