Everybody needs toilet paper, but not everyone knows how to get the best deal on it.
There are several factors to consider:
1.) Quality
2.) Quantity
3.) Price
I guess number of ply could be another consideration, but I think the majority use 2-ply, so that'll be the basis here.
The first thing to consider when buying toilet paper is the quality. Do you like the ultra-premium super thick and absorbent paper like Charmin, or is the standard stuff like Royale adequate? Or is the cheapest of the cheap just fine for you? Obviously the better quality paper will cost a little bit more, so you'll need to take that into consideration.
The second thing to consider is quantity. The determining factor here is NOT the number of rolls you get in the package. It is the number of sheets you get per roll. It's not sufficient to just see that it's a "single roll" or a "double roll" because there is no set standard. Some single rolls are 100 sheets, some are 150 sheets, and some are 176 sheets. So for some brands, their double roll is only 200 sheets, which is almost the same as another brand's single roll!
And of course, the thing that most people pay attention to is price. What you should do determining the value of any toilet paper deal is to find out the number of sheets you get per dollar using the following formula:
(Number Rolls x Number of Sheets) / Price
Quick rough reference guide:
Premium toilet paper:
<400 sheets/dollar - Regular Price
~400 sheets/dollar - Regular Sale Price
~600 sheets/dollar - Good Sale Price
~800 sheets/dollar - Excellent Sale Price
>800 sheets/dollar - Incredible Sale Price
Standard toilet paper:
<600 sheets/dollar - Regular Price
~600 sheets/dollar - Regular Sale Price
~800 sheets/dollar - Good Sale Price
~1000 sheets/dollar - Excellent Sale Price
>1000 sheets/dollar - Incredible Sale Price

I was getting tired of doing the math all the time with the creative ads whenever there was a sale. I wondered, is it really a deal?
It was only a matter of time before an "Official" thread was made for toilet paper, lol.
Good job InvisibleSoul.
Thanks sent.

Another item to reference are the 36-roll packs of Scott that you can find at RCSS and Costco among other places.
The most remarkable feature of this brand is that they somehow cram 500 sheets into each individually wrapped roll that is the same size or smaller than other brand's double rolls. Obviously the quality isn't ultra-premium, but it's not terrible either. It's probably one notch lower than Royale and Cottonelle, but perfectly adequate for most.
Regular price for this is about $19...
36 rolls x 500 sheets / $19 = 947 sheets per dollar
Sometimes, but very rarely, it will go on for sale for under $17...
36 rolls x 500 sheets / $17 = 1059 sheets per dollar

Good stuff!
You might want to simply keep updating the opening post to display the best deals in each of the major metropolitan areas . . . much simpler than wading through an ever longer thread looking for the relevant posts.

I mean, I thought about that... but I'm not sure whether that would work.
For one, I will personally handle the GVR and nationwide deals every week, or as I come across them, so I can definitely update the first post with those... but I'm not sure I'd be able to handle keeping it up to date with deals specific to other regions.
Perhaps I could try...

Wait a minute. "Official", as in there have been several unofficial ones before it and this one needs to be deemed the "Official" one? Hmmm...
But seriously, this is a great idea and I agree with the member above that the deals on necessities like toothpaste and soap and so on could use their own sticky thread. Recession anyone?

I know, I know... I've always been weary of "official" threads myself...
But I was thinking if I called it official, people would now use this thread for all future toilet paper deals instead of creating new ones for individual deals. :)

Cost per sheet is pure madness!!!!!!! Albeit very thorough. Asia has 4-ply and my head exploded doing cost/ply for the whole aisle.
The rule of thumb my mom taught me is <$0.10/roll for rock bottom quality, $0.15-0.20/roll for average (i.e. royale), $<0.30/roll for premium

