Wireless Internet Cuts Out

I recently switched my pc's internet to wireless and now my internet cuts out randomly. If I’m watching a video online it pauses for 10 seconds and comes back. Or I’m playing cod4 online and it stops working for 5-10 secs. I switched channels from 6 to 11 on the router and no difference.

I’m using a Dir-615 D-link router and TRENDnet TEW-421PC b1 Wireless. (<- ill double check that after.)

Any ideas why and how i can fix it?

Things to try: use channel one or eleven, avoid channel six if you're near other houses. Update the firmware and/or restore factory settings (goto this page in your router's config http://support.dlink.com/emulators/di614+_revB/tools_system.html for the restore option). On the advanced tab, under performance, use a short preamble and disable 4X mode.

That DI-614+ is pretty aincient these days and I would suggest replacing that; not only would something newer give you a more stable connection, it would also give you much better speeds.

some settings wont be availabel in the dlink routers. but these settings should stabilize your wifi.



Afterburner = AUTO
AP Isolation = DISABLED
Authentication Type = AUTO
Basic Rate = ALL
Beacon Interval = 50
CTS Protection Mode = DISABLED
Distance / ACK Timing = 0 (NOTE. only use this setting if wifi adapters are close by each other. such as a ps3 beside a pc. if 2 or more adapters are side by side consider playing around with this setting.)
DTIM Interval = 1 (NOTE. same as the above note)
Fragmentation Threshold = 2307 (this should always match your rts threshold)
Frame Burst = ENABLE
Maximum Clients = 10 (NOTE. this setting determines the maximum amount of wifi clients to be active on your network at one time. the general rule is take the amount of wifi clients in your home and multiply by 2)
Multicast Rate = AUTO
Preamble = SHORT
RTS Threshold = 2307 (leave this alone if you have no issues with the default setting. if you notice your connection drops in and out every so often change this to 2307 for more stability)
Receive Antenna = AUTO
Transmit Antenna = B
Transmit Power mW = 84 (NOTE. this setting controls how much power is amplified into the routers antenna's increasing the range. do not set this higher then 170 unless you have modded your routers cpu and added a heatsink and fan.)
Transmission Rate = AUTO (NOTE. this setting controls the rate of speed over lan between clients. use this at your discretion)
WMM = DISABLED
No ACK = DISABLED


also another note.

AVOID channels 1, 6 and 11. and never use channel 10.

these are the channels most ppl use normally because they are always the default channels for routers out of the box. if you have a cordless phone make sure your router is far away from the base station. and make sure you are on channels 2 to 5 or 7 to 9.

also try updating your wifi card drivers. i have personally owned that trendnet card you speak of and tossed it in the garbage after a few months.

Every router I've seen comes set to channel 6 (or auto mode if it has one) out of the box, and it's good practice to stick to channels 1,6,11 because they're the only non-overlapping channels available; if you use anything in between you'll get interference from neighbouring channels (eg if you use channel 3 you'll get interference from channels 1 thru 7).

well thank you for the replies. I re-updated the firmware to the latest and switched to channel 9. I have no idea what or where to change those settings so yeah. I'm going to wait, watch a video and see if it disconnects. :cheesygri

btw this is the router i got from the rogers free cable modem + router package.

if its the router i am thinking of the N router. i think its a belkin. its a good router. you can change the settings i gave you in the wireless advanced settings area. i would also suggest you you set your wireless transmission from b/g/n to g. unless your computer has a N adapter. G alone is more stable. and less work on the router since it would require less power and cpu processes.

And as for speeds rogers ultra-lite ain't going to get any faster with another router.

One other thing - check to make sure you have all the newest wireless drivers/windows updates on your local computer as well...
