If I'm travelling within Canada and I'm flying from:
-Fort McMurray to Calgary
-Layover in Calgary
-Calgary to Toronto

Would I need to pick up my bags and check them in again? Or should my bags be moved to the next flight by Air Canada?

After exiting the plane I would (assuming I don't want to go outside) just stay in the flight waiting area and I wouldn't need to worry about anything else?

Sorry if the questions seem stupid, I tried looking on the Air Canada site and I couldn't find any mention of this. Going through the FAQ through their phone service was less helpful than their website.

Anything interesting to do at the Calgary airport?

If it is the same airline, they should take care of it; unless otherwise noted.

For example, US airways transfers my bags for me; however, my friend got a note saying she had to pick them up and then check them back in for the connecting flight (stupid, I know).

Usually they check them through.

I recommend packing a change of clothes in your carry-on just in case (and maybe some toiletries - careful for liquids).

It might be worth paying to enter the Maple Leaf lounge ($30 I believe). Much more comfortable place to rest, some light food, and internet access.

A layover normally depicts an over night stay. You are just experiencing a change of flight or another leg of your trip
If you have booked through to Toronto and your baggage tags say Toronto when you board your first leg, then the bags will go through.
How long is your wait for the next flight? An hour? Several hours, a Whole day? All that makes a difference what you should do. If it is a long wait (over 4 hours) then maybe a lounge pass may be worth it? Anyrthing less, get something to eat, have a beer and read a paper and the time will pass fast.

If you're flying in one contiguous journey with a single airline, they should be able to check your bags through to your final destination. Double check when you first check-in to be sure.

+1 for packing a change of clothes and taking some basic toiletries, not only in case your luggage doesn't make it, but also for the journey itself. Nothing feels better than washing your face and brushing your teeth after flying for half a day.