But what if there are two brands that have the same number of rolls for the same price, but one brand of has only 200 sheets per roll, but the other has 352 sheets?
If you just go by price per roll, both brands come out to be the same... but in reality, you get 76% more toilet paper for the second brand!
Edit: Just to further emphasize on the point, it doesn't even have to be different brands.
For example, take Cottonelle. Say you go to the store, and all of the 12-packs are the same price:
http://i44.tinypic.com/rsvhn6.jpg http://i42.tinypic.com/30net82.jpg http://i41.tinypic.com/33ek006.jpg
I guess it doesn't matter which one you buy, right?
Wrong!
The regular blue one has 352 sheets per roll. The aloe green one has 260 sheets per roll. The thicker purple one has only 200 sheets per roll.
Obviously there are differences between those three products, but if you're just looking for the most toilet paper for your dollar, it would not be sufficient to just determine the price per roll.

For this deal:
12 rolls x 300 sheets / $4 = 900 sheets per dollar
It's an excellent deal. With the $1 off save.ca coupon, it becomes:
12 rolls x 300 sheets / $3 = 1200 sheets per dollar
That's the lowest price I've come across in the last few months since I've been keeping an eye on toilet paper prices.
I went an extra step.. pricematched at Zellers to get it to $4, got another 10% off for SPC, then applied coupon.. $2.60 per pack.

I guess this would be considered crapping on the thread, but take a read of this article (http://www.alternet.org/environment/129351/america's_love_affair_with_really_soft_toilet_pape r_is_causing_an_environmental_catastrophe/?comments=view&cID=1148668&pID=1148332) i stumbled upon.
"The tenderness of the delicate American buttock is causing more environmental devastation than the country's love of gas-guzzling cars, fast food or McMansions, according to green campaigners. At fault, they say, is the US public's insistence on extra-soft, quilted and multi-ply products when they use the bathroom."

Funny thing, I found this thread on RFD soon after reading this article.

I think we should add Facial Tissue (Kleenex) to this thread too. Similar challenges to the TP :). How many tissues per box, ply, brand quality etc.
My personal fav is Life Brand at Shoppers which goes on sale for $0.59/box regularly (0.49 if you are lucky); specs are 132 sheets/box @ 2 ply, quality is mid-range.
Anyone got any secret non-sale price sources for this stuff? And yes yes.....I know I could just use TP if I was REALLY cheap :P.

Reading this thread reminds me of my backpacking days in Central Africa, Eastern Europe, and especially Asia. Never shake hands or touch the left hand of the locals, and only eat food with the right hand if there were no cutlery. I recall paying two bucks a roll, and I would leave my leftover rolls of TP with the locals and they were so bewildered but we all got a good laugh about it. It started more laughs, rather than leaving little candies or the little Canada flag pins.
I never bothered about the cost of TP ever again. But, any little bit of savings help, and they add up to a few bucks with each package, so thank you OP for starting this thread (and bringing back some fond memories!)

Exactly. The Kirkland brand is about 23$, but its great quality. Very Soft. Lasts forever. The Scott ones that are 20$ can get a little rough if you have eaten something that makes you sick. Go with the Kirkland. Especially when it goes on sale for 19$

That's not the case here at the Vancouver Wal-Mart... it's just a flat $4 with no coupons. It may be because this location has stock problems for the advertised Royale... so they put this on for the same price? Not sure...
I went back there tonight to return a few items, and not surprisingly the whole skid was gone.
BUT... I just realized one important detail... this blue Cottonelle package is actually 1-ply! I didn't think there would be 1-ply Cottonelle... =(

For the Vancouver folks who are going to Wal-Mart, they don't have any of the advertised 12-double or 24-single Royale available.
However, I was at the customer service counter, and they had a hand written note there that said they would allow customers to buy a 24-double Royale pack for $8 (equivalent value to the 12-double for $4), limit one.
So... you can check to see if they have any of those, and take it to the customer service counter.

