View Full Version : Elect HOT? TSCC: Bell TV 6131 HD receiver $149.99

I didn't see it posted, but The Source is selling the Bell 6131 HD receiver for $149.99 until April 1, 2009. IT also says you will receive a programming credit of $100. They don't seem to have any in stock but I took the ad to futureshop and they did a price match for it.
You can add an external USB hard drive to this receiver and turn it into a single tuner PVR.
They are also selling the PVR 9241 for $399.99 plus a $100 programming credit.

Actually the PVR functions are basically identical. Of course the 9242 has two tuners but that is it. IMO the 61XX series is better value for the money.
OP this is a very hot deal - my local source seems OOS but I am going to try to get a raincheck tomorrow.

you might still find a few 6141 recievers at some Bellworld stores. They were replaced by the 6131 which is an inferior reciever IMO. No over the air tuner, and no hdmi cable in the box like the 6141 use to have.

The 6131 is really only inferior if you can receive OTA signals in your area....Having no OTA tuner is a negative for people that can receive OTA signals but for people where no OTA signals are available it's not a big deal really since both receivers are pretty much the same. Not having a HDMI cable included with the 6131 sucks though but they are cheap @ monoprice...:)
If you had said the same about the HD PVR's I would agree wholeheartedly... The new PVR is a single tuner receiver but the older one was a dual tuner receiver which makes the new PVR very much inferior to the older one...

I have a dual tuner PVR and I think it is great. I would never buy a single tuner. My complaint is I can only record eighty hours of programs.

Actually the 9241 PVR is still dual-tuner (i.e., can still record a channel while watching another, or record two different channels at once), it's just that it doesn't have the ability to output to a second TV like the 9242.

If you have a 9242, Bell added the ability to attach an external harddrive to expand your recording space.
In fact, you can also attach an external drive to the 9241, 6141, and the 6131 that is being discussed here.

I'm a Rogers subscriber, so hopefully someone can answer this for me. My grandpa has Bell satellite with a standard box right now, he recently got a new hd tv, but didn't upgrade the box. I'd like to get him one of these, but does he have to have an HD dish also? or will the dish he currently has, work with a new HD box.
Thanks for any info.

Depends on what dish he has now. To get HD you need a HD receiver, dual LNB dish and of course subscribe to the HD packages. When I went HD a couple years ago Bell installed a new dish free as long as I was signing a new program contract. I believe the current promotion includes $100 credit if you add this unit.

you are right, pre NUB
when you say, "first TV in September", "i decide to go for bell", means you are PRE nub, still just a lurker.
Do not buy anything until you commit to a provider and for at least have a TV.
HD receiver do? takes the signal from the dish outside and converts it into HD quality output for a small number of channels, that then goes to the TV via HDMI cable
i already have a receiver takes HDMI 1.3a. is this a TV box or something?
Can you look at the box and get a model number, that would make it easier.
My question to you is, What is a guy doing with a a TV box or something that does not have a TV???

Either you are talking about an over the air receiver or a stereo receiver. Either way, you need a TV with HDMI inputs, which is standard these days on any HD TV.
To answer your question, as this thread is about a Bell 6131, yes, it is a TV box. A Bell (or Videotron, or Rogers, or whatever provider) HD receiver is capable of outputing HD channels (not all channels are HD) via a number of inputs (HDMI being the most convenient).
You need a receiver from a provider if you are going to watch their programming since it's going to be encrypted. Just Google for more information because we can be here all day explaining this. Also, you generally have to pay an extra fee for HD programming. For a list of programs, just go to the provider's website.

i already bought an Toshiba Regza 52'' 120Hz TV and Denon AVR-789 receiver two days ago. I wont need them until September when we moved to our new apartment. We bought them because they were on sale (1699$ for TV and 499$ for receiver)
i will need a TV box in september i just thought TV box should be like something cheap rental(like their wireless modem) if u order TV program from bell. Now seem to me I need to buy them.

