According to this page:

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/subclass.asp?catid=23795&mfr=&logon=&langid=EN&sort=0&page=2&list=

The 3.5" 1TB Seagate FreeAgent is $130, as well as the 2.5" 500GB. But when i clicked into each of them, there's no mention of the sale. Maybe they're updating the site?

EDIT: Looks like they're both up, thanks mrmccowcow

Pretty hot price if you PM with staples and use a $20 off $100 (instore/online) coupon (just got it in my email).

$129.99 - ( ($234.84 - $129.99) * .1) = $119.51
Apply the $20 coupon = $99.51 + tax.

I have 4 computers in the house with drives of 160 GB each...

Can I use this hard drive unit to create 4 partitions. Use a
backup program like Acronis True Image to set up different
configurations on each PC (one for a full backup and one for
incremental). Set it up so that each PC's configuration is set to
backup on their designated partition on the external hard drive?

That thing is hideous. lol

Set it up so that each PC's configuration is set to
backup on their designated partition on the external hard drive?

Yes you can but why would you want to have them on their designated partition? Since you're using Acronis, it creates images so why don't you just put them in folders? Wouldn't that be more efficient?

sure - that would work no problem. You wouldn't even have to partition it. Just create 4 shared directories. I would schedule all the backups at different times though, as if there is a large amount of data to back up it'll slow that external drive down considerably.

So which external is typically "superior", the MyBook or this one? Because Best Buy has the 1TB MyBook for $130 as well.

Probably the WD is the better choice. The Seagate drives used in these are the ones affected by the firmware issue and also lots of drives dying from physical failure. Alot are probably from overheating as they're hotter than other drives. Just be careful and keep them in a cool place if you decide to get the Seagate.

Someone's bound to ask so you can read some of the responses here:

Isn't the firmware issue only relevant if you boot with the drive ? I would use it as secondary storage.

Just think of it this way, the firmware issue is the part that you probably don't have to worry too much about as it can be updated. The drive physically dying from overheating is the part that would probably be worrying.

That's what I was leaning towards anyways. Plus, I like the look of the MyBook better ;)

Though I'm not too worried about the Seagate failing issues, now that they've come out with a firmware update. But it would be more than enough to turn me away from them for future purchases...Hmmm, I could buy a WD drive, put it in the computer and be done, or buy a Seagate drive and have to spend time updating the firmware yet...

The 20$ off 100$ is a coupon code you get in your email from signing up with Staples, and the coupon is only valid for one transaction.
Go here to see if anyone is giving away their code: http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=389024&highlight=staples+coupon

I just pm it in ottawa downtown staple just now ,the manager didn't give me 10% PM discount ,cause she said they don't PM more than $50 different price(it's $104.85 diff), but anyway they did give me $20 coupon discount. So the price after tax is $124.29 ,not bad deal ,and it's 5 years warranty. the price is 129.99 -20=109.99*1.13=124.29.

Up to you, but just to let you know, the irrecoverable failures are not due to firmware issues, but physical issues.

Bought 2 of them today as I needed some cheap storage for temporary files and mirroring. Disappointed to find no power switch, which is useful for when the drive is not in use. The AC adapter is also a bit large, making it awkward to use on a regular power bar. Other then that the rest seems fine for now.

Great price after PM + coupon! I love FreeAgents, but I'm being swayed by the negative reviews...

As for the lack of power switch, I have an older model of FreeAgent. These drives switch themselves off when you eject/unmount the device from your computer.

PM'd the 500GB drive in Kanata this afternoon. No coupon though :( It was the only one on the shelf.

Picked it over the WD at BB for the lower price, and better warranty. I've never had a issue with Seagates, so fingers crossed. FYI the drive inside is a Momentus 5400.6.

My PS3 seems to like it, and the enclosure seems to like the Seagate 5400.3 80GB PS3 drive. It takes more power I think, so I'll be getting a Y-cable asap.

I PM'd at staples plus coupon, $111.xx including tax, sweet! I printed out the store stock showing at futureshop as it's in stock at futureshop stores (although it's preorder on web), just be sure to include store stock when you print it out!

I swapped this drive into my Macbook, works perfectly! Easy to open, there's no tabs it's just a bunch of sticky stuff on the edges, just pry apart with a thin something (I used a nail) and it just was easy as peach. I swapped the old 160gb back into it, works well, closed like new. Also I disabled the LED light on top of the drive (just remove the jumper) as it's rather annoying -- I don't want people to know I have it connected and the LED shouts look at me I'm on!

