FAQ

hi , I recently turned on an old PC ( HP D530, slim, low profile ) and found hard drive very noise. It's 3 years old PC so I am pretty sure it's IDE. What's the best(economic) way to make the PC take SATA hard drive ? BTW, any recomendation on HD in term of quiteness .
Thanks,

I did a quick google and the d530 should support sata. Probably SATA-1 (1.5gbit).

I'm currently using this:

You will also need one of these:

Can't go wrong with this setup for under $10 shipped.

I'll go for the PCI cards rather than IDE<>SATA adapters
Either the 4 ports Silicon Image or the 2 ports VIA

That's interesting...
Is there a limit to how many of those one can put in a computer?
I have 3 PCI slots free on my Asus p4c800-e deluxe, and I'd eventually like to turn this comp into a file server if I cant sell it for the price I want...
The case that I have supports enough like 12 drives so.... would 3 of these pci slots be fine to slap in the mobo in the future?

Should be ok, may need to free up some IRQs. But PCI is still limited to 133MB/s across all the bus.
2 drives reading at full speed can saturate your bus already
