Just picked up one last night from Milton WalMart Supercentre. Price rolled back to $599 from $678. It's a new model from HP: G60-249CA (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01647073&cc=ca&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_CAEN)
I think the deal is at least warm for people looking for an HDMI laptop with an NVIDIA video card to play 1080p HD movies on an TV in addition to regular computer use.

Good price if the specs are the same as HP's. Try to configure this at Dell for a Studio 15 (you lose an inch) and it's $200 more. If I was in the market, I would buy this as a decent HTPC budget laptop.
One of the drawbacks of HDMIing any laptop to a flatpanel is the fan noise. If you already have a decent laptop, better to get the WDTV for around $120.
I would definitely recommend this Walmart HP to a friend. If you could upgrade to a 9cell and 802.11n WLAN, it would even be hotter.

I purchased this laptop on sale from FS a couple months ago for $619 - with less ram (2gb) and less hdd (160gb)... It's an excellent laptop - I especially like the 16" widescreen and full keyboard (including num keys).

The specs look good for that price.
Only thing I worry is the prematurity of the 8200M chipset.
Even worse if it's onboard. You can't replace / upgrade it if it has a problem.

i just bought a very similar laptop from Staples.ca for $564 (after using Staples coupons).
but i think i will return it. some people are saying the Nvidia cards run too hot, and are prone to high rates of failure.
and, even if it doesn't fail, the preventive measures they take is to keep the laptop fan running continuously to keep things cooler. which, i suppose will reduce the lifespan of the fan, as well as reduce the time you can run the computer on battery).
but i'm just telling you what i heard. i'm no expert of computer components.
p.s. Staples did not mention this computer had Nvidia card on the specs they showed on the webpage. which i find curious. I never realized Nvidia was in the computer until it was delivered. i wouldn't have bought it in the first place if i knew it had an Nvidia component.

You guys - this is NOT an nVidia "card" like the 8400/8600 modules are. This is an integrated graphics system in the north/southbridge. Nothing to fear with this one!
It's the 8400/8600's that had trouble - 8600's especially.

Took a bunch of googling to find a step by step guide, but this one helped a lot:
http://www.laptops-drivers.com/hp-laptop/complete-windows-xp-driver-fivers.com/hp-laptop/complete-windows-xp-driver-for-hp-pavilion-g60-120us.html
That step by step is pretty much all I did, except this one had a different graphic card. But both the graphic card and the chipset drivers were on the nvidia website. All you need is a bootable XP CD with either SP2 or SP3.
And also, if you plan to downgrade, you're gonna have to burn all the drivers onto a cd. When you first install XP, the USB port drivers and wireless aren't installed and the only external data you can use are cd's and dvd's.

How's the cooling on this laptop? I have an HP laptop with the same QL-62 chip (although with ATI gfx) and the fan works really hard and runs loud. I was comparing it to a Dell with an Intel T5400 (I think) and the Intel runs much cooler. The AMD is also a slower processor compared to the Intels.
That said, my HP with the AMD QL-62 can decode 1080p flawlessly at about 80-90% CPU usage.

You are right about the processor specs - Walmart's numbers are wrong. By the way I drove from Toronto to Milton to buy the last one yesterday afternoon.
I'm not sure if it was worth it - Vista is such junk that I can hardly wait to get rid of it, and I don't want to make my mind up about it until then. Nonetheless the only thing I've done is replace Norton Antivirus with Avira, and download Firefox and VLC player. Today eventlog is showing 3 system errors, 3 application errors and 4 security audit failures ON STARTUP. On an essentially virgin Vista install. (One of the errors is Norton antivirus trying to start, even though the very first thing I did was a complete uninstall of Norton.) It's a bit like driving a new car home from the dealership and having to get out at every intersection to pick up the pieces that have fallen off. Goodbye Vista, hello dual boot XP and Windows 7.
Finally, I haven't setup the video but out of the box playing full screen flash is very, very slow and jumpy - unwatchable really. I'm hoping I can tweak it and I'd appreciate any hints. I'd say if you want a HD media player you should spend more money, except that's not a guarantee of good performance either.

I use zoom player to watch my 1080p mkv movies with no problem whatsoever. Everything plays smooth and cpu load is 60 to 80% depending on the movie. I use CoreAVC to decode the video which is far superior to ffdshow.

No glow but the lid is glossy. A slightly more relevant question is "How is the wifi reception" and the answer is "it appears to suck". Tomorrow I'm going to put it sided by side with an old tablet I've used at a cafe. If it still doesn't get a wireless signal and the tablet does it's going back to Walmart pronto. Grrrr.

:arrowu: Internal miniPCI 802.11n is better than attaching a wireless n USB or external card to the Walmart one later. Using the proper filters and wireless n means stutter free 720p/1080p streaming off your desktop/HTPC/server at home and frees up storage on your laptop.

for whoever missed this Walmart deal, there is a similar priced and featured laptop at BestBuy (http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0926INGFS10118245&catid=26955#) except it comes with Vista Home Basic instead of Premium. The laptop is on the last page of Bestbuy current flyer.

I'd say if you want a HD media player you should spend more money, except that's not a guarantee of good performance either.
why are you trashing Vista? I have dual boot win 7 & vista and they run FLAWLESSLY on my HP dv5! I've never once had any problems in vista regarding compatibility, drivers, or hardware! I don't get why so many people are hating and having trouble with Vista? I luv it and looks awesome! and win 7 is fantastic! but I am starting to have trouble with the last build.
damn I missed the boat on this deal, my son needs a new lappy and this would've been perfect for him!

I suppose it's an aesthetic thing more than anything else...as you say "it looks awesome" but in terms of functionality it's like a lobotomized XP. This is my reaction after two weeks of struggling with endless nags to let Vista automatically update (I only give open-source software this kind of freedom), poor wireless networking interfaces, no backwards compatibility (for example with Palm software) and tweaking all the settings as far back to XP as I have time for. I've had a PC continuously since 1981, and I've gone through more OS's than I can recall (Apple, MS, Linux and even an Osbourne if anyone can remember that far back) but this is the first upgrade that's felt like a step backwards in terms of configuration, functionality and control. (Oh wait, I've forgotten Windows ME, my bad.) Plus it's HUGE! -- I know, memory doesn't cost anything anymore, but this stinks of sloppy design. It's ****, but "it looks awesome" is exactly why I hate it.
I haven't tried Windows 7 yet but I've heard good things about it. If it goes well I think Vista will vanish from our lives and we'll never speak of it again. If it goes badly I'm looking forward to a better world with only free, open source operating systems from now on.

I have this computer; Got it during Futureshop's back to school sale for 499 and I love it. I think mine may be a little faster than what is listed here, but it works marvelously, good buy for anyone who needs a laptop.

palm isn't "backward compatibility" and I use programs & games that supposed to run in windows 98 (thats backward compatibility) I've installed in my vista and it runs flawless...and as for memory hog? sure its a hog but thats why we have dual core cpu's and more ram (and cheap) the computers nowadays can handle it easily and if not then you can set it lower. and U gotta try win 7 its sweet! nuff said!

LOL , and ya I have to update maybe once a month, in the beginning it was alot BEFORE SP1 but now I haven't been asked to update for 2 months now!!

I just bought one last night at 599$, still looked like the best around for me. I can't stand the 15.4 wide screens to narrow forme. the 16 inch isn't so bad.

Sears carry the same model pm ftw.
Unfortunately, Sears gives the extra 10% of the difference only on major appliances.

So it's a matter of who has the better return policy should you change your mind.