The advantage to getting 9241 over the 6131 is that the 9241 already has an internal Harddrive, so you have the PVR option right out of the box. You also have the option to record 2 different shows at the sametime (even while watching a 3rd Pre-recorded show). The 9241 does have the analog outputs for you to connect to a SD TV also.
With the 6131, for this to be a PVR, you need to purchase an additional External HD for it to have the PVR Functionality. Even then, you can't record two shows at once like the 9241 (you can record one show while watching a pre-recorded show at Best). This also has the analog outputs to connec tto SD TV.

I'm thinking of switching to Bell sometime before December because my free Rogers HD PVR is soon ending (thanks RFD for that lol)
I have never used or even seen a tv that has used satellite before so I don't know what I am really getting into.
I have 2 HDTV's in the house now, so if I buy 2 of these recievers, I can just go ahead and order just the digital packages from Bell right? I shouldn't have to pay anything extra for HD content because I already own the boxes.
Do you get all the HD channels with this box or does it only allow for certain packages?
These are pretty noob questions, I just have no idea how satellite really works. I don't want to stay with Rogers anymore and Aliant TV isn't really an option for me.

I had a 9242 crap out on me during it's warranty. The hard drive crashed, and is a common problem with the 9xxx series. Pretty much the only way to fix it is a complete replacement unit. Fine during warranty, but afterwards its going to be an expensive repair.
The 61XX series with an external HD should prevent this sort of thing. If the HD goes, no biggie replace with whatever el cheapo drive and case is available on the market.
I've got both now. Definately thinking about the Dish Care program from Bell that is essentially an extended warranty on all your receivers for $6/mo or something. I'm gun shy now about the 9242 cost of replacement out of warranty.

Take a look at http://bell.ca/programmingguide.
Every Bell subscriber must subscribe to the $32 Digital Standard. This Digital started does come with about 14 HD Channels as seen in the Free HD Channels section. Any HD Channels above and beyond this require you to pay more (having a HD Receiver doesn't entitle you to all HD Channels for free).
$3 - Digital Subscriber Fee (Must pay)
$32 - Digital Standard (Must pay - 14 Free HD Channels)
$1 - HD U.S Time Shifting (Free if you subscribe to 4 HD Theme Packs)
$5 - Per HD/Theme (4 for $10 or $15 for all 5)
The rest of the HD Channels you get automatically when you subscribe to the SD Theme/Package.
Note: To get either of the HD Sports Theme or HD More Sports, you must subscribe to the equilavent SD Sports Themes (which are $8 per SDTheme, 5 for $23, 6 for $26). Also, the prices reflected on the programminggude are prices that take into account Bell multi-product discounts. The prices I quoted above are without the discounts.

Once you are a Bell TV customer, and you setup an account on Bell.ca, you will be able to view your programming and also fool around with adding/removing channels to see what your price will be. But you can't do this until you are an existing client.
Many of the channels you cannot get "a la carte", but feel free to ask, and I'll let you know

Yes. And well, if you are able to setup the Dish equipment yourself, then you could buy and NOT have to go on a 1-2 year contract.
Renting the receivers means you have to go on at least a 1 year contract (most likely 2 years). There is no rent to own option. The benefit though of Renting is you dont have to put up much money to get setup (as Installation is usually covered) and if your receivers break down, free replacement.
If you buy and you CAN NOT setup Dish/Receivers yourself, then you will have to pay for Installation. Though they may be able to waive install fee if you go on some sort of contract.
Standard 4100 SD Receiver
$3 - Rent
$99 - Buy (2 for $150)
6131 HD Reciever
$10 - Rent
$199 - Buy (+$100 New client credit applied on Bill = $99)
$xxx - The cost to buy an external HDD - (optional for PVR Functionality)
9241 - HD PVR Receiver
$20 - Rent
$499 - Buy (+$100 New client credit applied on Bill = $399)
$xxx - The cost to buy an external HDD - (optional - additional space for PVR)