There is no more Scott bathroom tissue paper as the ten-year licensing and trademark agreement for the Scott Paper, Cottonelle and ScotTowels trademark names expire in June 2007. Now it is called Soft & Pure® Premium™ Bathroom tissue. The Soft & Pure Premium paper is getting thinner and thinner and the 2-ply is almost as thin as the 1-ply, so it won't take you long to finish 500 sheets.
Was Kruger Products formerly known as Scott Paper?
Yes. In 1997, our parent company, Kruger Inc., purchased the assets of Scott Paper from Kimberly-Clark. The purchase included a ten-year licensing and trademark agreement for the Scott Paper, Cottonelle and ScotTowels trademark names that expires in June 2007. So we knew that we would ultimately have to change our name and, in 2004, began the process of doing so. Our new name was announced in October 2006 and completed a major, three-year rebranding initiative that created an entirely new and all-Canadian banner - Kruger Products - for several of Canada's most successful, best-selling tissue brands.

Hell, might as well just steal a whole roll once a week instead of a few squares everyday... :D

The Vancouver Wal-Mart doesn't have enough stock to satisfy their shopper base. To get the good deals, you really have to go the same day that the sales start, which is usually on Friday, I believe.
It also really helps to shop in the morning too... like the Cottonelle stuff, they had a whole skid in the morning when they opened. I got there probably about 10:30am, and probably quite a few bundles were gone already... and I happened to go back there again after 6pm that night and the skid was empty.

I use the Ultra Cottonelle. I do like it.
however, I found the manufacturer keep narrowing width of the toilet paper. when it is in the toilet paper holder, you could see a 1.5 inch gap in width.
10 years ago there would be 0.5 inch gap. Not good for big hands.
Next year the manufacturer would have even smaller squares, and you will use more.

Wikipedia mentioned that the average American uses an average of 23.6 rolls per capita a year. Or one roll every two weeks... ? strange, you would think eating 2-3 meals a day would result in 1 or 2 dumps... ~3 wads (each wad 6-10 sheets) would be far more than this average... but perhaps Canadians are more bathroom abusive?
The key note: If we can make machines to find pits in disks at a microscopic level.. you would think Detroit could come with a better machine that could automated finding the 'big' pit and with custom memories and a rapid jet, reduce the Klingons to the last.

The comparison is sheets per roll.... but, is the term "sheet" a standard industry measure?
What if company 1 has "sheets" that are 1cm shorter than company 2's "sheet"?
You might get more sheets, but less total paper?

LoL... a valid point... I can't be certain, but it seems most toilet paper squares are the same size... but even if they're not, the difference is not noticeable enough to influence a change in the number of sheets used per wipe, so the net usage remains the same.

Maybe.. maybe not. TP is serious business.
Maybe Company X is cutting costs is these harsh economic times, but they can't lose the "number of sheets per roll" game to their competitor, so they just make their sheets smaller.
That's the cutthroat TP business! Sucker consumers will use more sheets each time and not even notice.
But, smart shoppers do the comparison.
For the record, Costco Kirkland sheets are 10.16cm x 11.43cm according to the package (they measure to 10.2x11.6)

Royale, Cashmere and Life Brand sheets are all 9.9 x 10.1 cm
InvisibleSoul
Mar 3rd, 2009, 11:48 PM
I just checked and Cottonelle and some Cascades brand from Canadian Tire are also 9.9cm x 10.1cm.
So it looks like that's the standard... but Kirkland is the exception.
Most brands: 9.9cm x 10.1cm = 99.99cm²
Kirkland: 10.2cm x 11.6cm = 118.32cm²
You get approximately 18% more area for Kirkland per sheet...
But yeah... I'm not going to bother going that far.

Hmm... I'm not sure... what percentage of people do you think take this into consideration? If i would venture guessing, i'd say
1 in 5 would consider it important
1 in 5 would consider it unimportant
3 in 5 would consider it positively if theirs a 'good value' in that deal
i.e. if it would be 500-600 shp (sheets per dollar) and reasonable quality, a majority will consider it and a substantial number would jump on it.
This is all personal extrapolation, regardless, i think its important to add a green dimension to this and other consumerables as its likely to be a new layer to economic activity in the near future.
Another issue is most brands don't give any information like that... so it would just be a few selected products that this would even apply to...Some brands give minor information but thats not very helpful for us. Like you said there are green options out there that we can find in Loblaws stores (PC brand), Metro stores, even Costco.
I don't want to complicate your thread, i really like how simply you've presented the dimensions, adding a 3rd green one however, would just make it even better. And i also like how we're brainstorming here.

