High-end, High Resolution HP "Business" Laptops with Blu-Ray player. From the US ... The seller is in the US but ships to Canada. Refurbished with 1 year Warranties.

HP 8510w -- The first one: 15.4" screen. $849 USD. Around ten for sale. I called and there are 10 left even though the site says 5 at the time of posting.

HP 8710w -- The second one: 17" screen. $999 USD. Two left for sale. [EDIT: No Blu-ray on the 17"]

Both with 1920 x 1200 resolution. (WUXGA)

I bought the $849 USD machine in February. You'll get an email request to add $49 USD for shipping to Canada. The CAD on my Amex was $1079.60 plus $62.55 = $1142.15 total. (Bought through Google Checkout). The Custom/Tax Fees collected by UPS when it arrived at my front door was $127.50.

So the Grand total, all in, was $849 US => $1269.65 Can.

--------------------

Two glitches:

1. Upon initial booting into Windows XP, the automated installation of HP Specific Software was the last step of the initial setup process. But it would not complete and seemed to hang. Upon forced rebooting (by holding the power button down), the machine advanced to this last step, and this time it completed.

2. The WinDVD 8 software to play a Blu-Ray movie wanted to upgrade its credentials but the process would not work. I appied two patches from the HP website, after which the machine played the movie just fine. I got the patches for the 8510w From Here--See Software Multimedia (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=3355681&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=3369263&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=1093). Apply the 8.0.8.321 first, and then apply the 8.0.9.575 A patch.

All in all, everything seems to be working well. I am quite happy with the purchase.

--------------

Both machines comes with one memory stick, 2 GB of RAM. The other slot is empty. Memory is cheap, so you can easily add another 2GB for under $30.

Snap up the 17" one quick if you want it ... It's awesome! The specs are similar to the 15.4' but it has a few bumped-up specs ...

a 160GB 7200 rpm drive [vs 120GB 5400 rpm]
and faster CPU Intel Core 2 Duo T9500 / 2.6 GHz, 6GB L2 cache [vs Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 / 2.5 GHz, 4GB L2 cache]
and better discrete graphics card NVIDIA Quadro FX 1600M, 512 MB. [vs NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M TurboCache, 256 MB, support 512 MB].

Still, the 15.4" unit is impressive.

BTW, the specs on the seller's web page wrongly state that 4GB is the maximum--that's the case if you install another 2 GB stick. But I have doubly verified that the machine's maximum RAM is 8GB -- if you installed two 4GB sticks.

Cheers, and good luck!

Good price on the 17". That video card is definitely the best you will find in a $1000 laptop.

It doesn't say it has blue-ray..
New DELL's bought in Canada are for comparable price, about $1200 CAD + TAX.

Good observation! It looks like only the 15.4" has the Blu-ray!
Can you provide a link to the New DELLS?

I was looking at these:

Sign up for dell offers from dell.ca site... They often have sales...
On two different occasions, in the past couple of weeks I was able to configure a 17" laptop, with 320GB HDD (5400 though) with 3GB memory (vs 2GB on the hp), no blue ray , extra 1 year warranty, for $1200 CAD before taxes, free shipping.

Ahh, I didn't care for the video card, so if you need a good video card, it may be more expensive..
I cared for 17", large hdd, good warranty, 3+GB memory

Hi cynick,

The price is comparable until you upgrade the Display to Full HD or beyond (1920 x 1080). It's $300 to go from 1440x900 to 1920x1200 !! It's another $150 for Blu-ray, but to be fair the 17" HP also lacks Blu-ray.

I could find no other laptop anywhere near the price I paid for the 15.4" with a Blu-Ray player and could display Full HD.

The 2 GB RAM is a non-issue: The laptop has a 2GB stick and you can get another 2GB stick from your "local" computer store for $30.00. The more important issue is the Maximum possible RAM, and it supports 2 x 4 GB = 8 GB max.
For instance, see http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=703230

Not as easy to do as a memory upgrade, but it's not terribly difficult to upgrade the HDD on a laptop. In the past I used the tool from the HDD vendor's website (similar in style to the 'Norton Ghost' tool) to clone the data from an older laptop HDD to a larger newer one and it worked great. The HDD size on the 15.4" machine is a little smaller than I'd like [160GB], but I will upgrade that when the time comes.

For me the killer issues were the Blu-Ray and the Screen resolution--the parts that cannot be upgraded.

Can I post our exchange?

Sure, feel free to post it, it would definitely be helpful.
Hard drive update is not hard, I agree, plus the 17" should definitely have space for a second hard drive..
Oh, well.. I do want a new laptop, but with everyone telling me the economy is bad, I'll wait until I really need one..

I have a gray titanium HP Elitebook 8530p, it's awesome and is much sturdier and rugged then your average consumer line laptop. This cannot be compared to Dell Studio, HP Pavillion, Acer Aspire or other consummer class notebook. I really love mine.

However, I don't know about those refurbs. I bought mine brand new from ebay for around 1100CAD.

Also, the preloaded OSes are quite nice. There is no BS apps and bloatware installed. They also ask you which HP applications you want to install. It is pretty much the first laptop I have which I don't do a full clean OS re-install.

Also, it has an 8 cell battery which lasts around 4.5 hours with my P8600 CPU.

This laptop also has a TPM chip for those who wants extra security or business related functions. It also has the 3D Driveguard that protects the HDD from shocks while powered.

Don't forget that there will be brokerage and taxes to pay if you order these from the US.