^^ Remember the source has the 6131 for $150 atm minus the $100 credit if you are a new customer. That's the route I just took last week and am happy paying $50 to own the receiver and save the rental fee.
I set up myself, but had to take a 1 year contract to get that $100 credit. Otherwise, free install requires a 2 year contract.
Also, if you order directly online at bell.ca you get an additional $25 "online" credit. I was impatient and wanted to set it up right then rather than wait for bell to ship me the receiver though :)
I got the HBO/Movie Central package which is half price for the first 2 months, will decide after that if I want to keep paying $19 after that for them, so far the movies on movie central have been crap. Got 6 theme packages but no extra HD channels so far, I mostly just watch the networks in HD, but $10 for 4 HD theme packs isn't bad (might get it for HD TSN when the NFL season starts)
I have to agree about the bell site though, they really don't make it easy to see the final price you are going to be paying (until after you are a customer and can sign into your online account it would seem), but that's probably by design :)

Thanks for all that.
I don't have a clue on how to setup a dish, but a buddy of mine might be able to help me out.
Just throwing this out there because I just got flyers in the mail.
Futureshop Flyer August 7 - August 13
Page 28 bottom left hand corner
Bell PVR Ready HD Receiver 6131HD $199.99 - 100 activation fee for new customers
Dual Tuner HD-PVR 9241 $499.99 - 200 activation fee for new customers
No Problem. If you get the 6131, bring The Source flyer (or print out) of the $149.99 price and they'll PM it (you'll get it for $144.99) + $100 activation credit = $44.99 :)

Is there really only just 1 activation credit per account? I want to buy 2 9241 receivers because I have 2 HDTVs.

I presently have a 2700 and only one "horn" on my dish. Do I need to add another horn if I buy an HD receiver? I don't intend to get an HDTV yet, but I have to upgrade my receiver now to get a certain local channel that my 2700 won't receive (or so says the Bell support guy, anyway).
If some work needs to be done on the dish, is it better to buy the receiver online from Bell to get free installation?

You will need a 20" dish (if you don't have it already) and the other LNB (or "horn" as you put it). Probably best to do it through Bell if they will give you the free basic installation to run the extra cabling and then aim the dish so that it picks up the 91 and 82 satellites. You'll also need an SW21 or SW44 switch too which may or may not be provided by Bell.

The dish was installed just last week; I hope it's a 20" one. I have to measure it (I'll be going up there anyway to spray paint over the Bell logo.)
LNB==Low Noise Block downconverter? i.e. it's a mixer and low noise amplifier (LNA)? (I'm trained in microwave engineering but I've never understood the acronyms people use in the satellite industry)
The disadvantage to going through Bell is that they only seem to sell the 9241 now, which is more than twice the price of this one that's on sale.

All programming come off of Sat 91 and 82. All (well most of) your SD programming come through on 91 which is picked up by your 1st "horn" LNB. All your HD Programming come off of 82, so if you were to get an HD Receiver, it will still work (for SD Programming), but you will not pick up any HD Channels until you get that 2nd LNB.
Also, there are a few SD Channels on the 82 (for example, the Porn channels from AOV, AOV Maleflxxx). Even though these are not HD Channels, they still require you to get the 2nd LNB to pick up 82.

Would the signal from the second satellite be coupled onto the single wire that goes from the dish to my TV, or is a second wire required? (or is that what the switch is for) (I very much appreciate you guys answering my newbie questions, btw.)

There will only be one wire coming from the Dish into each Tuner. ie.. 1 going into the 6131 HD Receiver.. and 2 Going into the 9241 (since its a Dual tuner receiver allowing you to watch 2 different programs).

Pretty sure if you only got the dish installed recently that it will be a 20" dish. Don't think they're selling the 18" dishes anymore.

Actually, there will be a line from each LNB which will need to go into an SW21 or SW44 switch which basically combines the two satellite feeds into one wire which then goes into a receiver. The SW21 only allows you to hook up one receiver while the SW44 allows you to hook up to four. Note, for a 9241, it counts as two receivers so you need to run two lines from the switch into it.

So, If I understand this correctly that you can buy the receiver from sourcecc or bell directly and install the dish yourself with 1 year contract. Cause I went bell store they told me that "They have to install the dish and no option of installing yourself even you do they willcharge me installation fee anyway .....some kind of policy or something and was told that they don't have contracts less then 2 years" Am I given the right information here ??
Basically what I want is that HD receiver and some multicultural channels but I am only being offered 2 year plan and they will do the install the dish no option of installing yourself.
Thanks

Is it possible to buy like 4 of these HD receivers for different rooms (eg. bedrooms, living room, basement, etc) and run them from one account? Do they charge quite a lot extra for the access cards for each additional one?

a) These recievers don't use cards. You activate the receiver itself. The smart chip is inside the reciever and is not accessible.
b) Bell does not charge for additional receivers on the same account.