It's basically exactly the same as what Wal-Mart had last week, when they had the 12 double rolls for $4.97... so it's a decent deal, but since it's a one day sale and you have to buy a huge 36 double roll pack, I didn't feel too inclined to bother including it on the front page.

$9.99 for 24 Double rolls, Western Family Bathroon Tissue.

the fight for the best toilet paper deal to wipe thy dirty arses with white magic! lol..
thread still hilarious yet.... useful!!
oh yah side deal. i heard on the local radio of a product that would compliment the toilet paper thread.
its called " Poop-eri " what it does is that its like fragrance when you go to your daily meeting with the toilet. you spray what is like a foam-like substance and it foams up in the toilet ( i guess it forms like shaving cream foam) and after you finished your meeting, and flush the foam acts like anti-odor so it doesnt smell.
thought it was funny and yet useful like this toilet paper thread..

12 double 300 = 810 sheets/$
Plus, I don't see any coupons for it anymore, on save.ca.

The MTF Price Matters stores in B.C. always have good deals on recycled toilet paper. As many of you may know, it's not uncommon to pay a premium for TP made from 100% recycled paper. But -- or maybe I should say "butt" -- my personal feeling is that we should all use recycled paper for toilet paper. Just my personal feeling, I'm not admonishing anyone. So we always paid a bit more for the 100% recycled. Then the MTF came to town and has saved us with great TP deals. A few weeks ago week bought:
SoftCloud brand (from China) 12 rolls @ 500 sheets per roll for $3.98. I believe that's 1,511 sheets per dollar.
This is pretty-much standard for the MTF. Chinese brand 100% recycled toilet paper with 12 rolls @ 500 sheets per roll for somewhere between $3.98-$5.98 per pack depending on the week.

I was at RCSS (Langford) today and there were ~10 skids of 24 double roll Royal toilet paper for 7.98!
Yep, they had it at the Grandview Hwy location in Vancouver as well. It seems to be an unadvertised special. I already have it on the first post...

What I really like about Scott is that they are individually wrapped as you won't be using all 36 or whatever quantity other brands offer at the same time, each roll is clean and hygenic when you put it onto the rack

What's the optimum cents per roll for each brand of toilet paper? Obviously the better stuff will cost more but I'd like to know the range to stay in or beat. Much appreciated.
So jokes. Don't quote this part.

Do you guys take points into consideration when rating how hot of a deal it is? I think the deal tomorrow for Royale 12 double roll for $4.77 with $1 save.ca coupon AND 20x the points at Shoppers is a hot deal. You get enough points for $2.93 for a plus member and $2.54 for a regular member on bonus redeemption or $2.20/$1.91 for regular redeemption.

I can see how this could be a consideration, but it's beyond the scope of this thread. I had never really looked into SDM points before, and I realize now that the 20x bonus is actually quite appealing. It's basically getting about 30% off anything with a $50 purchase...

If it's the same quality as the package I bought, then I would say the quality is quite poor. Even though it's 2-ply, it feels significantly thinner than the Cottonelle 1-ply. This is the worst toilet paper I've ever purchased. I only use it to clean up my dog's messes now, not my own...
I'd give it 1/5 on my rating scale.
Even though it's 1036 sheets per dollar, at most I could rate this deal is 4/5.

