Hey guys! Sorry if this topic is in the wrong thread but....here goes:

I want to travel from HK (roughly may 20th) to Japan, but I have been having trouble finding deals on websites, google, flight companies, etc.

I found a couple from Air China / Cathay ranges from 1 - 1.5k CAD! My round trip flight from Vancouver to HK costs only 745CAD!

Any suggestions? I heard flights from Macao -> Japan would be cheaper, but I couldn't find any....

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

-Rob

PS: Not sure if this helps but... I am traveling from

Vancouver -> HK -> Japan -> HK -> Vancouver, over a period of 1 month

ANA (All-Nippon Airlines) flies that route 3 times daily, they may be cheaper than JAL as they are a bit of a discount airline in comparison. They fly to Tokyo Haneda (more convenient if you are heading downtown) and Narita airports. You would have to call them as their North american website does not accept inter-Asia bookings.
We flew that route with them last year, their service does not seem discount like at all.

How long will you be in Tokyo? If you are staying 7 days or less you may be in luck. I found out about this promotion when I was planning a 1-week trip to HK with my girlfriend (me leaving from Toronto and my g/f leaving from Tokyo), and she suddenly had something come up that needed her to return to Tokyo for one day. She was able to fly for 3150 HKD, which is still 520CAD or so, but a lot cheaper than 1.5 ;)

Cathay flies HKG-NRT 5 times a day, so although their posted fares may not always be cheap, a lot of these flights have pretty low occupancy so I guess they're trying to make back some money through this promotion. Just book the flight directly from the Cathay website and make sure the period of stay is 7 days or less and falls within the travel dates below.

Also, I was able to find a return HKG-NRT return flight on Northwest for US$300 or so on orbitz.com too, but Cathay had more flexible schedules since NWA only does the route once a day (I believe), so we decided to shell out a bit more and go with Cathay instead. Note that this was in early February, and we were booking the travel for right in the middle of February (Feb 18th-ish)

Also, toureast.com may also be worth checking.

Give it a shot and let us know what you find.

Edit: Oh yeah, and since the Japanese airlines are dropping the fuel surcharge for YYZ/YVR-NRT starting April 1st, YYZ/YVR-NRT fares will probably drop around then. Not sure if this will affect HKG-NRT though.

I was looking for the same flight during the same time period. Best I can find is ~$3,700 HKD return.

Other than kayak.com, you can check out zuji.com, which is a Asian centered travel site.

I have been following the deals pretty close, but haven't really found any good deals/promotions yet for May travel dates.

If I were you, I would wait until you get to HK and check out travel agents there before committing to anything.

Thanks for all the feedback guys! Isn't it too risky to wait at the last minute to book flights? We REALLY want to stay in Japan for 2 weeks after HK.

Thanks!

I just booked the same trip as you are doing but from Toronto. Total for me was 1285 for travel during September. YYZ-HKG-NRT-HKG-YYZ. Was pretty hard finding a flight for HKG-NRT-HKG.
Most cost about 4000hkd.
I think it would have been cheaper if you bought it with your yvr-hkg ticket cause then some of the travel agencies can find a way to book it as a stopover instead of a seperate flight which costs less.
But for now you're better off looking at cathay or JAL after April 1st for the fuel surcharge to come down first.

As a sidenote, i tried booking YYZ-NRT and the total was $1300+ of which $452 of the price was for fuel surcharge. Talk about a ripoff!

Found one on Orbitz.

NorthWestern Airlines, $500 round trip! Now I need to book it.... I'm surprised with the price difference... Cathay is also listed with NorthWestern Airlines the cost is 2x as much. Cathay has a lot more available slots though

Last March I flew round trip HK to Narita via *I think* it was called Taipei Air? It's the major airline out of Taiwan. Found the tix on Kayak about 3 weeks before for just over $500 CDN. ANA was the cheapest around though at somewhere over $400. A bunch of us were booking and those that booked first got it for less. If you go to one of their offices in HK you can buy a rail pass at the same time. In case you didn't know- you can't buy the railpass when you're in Japan.
