Looking for a laptop for simply downloading music, surfing the web, and for uploading pics from my digital camera for under $500.
I came across this laptop under the Refurbished section and only has a 90 day warranty.

i've owned two compaqs over the years and absolutely hate them, always have problems with them and find they don't run as well as other brands...to each there own I guess, I have a gateway laptop and despite the negative opinions, i love mine

A worker purchased one from an online outfit and it came defective. Costed him shipping to ship it back for a refund.

I'm using mine right now to surf this
Its a CQ-50.
It has issues with power managment. I updated it and every way possible and it keeps screwing up on the power stuff
i.e. once you run low on battery power it disables the wireless nic to save power, only way to get it to turn back on is to power off and pull the battery to really reset it.
the suspend to disk does not work right either, its supposed to do hybrid sleep (both suspend and hibernate). It is close the lip and unplug it it goes to sleep and then kills the battery and crashes. It only once and while worked right. ususally it booted up from scratch. so I changed every mode to hibernate only. better
key board layout kinda sucks, i'm always hitting the wrong keys while typing
battery life sucks
I paid $500 Sept 08 (new)

I have this exact same laptop (C770US).
I like it so far. It's been problem-free since I bought it around XMAS.
At that time for $469 I got the laptop, laptop bag, wireless microsoft mouse and Kaspersky IS 2009.
I think it was a good deal for a basic machine. Note that the 2GB RAM is not upgradeable and the battery life is approx. 2hrs. I use it mainly for surfing and Remote Desktop-ing into my Media Server and Download PCs.
I haven't yet experienced any power management issues.
Cheers

one brand of laptop I did have problems with is Toshiba. My last laptop ended up being sold for parts because the pin where the power cord plugs into the back of the laptop broke off.
Only after just over a year and out of warranty it was useless, and the only way you could repair it was changing the motherboard... so i was told.

I bought a Compaq V6000 notebook two years ago and the whole thing fell apart within a year!
The paint started coming off. Most of the ports, including the power connector are all loose. Even the battery failed within the first 8 months. When I called HP, they blamed it on "normal" wear and tear. At least they sent me a replacement battery and that failed within a year.
I've owned all sorts of other notebooks: Toshiba, Acer, Apple, and I've never had a product fall apart like this.
I still haven't decided what to replace it with but it certainly won't be a Compaq or HP!
