Current subscription probably required
For those that have a radio I just called to cancel my subscription (radio broke) and was offered the new Sportster 5 radio for free including shipping. Once I called to cancel i was transfered to the retention department or whatever its called and they guy offered it to me no problems. The first radio he offered was the starmate but i asked for the sportster and he said that was fine.
I have also had a friend get a free boombox when he tried to cancel his account. If you have one it its worth a shot since its free. If you dont you can always try and see what happens you might get a radio for free who knows.

I called to cancel last week, and the best I could do is get $50 off the lifetime subscription, and 50% off on any radio. I ended up getting the lifetime sub, cuz that's all I really wanted and passed on the radio.

I called in last week to cancel and was offered a 12 for 6 package for both my radios. So basically a 50% discount for a year. Didn't really say anything special just that I didn't use them enough to jusify the cost and was offered the 12 for 6 package. Now if only I could get the liquore store to give me a 12 pack of beer for the price of 6 :-)

I just canceled my subscription few weeks back ... and when i told the gal on the phone that i want to cancel best she could do i give me 1 month free. I wasn't planing to renew my subscription anyway as i wasn't using it enough to justify paying $160 a year for the service.
I was a bit surprised that 1 month was the only thing i was offered i guess business must be good :)

I still don't get the point of having a sat. radio in my car when the one that it came with works fine. I have a friend (cough, cough) that uses one of those nice "grey market" receivers and a set of external wireless speakers with no problems. Although it seems to be a more basic package with no premium stations...At least the price is right.

In Canada, Sirius is the dominant force. XM is nothng here. That's why the 0pricing isn't as competitive here. Now, if we got a US subscription....maybe then we'd have better luck. Still, there is no definitive answer on whether it's advantageous or not to get a US subscription over a Canadian one. I havent sat down to compare the channels offered by both US and Canada Sirius.

There is a benefit to having the US subscription. Yesterday, I turned on my radio to find a number of channels had been temporarily replaced in Canada only to make way for playoff coverage NBA and NHL. Basically, it seems like CanCon rules popped into place and they couldn't just add a few channels:
http://www.xmradio.ca/onxm/lineup.cfm
The US on the other hand had a number of channels ADDED to their service.

I spent several hours this evening constructing a spreadsheet comparing the XM (USA) and Sirius (USA and CAN) channels.
I have discovered that XM and Sirius USA have quite a bit of overlapping stations. Sirius (USA) has 6 stations that are the same on XM, except you can only listen to them via Sirius INTERNET and you can listen to them, like Mad Dog on XM. You can't listen to SIR 1 to SIR 6 via radio. You also don't get the Traffic Stations with a Canadian subscription.
The downside to XM is their sound quality. The sound quality is pumped through at 32 kbps which is fine for talk radio but not acceptable for music. In contrast, you can pay an additional $3/month to get 128 kbps sound on Sirius. No such thing on XM. Coverage is also better on Sirus than XM.

I have XM in my vehicle. My free trial expired the end of March. I signed up on http://www.xmradio.com/ for a new account using a US address (don't have to live there, just pick an address they don't send mail anyway). I then called the US toll free number and said my free trial had expired and what could they offer me for a subscription. I got 6 months at $4.99US a month. The agent then told me if I don't cancel before the end of the 6 months they will renew for another 6 months at the same rate. They just charge your credit card. Its a good deal and it works in both the US and Canada as I just got back from a trip to Arizona, and a lot of the channels are the same as Sirius since they have merged.

i found out that even sirius' audio is 32 kbps and to attain the 128 kbps, you need to listen to it ONLINE and pay an additional $2.99 US. I wish I could, but I just can't listen to AM quality audio and pay for it as well. :(

You get the 128k for free if you subscribed before March 11th for the length of your service contract. I have it for life now because of the lifetime subscription. If you're not getting it, call XM ListenerCare and complain.

XM and Sirius are operating separately on the web. If you want to sign on with a US address like I did (see my post and the deal I got) then you would go here http://www.sirius.com/ to sign on and activate your Sirius radio.

I like it better.
1. I travel a lot and I get uninterrupted signal everywhere I go (unlike FM).
2. To keep up with current music I would always be burning a new CD but with satellite I am always current.
3. I can listen to Howard Stern.