How are people getting the $20 coupon for Staples?

Also looking at the increasing amount of failures people have had with this drive, whats convincing them to go ahead with it? Surely loosing 1TB of data is a 'big deal' for people.

Just came from Stooples and of course, was faced with the usual "not going to pricematch" even before they looked at the printouts. The pimple-faced geek working the cash said that they got an email this morning telling them that the 500GB 3.5"Seagate at FS wasnt the same as theirs. My reply was "I look forward to hearing your explanation as to how they are different... go ahead Socrates."

He called over the 5 foot tall Manager who looked up the FS website to compare the drives and LO AND BEHOLD, they are the same. The look of complete decimation on their faces was priceless. I felt like hopping the counter, getting in their grills and yelling "HOW YA LIKE THEM APPLES?!!"

After the geek rang in the drive for the 110% pricematch (which incidentally is not correct...they still managed to overcharge me $1.xx. I guess an office supply chain needs to get a better calculator!), I told him that I had a $20 off $100 coupon. THe kid almost had a coronary!!!

All in, the drive cost me $111 taxes in.

SUCK IT STOOPLES... I love when I get them to eat s*it with their pricing. I can't believe that they sell this drive for $230+... what kind of loser shops at Stooples and pays full price??

Mine is very quiet.

One a separate note, did your feet attach securely into the unit if you were to stand the unit up? Mine just clips into rather gently ... if you pick up and tap the foot ... it falls off.

SUCK IT STOOPLES... I love when I get them to eat s*it with their pricing. I can't believe that they sell this drive for $230+... what kind of loser shops at Stooples and pays full price??

which location was that? if possible, we should all go there to piss them off more! i hate it when those fools try to pull one from under ya!

I screwed up, I formatted the drive before making a backup of the files inside. Anyone know how I can recoup them?

He called over the 5 foot tall Manager who looked up the FS website to compare the drives and LO AND BEHOLD, they are the same. The look of complete decimation on their faces was priceless. I felt like hopping the counter, getting in their grills and yelling "HOW YA LIKE THEM APPLES?!!"

I usually have a similar experience at Stooples. The employees act like the discount comes out of their own pay or something. Some of them really get distressed, and I don't understand why they care so much. Do they get punished for following the corporate PM policy and accepting legitimate coupons?

Don't complain, their high prices make for good 110% price match opportunities. :)

Thanks OP...successfully PM'd the 1TB this afternoon. None on the shelf but the Stooples manager was nice enough to go in back and get me one. His face later said it all as he ok'd the PM. :) Using the $20 off email coupon made it that much nicer.

I picked up one of the 1TB drives from the Aurora Staples this evening. It was the last one on the shelf so I'm not sure if they have any left.

At the cash, my cashier and the computer section employee were discussing whether I could PM. I heard them saying they got an email about it but apparently it was regarding the Mybook drive from BestBuy. I guess people were trying to PM that one also.

I didn't have a $20 off coupon but I guess it was still a good deal. Thanks OP!

yeah I just asked a salesperson and they grabbed one from the back.

After it rung up I pulled out my print out and they PM'd it with no questions asked. The lady asked me if I wanted warranty with the huge savings.

I declined as Seagate has a killer 5 yr warranty.

Gonna go back and PM some of the 2.5" 500GB seagate drives for my 3 laptops.

Thanks OP. At NorthVan Staples, the manager's mumbled to the salesman that at these prices FS will go bankrupt soon.

He was later livid when he had to override the cashier and saw my printed $20 Staples coupon...

They did that to me once. However, I checked their price match policy here:
http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Static/static_pages.asp?pagename=help_policy_pricematch
it clearly states that " We will match it and give you 10% of the difference as a credit to your purchase (maximum $50 credit)!".

Basically it means that the maximum they can drop it after the price match is 50$ more, aka 10% of the difference can only be50$ max. In our case 10% of the difference is ~ 10$ so they can't refuse it. When it happened to me, I went back the next day and showed him a printed copy of the policy, and after 2 mins he refunded me 10% of the difference.

but she didn't give me PM 10% discount ,maybe because my english is not good ,discrimination.I got it for $124 all in.

What makes you think it's because of your english? I hate it when people automatically assume everything is because of their race or the way they speak.
A lot of managers don't know their own policies, it happens to everyone. Just because you got a different result than others doesn't mean there was any discrimination.
