View Full Version : Helping someone buy tickets with CC.

I have a friend who needs someone with a high limit CC to help him buy 2 plane tickets online. His dad lives in Israel so he can't pay for the tickets with CC, and his own Visa limit is only $500.

If I help him pay for it, and I receive the cash instantly when I pay for it, is there any risk to me doing so? Once I receive the money, I would think my behind is covered appropriately. I wouldn't mind racking up a few thousand Aeroplan points for free.

Make sure you get the money before you pay!

I think most airlines would let you cancel within 24 hours after making the purchase. So you should have a safe window should something go wrong.

Well, if you can sort it all out with the friend and make sure that cancellations or anything of the sort wouldn't fall back onto YOU financially, then unlike what others might say in this section of the site, I'd say sure, go for it.

You're right, lots of Aeroplan miles to be made.

Wait for other opinions to come in ... this is just one ;)

Make sure it's cash or draft cheque, and not money transfer or wire. Even if the money arrives into your account via wire, it can be recalled sometimes due to fraud, mistakes etc.

+1

Either have cash or some form of verified funds (certified cheque, etc.) in hand before you actually do it and you're good to go.

if you get cash instantly then the risk of him not paying you for the ticket is low.

If he has the cash then just get him to put the cash as a payment to his own
card. With a large credit balance he will be able to do the purchase
himself because the credit balance will increase his available limit.

If he balks at this suggestion then I would not proceed to do the transaction
for him since he obviously does not have the cash and you will be stuck
paying the bill while he sits in Israel with your money.

Is there a reading comprehension problem, or did I phrase myself poorly? The offer was I would get the cash RIGHT at the moment I paid for the ticket. This was no issue. I was asking if there could be any other problem AFTER I receive the cash on the spot.

I just did it and now I have the cash in my hand. No counterfeit bills.

You never said you have the cash in hand...as Angel pointed out you said
"IF". So yes, you phrased the question improperly ;)

If he has the cash for the tickets, he should put it down on his CC so he has a large credit. Then he can buy the tickets.

Why would you take on this risk for a few aeroplan points?

actually thats true, he can do that actually.

There is no risk at all if his friend pays him back right away.

You better double check with the airline, if i rememeber correctly, the person that paid for the ticket must be one of the people flying.

You can buy the tickets for someone else. But when buying, you do have to make sure the first and last name of the people travelling are spelled correctly, or this can lead to a big headache with customs.

So if I wanted, and had enough money, I can go and buy tickets for a baseball team, and not travel myself.

If you have the cash on hand, and the enough limit on your credit card (not how much is credited), then I see it as a risk-free transaction. If you can only do 1 transaction due to your own credit limit, then do 1, pay it off, then purchase the 2nd one after.

In regards to areoplan (if its not the benefit on your credit card), I think it would apply to the people travelling bc it would have to match their account info.

I flew my parents from NF to AB last christmas, and i used my airmiles, there was no problem with myself not being the actual person on the plane

Why not just make the payment first? If you have $500 limit and make an extra payment of $500, you can now purchase up to $1,000

As mentioned already in this thread, it is possible that the credit card company could reject. Even though you have $1000 credit available, they "may" reject transactions based on the credit limit (ie.. Approved if transactions amount <= credit limit even if credit available > credit limit).