If you don't listen to the radio, it's also one of the few ways to hear 'new' music. I love finding stuff I haven't heard, and it's great for that.
Normal radio is all commercials, and the same 10 songs played 3 times a day. It's horrible.
So I personally consider Satellite to be worth it.
...Unfortunately I decided to finally subscribe around the time they merged and decided to wait for the dust to clear instead. Why aren't they merged in Canada yet? Do they plan on it soon? When will they both stop selling their own radios, and focus on joint ones? I guess the current ones can likely get both (?), but I'd still like to see what they come up with when both companies technology combine to make one product. It seems like I should be waiting for some of these things to resolve before starting a new subscription.....

There is no merge in the works for Canada at this time. The Canadian companies are distinct from the U.S. Sirius and XM in Canada are two separate companies which have separate agreements in place to furnish product they acquire from the U.S. There is already one (interoperable) radio available which can handle both technologies.

Ditto, I've had my Stilleto for about 3 years now. I went from 50 cd's in the car to about 2, my radio is programmed for 2 stations(instead of 6), my local rock channel and my sirius. I also find that sirius (octane, faction) don't play the same song every 15 minutes like on some local radio stations. You can sometimes hear the same song played 3 times in 2 hours. Too many commericals, too much talk. And the variety! I can go from hard rock, to 80's to country to Nascar Radio, and nhl playoffs. With the Stiletto I can record programs or songs and plug them into my favorites so when that song comes on(no matter what channel) it will tell me. You can't do that with FM. I can also use it for cutting the grass, or snowblowing the yard, or going for a jog. So to me it is very handy to have, that is why after a 2 year subscription I got the lifetime on it. Now I have a car kit in each car, and I am looking to buy the slbb-1 boombox. That's just my opionion, it all depends what you want it for and what you can do with it. An Ipod was never enough for my needs so I went with Sirius.

On the contrary...XM's sound quality is better than Sirius...do some reserach, maybe look at CNET's Sat Radio Guide (http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-6466_7-5068442-2.html)
I have an Alpine head unit in my car that was XM ready and I bought the add-on module for it and activated the radio...I have to say the quality of the XM music is far superior to regular FM stereo. I think a lot of people lose quality when they go to the FM modulating units (i.e. the XM is picked up by a tuner and then "re-broadcasted" to your existing FM radio. This FM modulation in itself offers a lot of signal loss and thus a decrease in quality.
As of 2007, XM had 7.5+ million customers and Sirius had just over 5 Million
As for coverage, yes Sirius covers all of North America whereas XM only covers Continental United States and Canada, but isn't that enough for most of us?

One thing not taken into account there though is Sirius's subscriber based increased by like 6 times within a 2 years period, which is crazy. They were definitely going to surpass XM, and I believe by the time the merger happened, they actually had.
Say what you want about Stern, but before he came to Sirius they had under one million subscribers. All he needed to bring over was one million new subscribers to pay his salary (which is actually the shows salary) and he did WAY more than that. And did it within a year.
Is Cnet's satellite guide current? I have heard these sound quality issues are a new thing (since the merger)

I have and my info is from research including from past and present Sirius/XM owners. That link is kinda dated. Those that have any kind of "ear" for music (which is always subjective) say the quality is crap. However, in the past, XM was better, at around 64 kbps. If you know the technical part, 32 kbps which is no better than AM radio can't sound good (to a lot of people). The bottom line is that if u like talk radio, sports, and comedy then Satellite radio is for you, but if you enjoy listening to FM quality or better music, then it's not.

Totally agree. I love my iPod and my exisitng collection of music. But I sometimes like to discover new bands, which is hard if you only listen to you iPod. I listen to Liquid Metal (formally Hard Attack) and NFL Radio the most, but I also enjoy Lithium, Bone Yard, Octane and sometime Hair Nation and Comedy channels. I rarely listen to CD's or my iPod in my truck anymore and I even stream Sirius to my cellphone to listen to it at locations where my radio isn't.
If it wasn't for Sirius I probably never would have discovered Volbeat, I heard a few of their songs on Liquid Metal and really enjoyed them so I got their albums (3 of them) and haven't enjoyed a new band this much in a very long time. If you like rock/metal check out Volbeat, I truly love them now and wouldn't have even known they exist without Sirius. They now have a place on my iPod too.
I also really enjoyed the month of Mandatory Metallica on Liquid Metals station too, great stuff. Sirius is one of the bills I pay each month that I don't question, it is $15 well spent. I enjoy it so much that I haven't even considered calling asking for a discounted rate (even though I'd probably get it) because to me $15 is a great deal already. I know this is probably in violation of standard RFD practice but I'm cool with that. I've had Sirius for about 32 months and have never regretted it.