How boring a life you must have to count the number of sheets on a roll of toilet paper.
Seriously.
There's only about 3 or 4 big name brands and I just buy the one that's on sale - usually around $4.99 or less for 24 rolls.
Ghetto_Child
Apr 24th, 2009, 05:36 PM
gordholio that's exactly what the big name brands want you to do. Think about it, all toilet paper is made of recycled paper because it's cheaper for manufacturers to buy recycled than to create brand new paper. How many paper recycling companies do you think are in north america? I bet a small handful. Now with so few options for the main ingredient and so many brands of paper what justifies the wide range of prices you see on these packs? Oh that's right the brand's price inflation & marketting costs for their own pocket.
You still really think it's wise to just pay what manufacturers ask you to pay? BTW it takes seconds to count the number of sheets per dollar. It makes a big difference how many sheets you're getting when you're a family (3 individuals or more). So how much time does it take to put # of rolls x # of sheets per roll / tag price per package into a calculator? Seconds, you're telling me you're life is too important/busy to spend a few seconds that will save you a couple dollars? How many people on RFD are making a couple dollars per second anyway? You'd have to be something like a regional director or some other exec to make a couple dollars per second regularly.
Yeah gordholio have fun tending to your demanding lifestyle it must be making you a couple dollars per second since it's too costly for you to put a few seconds on breaking down TP costs.
Oh even worse, you actually thought it was a productive use of your time to insult people breaking down TP costs lol who's the real "no-lifer" now hunh?

It's close to charmin softness but there is a noticeable difference. I find it softer than Royale regular. I think it's quality is 3 or 4/5. Definately not as durable as charmin, I don't know of any TP more durable than charmin, charmin feels like there's elastic in it  (recycled condom particles maybe? )
I will forever miss when this President's Choice Super Soft came in packs of 30 jumbo rolls 330 sheets per roll reg. price $12.99 which worked out to 761 sheets per dollar.

Whatever. As long as the price is reasonable, I buy it.
Doesn't matter if it's a tiny fraction more expensive.
People only have so much time during the day. I would gather that a very small minority counts toilet paper sheets.
The first time that I ever heard of people actually counting toilet paper sheets was on RFD. It never occurred to me that anyone would do that - except maybe 60 year old women.

Odd comment. Why wouldn't people, regardless of their age or gender, take note of how much product they're getting for their mone...
Ah, ok, I get it. I think you misunderstood...
To set you straight: the manufacturers typically print the number of sheets per roll on the package. So it's a very straightforward calculation to get the number of sheets per dollar. Takes no time at all. A lot less than it took to write your post.
People are not- as you seem to suppose- actually unspooling the roll and counting the sheets individually, one at a time. You're right, though. If people WERE doing that, it would be very weird indeed ;-)

If we did that we'd surely discover that the sheets they give us is sometimes or maybe a lot of the time less than advertised. I mean from the manufacturer's point of view "who's gonna know?"
You must need to use a lot more toilet paper doing that...
not really, just don't put a lot of water to make it fall apart. Damp or moist not soaking wet. It's cleaner too because you won't leave any pasty film behind. Sorry for getting so detailed :o :cheesygri
The first time that I ever heard of people with 9200 posts on the internet is on RFD. It never occurred to me that anyone would have the time to do that -- except maybe 60 year old women .. with 60 cats. ;)
 I can't believe I didn't notice that. Even worse he thought it was more productive to spend time typing 2 posts putting down counting what you paid for rather than looking for a fast way to count it.
Thanks lane99 I didn't realize before that's how he was looking at it.

Over the top...? or right on the money! You got me thinking...
That could seriously save some single moms a lot of money. They buy TP for themselves anyway, why buy baby wipes when they could just wet regular TP! Brilliant! I have to tell all the ladies I know who are expecting about this hot tip.

I never said that people are unspooling the rolls. I know the compaines print the number of sheets on the package.
I'm just not going to get out a calculator and be concerned about a few cents here and there.
I guess some people take this toilet paper hunting very seriously though.
I'm not picky like that. As long as it's pretty reasonable based on my experience of seeing prices, then I buy it.
I am careful though to look in the flyers to see what is the best deal at the time.
Generally speaking if you get 24 regular rolls for $5.99, that's not bad. But if you can get them for $4.99 or less, you're doing well.
It doesn't matter to me if I might overspend by 50 cents per month on a package of toilet paper. A few sheets here and there difference is not really my concern. :)
I apologize for comparing you guys to 60 year old women though.

