I had the previous generation Fridgidaire from Costco. The accesories were garbage. I returned it right away. I bought the Nutone from Home Depot and have been very happy. The Hoover from Costco is also a good buy when it goes on sale.

I find that the Nutone does not always pick up the threads? Do you have that problem?

Don't know about the Frigidaire, but the Hoover goes on sale about once a year for $200 off. We bought ours in the fall and works great.

I received and installed this vacuum yesterday, and vacuumed the house this morning with it.

I could tell no difference in cleanliness between it and the Beam we just replaced it with (it picked up everything, had powerful suction, wasn't too loud). The power-head is a bit lighter than our previous (not necessarily a bad thing), and worked well as well.

The hose, handle, and attachments are good quality, although I haven't used them extensively (obviously).

My two cents after one vacuuming :P

Cheers.

ps. UPS "delivered" it and just left it on my front veranda all day...I avoid them like the plague if I have a choice.

I installed mine about 2.5 years ago and really like it. It is powerful and accessories quality is fine. For this price you can't go wrong. I also like that it has bags - makes it easier to clean.

This might go without saying, but I didn't know when we bought our first central vac and bought a bunch of bags when i didn't need to...

That is, the bags are optional in that they basically just act as a garbage bag you replace every few months. I don't use them on mine and just empty the bucket (sans bag) instead.

Does anyone know if central vacs are eligible for the home renovation tax credit? I know appliances aren't but this is an installed fixture.

You may also want to compare it with Canavac's sales at Vacmaster.

http://www.the-vacmaster.ca/index.html

They have the Model 250LS for $399 with hose and brush head, etc...

Similar Air Watts ~580.

I just installed mine. The on/off switch on the handle does not do anything unless I am using the power head. I would have thought that the on/off switch on the handle would turn everything off, the whole vacuum not just the power head.

Do I have it working properly??

I came across a website earlier today which talks about the on/off switch on those central vac handle.
They said there are two type, the basic one only turn on/off the power head, and the other type have 3-way switch which turn both the main unit and the power head on/off at the same time.
For the basic one, you will have to disconnect the hose to turn off the main unit.

Hope this help.

The Hoover from Costco is also a good buy when it goes on sale.

Anyone know how much is the Hoover one at Costco? I can't find that on the Costco.ca website.

Thanks.

I just received and installed mine last week. This is the way it's supposed to work. I was a bit disappointed that it's not a 3-way switch and even more disappointed that it wasn't even shipped with the correct manual and installation instructions . On the plus side it is significantly quieter than the unit it replaced and doesn't scare the crap out of me when I'm working in the garage and my wife turns it on .

Does anyone know if central vacs are eligible for the home renovation tax credit? I know appliances aren't but this is an installed fixture.

I don't think that it does as it is not intergral to the house (ie you can take it with you when you move):

http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/gncy/bdgt/2009/fqhmrnvtn-eng.html#q6:

15. Could you provide me with some examples of eligible and ineligible expenditures?

Yes, some examples are:

Eligible Ineligible
Renovating a kitchen, bathroom or basement
New carpet or hardwood floors
Building an addition, garage, deck, garden/storage shed, fence
Re-shingling a roof
A new furnace, woodstove, boiler, fireplace, water softener or water heater
A new driveway or resurfacing a driveway
Painting of interior or exterior of a house
Window coverings directly attached to the window frame and whose removal would alter the nature of the dwelling
Laying new sod
Swimming Pools (Permanent - in ground and above ground)
Fixtures – lights, fans, etc.
Associated costs such as permits, professional services, equipment rentals and incidental expenses.
Furniture, appliances, and audio and visual electronics
Purchasing of tools
Cleaning carpets
House cleaning
Maintenance contracts (e.g. furnace cleaning, snow removal, lawn care, and pool cleaning)
Financing costs
16. What types of expenditures will not qualify?

The following expenditures will not be eligible for the HRTC:

the cost of routine repairs and maintenance normally performed on an annual or more frequent basis;
expenditures that are not integral to the dwelling, and other indirect expenditures that retain a value independent of the renovation;
expenditures for appliances and audio-visual electronics; and
financing costs.

I saw the CRA examples but it is not clear since above ground Swimming Pools, lights, fans, etc. clearly also retain value independent of the renovation.

Hubby is not great with putting things together. Are these central vacs easy to install for the neophyte?

How much does it cost to hire someone to install a central vac?

Is it alright to install the unit into the basement? We don't have a rough in but it would be quite simple to install it downstairs, compared to trying to route piping through the drywall out to the garage.