How common are the ads now?
That is a bad move on their part. One of the key selling features was lack of ads. They should trim the fat and get rid of some of the big names they have hired if they want to save money. I think very few of the big investments they made (other than Stern) ever really paid off for them.

I've had a lifetime sub to Sirius for over two years now, so I can't really expect to get any deals.
Is it worth it? To me, 100%. You get music you can't find on regular radio, you get no commercials unless you choose to listen to stations that have them, you can pause live radio if you get a phone call or are having a conversation. I drive around Ontario quite a bit, and I don't have to worry about what radio station is coming from the next town.
In fact, if I'm driving my wife's car for any length of time I start 'jonesing' to get back to my Sirius radio because I want to listen to lots of different music, not just the commercials in the "back to music in 2 minutes or less" segments that ALWAYS seem to pop up.

Says you. I have a lifetime sub and I just changed my radio from an Inno*** to an XMP3 because my Inno was broken. Easy swap, and no charge (supposed to be a $75 fee).
Officially, lifetime subs are allowed to change 3 times for a $75 fee per change. You are exempt from the fee and counting towards your 3 switches if it's a replacement for a radio that's still under warranty. Sometimes they'll exempt the fee if it's stolen but that isn't an official rule.
However, if the lifetime sub is for a in-vehicle radio, then the lifetime sub is with the car. You can not transfer it to another radio unless it's stolen or is replaced under warranty for the same vehicle.
I have XM but the same rules applies to Sirius since the whole lifetime sub was a Sirius invention.
*** If anybody has an Inno and would like some cheap accessories PM me. I have extra batteries, car/home docks that I don't need anymore.

Umm... you need to do some research. What Jonavin said is correct. You're allowed to change your radio 3 times. In my case, I've been using the same radio for over 2 years(two 1-year subs) now, so the Sirius CSR said they would prolly not consider that my first radio since I've already had it for so long. He said the next radio I get would be considered my first one, and they would prolly waive the $75 fee to change radios because of that.

Like any electronics, yes, eventually..but I think the norm is that these radios are pretty solid and I wouldn't worry about one dying. I think people move up in radios cause they like the style of the new one, features like pause\rewind...but I don't think they are changing radios cause the old one breaks.
I have an original radio that still works, but I moved up a couple times now...never though cause of the radio dying.

People saying that they hear ads on Sirius and mad about it aren't really paying attention. Sirius has always advertised commercial-free music, talk radio and all that stuff has always had ads.

My g/f got a years free sirius radio when she purchased her new Jeep. It expired last month and I just called in a couple days ago and expressed interest in signing up if they would offer us some kind of a deal. They wouldn't do anything. I was willing to sign a year or two even but they wouldn't budge at all. Anyone have any suggestions to get them to offer a better deal?
Call them back and tell them you are cancelling it... then they will give it to you...
I called and want to cancel my subscription... Give it to me for 15 or 10 month..... but i still cancelled it anyway.....

I had a 6 mth sub that came free with my new Focus, it ran out recently. I recieved an offer for 3 mths at regular price but with a free 25 dollar gas card, so I grabbed this offer.
In some ways I wish that I could "upgrade" my radio but I guess I'm stuck with what came with the car. It would be nice to be able to rewind live radio, and also to take the radio into the house with me.

Why not use it both in the house and car?
I use mine in the house mainly. It came with an AC adaptor and antenna so that's all you need. I also have a Car Kit with second antenna and cig. lighter adaptor, but mainly use it indoors.

