Hi,

My wife and I are planning to book a cruise trip for Sept this year and thinking about the need to purchase Trip cancellation insurance mainly just in case of uncertainty with our 2 yr daughter (eg, if she gets sick).

I have checked into our CIBC aerogold infinite VISA and it does provide coverage for trip interruption (during the trip) BUT NOT trip cancellation (before the trip). Can anyone comment if any other credit card will offer trip cancellation coverage (eg, we also have AMEX, RBC VISA)?

If I want to just buy the trip cancellation insurance, where would you recommend and any idea on $/person say for a $1000/person trip? BCAA (we are from vancouver)? Thanks in advance.

Peter

Not sure about a credit card that offers trip cancellation insurance, but I've booked most of my flights online (either through something like expedia or directly from the specific airline) and most of them give you the option of purchasing trip insurance at the time of purchase. (You may be able to add it in later -- not sure about that). Otherwise you have lots of other options. I've done most travel insurance through PCFinancial because they have good rates. You can also try www.kanetix.ca to get online quotes from different companies.

I would look into seeing what your home/auto insurance company offers. You can get trip cancellation coverage for the entire year instead of just for the one trip.

Beware that it's very hard to claim trip cancellation.
Covered reasons are death in immediate family, illness requiring hospitalization, etc.
They won't cover you if you decide to cancel your trip, just because your 2 yr old has cough and fever. The reason has to be something way beyond your control.

Check the cost and covered reasons thoroughly with the insurance provider.