These Switches can be handy. My home is surrounded by trees, so the installer could not find one spot to put a dish that could hit both satellites, however I had a spare dish, so what he did was point one dish to each satellite, then merged the two wires through the switch. With Bell's increase in power output on the HD channels, I can *almost* run all year now ( the tree's still do affect my HD channels, however as long as it isn't windy or rainy, I can still watch them, whereas the years past, they were unwatchable during "leaf-out" )

That's incorrect. I just signed up last week. We already had a dish installed and all wired, and pointing correctly from a previous tenant. I simply purchased the 6131 from futureshop, came home, plugged in the cable and power to the receiver, called and created an account with Bell, and was watching programming within about 15-20 minutes.

You can pick up a 1TB drive for around $100 these days, so for around $250'ish, you can have an HD PVR with A LOT of storage space. I bought a 9200 when they first came out and the harddrive failed about two years in. Bell sold me a refurbed unit for $150 plus my broken receiver. If it craps out on me again, think I'd just pick up two 6131's and add external drives to them.

Yup. If you're already got a dish with both LNBs, it's pretty much plug-and-play.
I don't think the 92xx receivers count as two receivers on your account. At one point, I had two 9200xx receivers, two 3100's and one 5100 activated (i.e. 7 tuners). But you will require another switch such as an SW44a so that you have enough lines to run to each receiver.

Just to clarify...I'm prob going to pick one up this weekend.
I already have a 9242, so the switches (SW44) are all good in the basement. I have 2 lines running to the 9242 (dual tuner)
With the 6131 I would only require 1 line? My plan is to unplug the 4100 and replace with the 6131.
This should work?

Yep, just swap out the 4100 with the 6131 (only one line required from SW44), run a check switch under the Installation - Point Satellite menu and you should be enjoying HD goodness in no time. :)

That's right, there is an installation charge of $99 unless you sign a 2 year contract, then the installation charge is waived.
I did self install, but had to sign a 1 year contract to get the $100 credit for the 6131 receiver. I suppose you could just pay the $150 for the receiver and not sign a contract and not get the $100 credit back.

What sort of dish(es) would be needed to hook up 6 receivers? Is there one dish that can handle all six or would 3 be needed? Is there anything special needed to receive international channels?
Do these HD receivers need to be hooked up to a phone line? I was thinking of maybe having one of the six installed where there isn't a phone line readily available. Is the 6131 remote an RF one where you don't have to have the receiver in the line of sight to control it?

phone line is optional, I believe you only need it to be able to order PPV right from the receiver, even if its not plugged in though you can order PPV online or over the phone anyway. I just signed up and we are a cell phone only household, they said its not a problem at all.

I wouldn't do it; I've read on other forums that even mentioning you own a cottage will get your account flagged (they may call and ask for location IDs for all receivers to be read to them over the phone, which is difficult to do if they are in different homes).

Yes, you can enjoy Bell TV service at a second location such as a cottage, vacation property or second home. Only one location can be active at a time.
If you're at your second location, you must call us to disable the receivers in your main home. If you wish to have active receivers in two locations at once, you must open a second Bell TV account.

If you're no longer on contract with them, try calling thier retention line. You should be able to get a 1 year free rental deal for the 9141. This way you can test out the unit for a year then decide if you want it. One year is a long time, maybe they will have a better HD/PVR out by then.
You can try searching for the Bell/TV retention thread to get an idea on how to get this deal.

Not sure exactly what you mean by Monthly Service Charge. Whenever a credit is applied to your account, its applied to the entire account.
ie:
$32 - Digital Standard
$ 3 - Digital Service Fee
$26 - 6 Themes
-------------
$20 - HDPVR Rrental
-------------
-$100 - Activiation Credit