I've had a Sirius sub for 6 months now. They waived the activation fee when I first joined which was cool. I listen to it but I'm going to cancel...I may take a free month or 2 but I will surely cancel after.
The content is great, I really like it which is frustrating because the sound quality is so bad, it's miles away from the quality of a clear FM signal. Heavy compression artifacts and a very limited upper FQ range, I'd say no higher than 10khz. I would pay the sub fee and even more for far fewer channels broadcast in better quality (ie. 160kbps +).
I suppose if you mostly listen to talk radio, it's acceptable but I mostly listen to music. I just can't get over the poor SQ.

I've been a subscriber ever since Howard Stern jumped over to Sirius. I had reception problem for years.
A few months ago, I went to Best Buy and they installed all wires of my Sportmate inside my dash and connected it directly in the radio which meant that the quality would just like listening to your local FM station. The guy preset my unit to 88.9 FM and I've never adjusted it since then.
It cost me around $40-45 but best investment I made since I got Sirius.
Since then, no issues with channel, signal & volume reception.
Invest a few bucks and it will equal in a stress free experience!

Like others here, it is worth it to me because although I have an iPOd full of music, I still listen to Sirius a lot to hear new music. Which I then go download to my iPod!
Also, the music I hear on Liquid Metal, Sirius U, and Backspin, is stuff I would never hear on FM radio.
Finally, with my Sirius subscription, I can listen free online all day at work, which is what I'm doing right now.

I agree. I like finding new music to listen to, and I HATE pop music(at least the stuff from the late 90s to now). Stations I always listen to are Sirius/XM U(better when it was Left of Center), Alt Nation, Lithium, Iceberg, Sirius/XM Chill, 90s, 80, 1st Wave, BBC Radio 1, and a couple other stations I'm forgetting. Most of my time is spent on Sirius/XM U and Alt Nation.
I mainly listen to it to find new indie bands/music, and stuff I listened to while growing up.

I'm not sure what they're supposed to do, but in my case I didn't get any follow-up by mail; instead, my radio display simply said to call to subscribe. They didn't offer any deal when I called, so I haven't been in a rush to sign up.
Even though my car is Siruis-ready, I'm inclined to get a portable unit (presumably, it could plug in though my car's MP3 jack, not sure if I could hook in to the car's existing Sirius antenna) so that I could use the same unit at home and in the car on only one subscription.

If you get a portable unit it would work by jacking into the AUX plug, or you can set it to broadcast to your car stereo on an unused FM frequency. It would also come with its own antenna that you could place on the dash or, if magnetic, stick on the roof for better reception.

Definitely look into the Stilleto.
I have one and use it in my truck, docking station in my office, and while working out.
If the signal is poor at the gym I just play the stored songs from the onboard memory. The newerone you can add your own mp3's
I think you get way more bang for your buck with the portable unit.

Depending on whether you have a Mac or a PC you have varying options. There are stand-alone programs that aren't Sirius affliliated. The Mac program that currently works is called Pulsar. $15, I think, if you are afraid of digging (if you know what I mean).
The PC version used to be called StarPlayr. It was great but when it became popular Sirius was able to somehow block the program from connecting to the stream. I'm sure there are other PC options out there, just google it. I'm a Mac user so I'm not as familiar with the PC versions.
As with any of these programs they will work great one day and then be blocked the next. But all of these programs are 100x better and more functional then the shhheit Sirius Online version.
Good luck.

thanks for posting, I was offered a sportster 5 for free today, well almost free I had to pay $10-$11 shipping, which I think it absurd, but my original sportster replay is on its last legs so i reluctantly took it. I was offered 50% off a radio at first and simply said, "I'll take one if its free."

Do people have any bargaining power when a Sirius subscription is about to end? Mine is due to run out in Aug and I'd like to renew at a lower rate than their regular price. I've seen people in the US get some good discounts, but not seen that many here.

Next time you run it, it remembers your password so no extra logging in. And the sound quality is great too; the app says it's 128 kbps.

well all I can say is that it worked for me, but I'm sure its dependent on the rep that you get. I just chose the option to cancel my sub and talked to them from there. Of course it helped that a buddy had gone through the same experience so just followed his lead and got a similar deal. They will usually do something to retain paying subscribers.

Although the app is $10 (cheaper if you have a jailbroken phone) it's very easy to use. And once you've "favourited" the Sirius station, you won't have to re-enter your login info.
BTW, it's a great app for ANY internet station. I even have it running my BBC radio stations which was next to impossible on other players.