Zellers Has Purex Enviro Care 'triple roll' 8 packs on for $5.97 a pack.
420 sheets per roll / 8 rolls per package so 3360/5.97 = 562 sheets per $1.00
If you buy 13 packages today (Saturday May 30)- you could combine this with their buy $75 of product and get $20 gift card deal.
That would raise the sheet per dollar number to 758.

This whole toilet paper tread is a monumental waste of time fellow RFD'ers! I think no one will deny that you can never have as clean a puckered anus as you have after washing the crack of your bum in the shower with water. Save yourselves time, money and have a clean bum forever by buying a bidet attachment. I got one and have never bought a single roll of toilet paper again. I got hooked on a bidet attachment after visiting Japan, and once you get one you won't believe how obsolete and useless toilet paper is! Nothing cleans your bum like a strong spray of water. Go to the link below, choose the good, better or best model and never buy toilet paper again. Just think of all the $$$ you'll save in the long run, and save some trees while you're at it! It will change your life, trust me! Hopefully you will look forward to using it every day like I do!

I just get up and go no need to dry my ass, i kinda like the clean wet feeling knowing that no excrement is lingering around. You could keep some toilet paper handy for drying though, you'll notice it will come away clean, no racing stripes in site anymore! You don't need it though, just shake your booty to get rid of most of the water like i do and you're good to go! The water does not go up your ass, it goes on it, blasting away any residue. You can control the intensity of the spray from a little trickle to water cannon. It shoots about 10 feet out of the toilet if you put it full blast!

So there's this vision that following a hard night of partying with my buddies, during the middle of the night I crawl out of my spinning bed and stagger to the can and while attempting to hit the toilet in the dark, take a full stream of water straight in the face.
As I fall backward, flailing helplessly at the steady stream while spitting out what already hit me in the face and mouth, wondering who in the hell is pissing on me, the light suddenly comes on ........ and there's the missus ....... who with a sly smirk on her face says "Payback's a bi!ch! ...... next time lift up the toilet seat!"
And I silently swear to myself to never touch shooters again.:D

Actually, from a purely economic POV, one-ply is a better value than two-ply, all else being equal. I was in a job many moons ago and was responsible for janitorial operations. Speaking with a Kimberley-Clark rep, they had studies that, because people don't actually use double with one-ply (say, 60% more), there were material cost savings to be had from going one-ply. I switched.....but senior management wasn't happy and made me switch back.
NB: I'm leaving the whole quality/comfort issues out of this part of the discussion.

There was a Cashmere $10 rebate coupon for toilet paper in my local newspaper Sat 22 Aug.
You might want to be on the lookout for it. The add I saw was 1/2 a page in size.
Google shows it was in a few newspapers on Saturday.
Got this off another deals website:

Admissable products include any two additional selections of either Cashmere 24 single roll, 12 double roll or lager, Sponge Towels 6 roll or larger and Scotties 6 pack or larger.
To receive your $10 Mail-in rebeate cheque, complete the claim form and mail together with the original dated cash register sales receipt (sales receipt must be dated between August 22, 2009 to September 5, 2009) with admissable products circled. Rebate requests must be received by September 26, 2009. Open to residents of Canada only. Limit one coupon per purchase. Limit of one rebate per name, address or household. I bought it for $6.99 this Tuesday. Receipt seems to suggest regular price is $7.77.
Either way, that's just about the sweet spot of 1000 sheets per dollar.
Quality is mediocre. But good enough, I'd say.

CT's got charmin 12 roll 2ply for $4.97 on the front page. I think that's hot. I only use 2 pieces per swipe with the charmin extra strong, which has the 12 roll equal to 24.

No Frills has (had) Cashmere for $399 for 30 rolls. Today's the last day.
Now put down that catalogue and high-tail it to NF. :)

I thought there was only one "role" for toilet paper? :D
