Anyone tried these disks? Are they anything like their DL counterparts? Which manufacturer? If they are, I wouldn't touch them, even though at this price it's probably the lowest I've seen...

I went to BB and found out those discs are MIT so I didn't pull the trigger.

Still pretty expensive but we are getting closer.
$1 a disk is my threshold. Going to be another year or two before we get there.
What is the pricing on 50GB discs like? That's what is really needed for movie backups...

Not necessarily true for all cases. The departed and Saw 4 got great reviews for picture quality, they are 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 and 1080p/VC-1 encodes respectively. I think the extras are shot in 480p, so that can explain why it's less size.

haven't seen 50GB lately, are they out?...
i doubt BD-R would go for $1 in 2 years, DL are like $1-1.5 each, only if the bluray writer goes down in prices to like a dvd rw :D

I picked up a couple boxes of these for ~$24 a while back and they work great........ I'm not sure what you are saying is bad about the dual layer discs though

:|
you can barely get a dual layer DVD for $1/disc
it will be a LONG time before blu-rays hit that price.
best price I've seen on dual layer media is $19.99/disc for BD

The 50GB discs are available in many stores in Canada. You need to either order them off the internet (and get your eyes gouged out on shipping) or pick them up a Fry's in the USA.

I think these were selling for $20 during boxing week. However, that's the lowest I saw and it happened only once. $30 is still good price.

I think the proximity of the 'J' key to the 'U' key may have something to do with it.

they were sold out on boxing day sale for $20 online and most stores.. could have PM with staples online. I thought $30 was regular price for these at BB.
Blah, I'll wait for 50GB to go down in price since HD memory is cheaper right now. Too much trouble fitting movies on 25GB

It says Made in USA, just like the other ones says Made in Japan, but everyone abbreviates it MIJ on the forums.

Really? last time I remember this deal was long before fall of 08... FS don't even carry any bd-rw drives anymore, and bestbuy has them for around $290.

The ones in bold have received good reviews as far as PQ goes. The Island in particular is probably one of the best blu-ray releases I've seen (not released in NA). But yeah, more and more BR releases will probably be put on DL discs.
Except the ones with good PQ usually don't.