Just got off the phone with Sirius. I've had a month to month sub for a couple of years. I told them I was thinking of dropping it because I couldn't justify the cost. They transferred me to customer relations. CR asked why I wanted to cancel and i told them cost. They asked if I listen to music only, which I do and they offered their "Mostly Music?" package that's all music stations except the specialty ones like Elvis and Springsteen. It's $9.99 per month, but no Stern/ talk/ sports. I never listen to them anyway. There's also NO ONLINE ACCESS either for this package. I hummed and hawed and asked about a yearly sub. She then offered me a yearly sub of full programming for half price. I took it.:D

My 3-month free subscription I got with my VW ran out, so I called to see what deals I could get.
I said I was willing to pre-pay for 2 years and they said the prices were 'on the website'
I asked to speak to retentions, they said since I wasn't 'canceling' I couldn't.
I spoke with a manager, who basically said the 'price is the price' and that it was non-negotiable.
Think if I sign up for one month at $14.99 and call in 28 days to cancel, they will make me an offer?

I called Sirius today to bite the bullet and pay for month to month. Woman was really nice, asked how I like my 3 months so far. I told her I only actually got 2.5 months, since I picked up my car later than the invoice date.
So, she put me on hold, came back and said she could offer another 3 months to ensure I got a good feel for the service, no strings attached, which I gladly accepted.
So:
Yesterday I tried to get a deal on a 2 year subscription, no dice
Today, I tried to sign up for month to month, and they gave it to me free

Call about a week before your free trial expires. Tell them you want to cancel; make up any excuse as to why. They will transfer you to retentions and offer you some kind of deal. Never pay the regular price of $14.99/month. You can also sign on the US website and get a better deal. See my previous posts on this. I got XM for $4.99/month through the US web site.

I just called retentions today as my service runs out tomorrow and managed to get 1 year of service for $92.86 inc. tax without too much trouble.
The rep just asked why I was cancelling and I told her that I couldn't justify the cost anymore. I said I'd consider re-activating at a later date if there was a significant price drop or promo. She then said that there's a promo for 12 months, so I signed up for it then and there.
I consider it a good deal as my wife has the radio in the Mazda5 most time of the time, but I use the iPhone app (Pocket Tunes) to listen to Sirius on my phone when I'm in my car, so it's like 2 subs for the price of one!

Yeah you need to call them. Just make sure you have a US address to give them, then just give them your credit card number and expiry. The addresses don't need to match; they just go ahead and charge your credit card.
Mine does not include the best of XM. Ask for their best deal before you sign up. Don't accept anything for more than $10 a month. At one point I got $4.99/month when I first signed on (special 6 month deal) then they increased it to $8.99. You should even be able to get a yearly rate for less than $100 from what I have heard. That is what I am going to get next time I re-new.

I got a call from Sirius Canada last week asking if I'd renew a subscription that had expired in March (had received a 12 month free trial with my Chrysler lease). Here is the sequence of what they offered:
6 months for 5 at reg rates ($14.99/mo) - No thx
6 months for 4 - No thx
6 months at 3 - No thx
3 months for 2 - No thx
3 months for 1 !!! - No thx
So it appears that there are XM type deals for Sirius Canada subscribers (ie. $5/month). The reason that I turned them down on all their offers was because they had forgotten to turn off my free subscription (currently at 17 months and counting) :D.
I did receive an email about a month ago to do a customer satisfaction survey from Sirius. I put my contact info and that's why they called.

Sirius called me yesterday, got 7.99 total for 3 months. This is a second radio. You gotta watch it though, what they will do is after it expires they will auto charge you full pop on a renew. Not sure if it will be for a quarter or try and charge you for the year, so make sure you cancel the pre-authorization before it goes through.

I called a few days ago, I have 2 radios and was paying month to month. I called and said I would like to cancel both, just couldn't afford it any more. She offered 6 months free on both radios if I paid up front for 6 months. Basically 50% off a years subscription. Couldn't pass that up!! Worked out to 80 something on one radio and 50 something on the 2nd radio...sorry, forget the exact numbers.50% off for the year is their standard retention plan. I got that back in August. Can't really complain for that price, and I get to listen to Sirius on my iphone too so I effectively get 2 subs for the price of one. :D

How are you getting these deals. Mine is about to expire in a couple days and they wouldn't give me any deal at all. I hung up without purchasing anything. Any tips? :)
Edit - I called 1-888-539-7474 and hit option 5 which is to cancel. They offered me $134.00 for the year instead of $164.89. I have only been with them a year and they said they had better deals for customers who have been there longer. Didn't take it.

Did you actually talk to the folks in rentention or just a random csr? Talk to retentions and tell them you want to cancel, you just can't afford payments that high any longer. If some promotion comes up, or if the price comes down in the future, you will resubscribe.
I said that and got 50% off right away on both of my radios. I have never called retentions and not got some kind of deal (free months, free radio, 50% off).

I wonder if you guys got that because of the second radio.
I just have the one radio at month to month and Ive had it for around a year, not sure if they would swing the 50% off deal my way...

How long did you have the sub for? I'll try and give them a call today and see what happens...

Called back and got the year at 50% off also. The problem was, our Sirius came with a new car we bought so they said technically we didn't pay for the year. They said you had to be a "paying" customer before you got the deal. If you are, the deal for 50% off a year is standard.
1-888-539-7474 and hit option 5 which is to cancel. They are authorized to give you the deal in that department. :)

Called in and got the same 50% off for a year.
At first he offered the 3 months for the price of 1, which I declined saying I would need something long term for it to be worth it for me and he came back with the 12months deal.
Thanks guys!

I just called and they offered me two free months which I took. Then the guy (matt) called me back a few minutes later and asked for my credit card number to credit it $40. does this sound suspicious to anyone? They already must have my info since they charge it every month.

I just called and apparently the deals people have been getting is because Ford & Chrysler have been partnering with Sirius to provide the discounted options - i.e. 3 months for the price of 1 and also the 50% off for a year...
I have a Mazda so it seems I am SOL...
Anyone driving a Mazda that has called in and received this deal?

Anyone driving a Mazda that has called in and received this deal? It's not about what car you have it in. I have one of the portable radio kits so it can go into any car and I got the 50% off without breaking a sweat. It's more to do with you paying a couple of months out of your own pocket once your "free 6 months with a new car promo" runs out. After a couple of months, call into to cancel saying it's too expensive. They'll soon offer you a deal to stay subscribed.

I think it works better if you're going for the full year, and have multiple radios. He didn't even hesitate to offer the 50% off when I said I wanted to cancel.
This was my first renewal too, I've only had it for a year now.
Came to $147 and change for both for the full year.

I just called Sirius today about my November renewal. I told the CSR that after my subscription runs out I couldn't afford $15/month anymore. I asked if there was any promotions for a better price. She said no, the only promo was a free radio. I immediately asked for Retentions.
I told the same story to Retentions. She offered me 25% off for a year and I said no, I need better than that. Then she said the best she could offer is 50% off for a year. SOLD!
Then I called XM about my wifes radio. Long story short, I haggled them down from the $15/month to $5/month for 6 months. SOLD!

I got free Sirius with my Mazda car and I really don't like it. It sounds worse than FM (sounds like a badly encoded 128kbs mp3), although there's 200 channels only 3-4 channels are my genre of music and the rest are filler...imho, and it takes 1-2 seconds to change between channels.

I'm am kicking myself for not doing the lifetime fee... I was actually thinking about paying for the lifetime subscription when they decided to remove that option... but I'm going to try the rentention route once my subscription comes up again for renewal ;)

I took it when I got the free year, back then the free year was 12 times the amount per months credited in the account. So I used a part of my free year credit and applied to the one time fee and only payed the difference. Not bad.

the 50/50 1 year plan is still easy to get.
$94.11 incl taxes for 1 year.
told them how irate i was about the cancellation of the lifetime sub, she did say that they have been getting alot of call regarding this, and she wouldn't be surprised to see it return again.
also mentioned the great deals that XM people are getting, right off the bat she went to the 1 year for the price of 6 months.

These rates are BAD. Subscribers in the USA have reportedly been getting Sirius w/premium online listening (128 kbps) for $5/month.
