Walmart Barrhaven- 8 in stock.
20 inch NEXT Cyclone mountain bike, aluminum frame, front suspension. $50.

I forgot to check how many speeds it has, but the shifters are on the handlebar grips.

I know its not a "good" bike, but for $50, hard to pass up for kids, or something to ride around town with no worries that it would get stolen.

That's an understatement.

Although for $50 you could ghost ride it into oncoming traffic.

$50 for an aluminum frame? Sounds hot to me. Why is everyone so down on this?

For $50 that's a steal. You could easily flip these for $100 on Craigslist.

Great basic transportation, kids bike, simple bike for exercise, whatever. You can't go wrong for $50.

And this is coming from a guy that has spent $50 on two titanium bolts for my bike. ;)

ok? got it? nope, no brain left??

its a piece of **** bike that will get you from A to B for a while, then the chain will snap and your tires will pop and the gears and brakes won't work anymore. get it? got it? good.

Low-end bikes, like any other low-end products, cut corners.

Screws are replaced with hair thin pins, frames sometimes aren't made properly, parts that should be stainless steel...aren't. It's the nature of the market. To make it worse, this bike has a front suspension fork. 95% sure that the front fork is just going to be an elastomer polymer shoved in a tube with no spring to support it. Thus, after a few months of riding.. It's going to sag and completely throw off the geometry of the bike.

If you rarely ride a bike.. Or, need a bike for the winter riding with REALLY salty roads.. Get it. It's a throw away bike, and while it might last you for a few years.. Most likely, it won't. I put upwards of 5000km a year on my bike since it's my main source of transit and I do annual touring on it. For a person like me, the bike in question wouldn't last a week. But, that's why I spent considerably more.

Even some low end bikes use regular manufacturers brakes, gears, etc... so it may last longer than some people think. Like the last poster said, for someone who rides all the time, of course, it's not going to suit them... and that is why they spend upwards of 100X as much on their bikes... which, yes, still fail sometimes... but not as soon as something like this one. Regardless, still a great deal... considering every retailer now has their own brand of bike, with shimano parts, etc etc... and they are still considerably more than this.

a)Buy it, ride it. If it's all that bad return it to WM before the 90 days are up. b)Most bike parts are universal, the parts on this bike are easily worth more than $50.

AlexV
Feb 15th, 2009, 10:14 AM
I agree that this is a good deal, however saying that all bikes are universal is a bit of a misnomer. Shimano makes some incredibly good parts, and some incredibly terrible ones (and everything in between).

I think what he means by the parts being universal is that if one part breaks, it's very easy to find a replacement part.

You know what, I just don't go for that BS. I grew up with really inexpensive bikes from Sears and Woolco etc. I trashed them, jump them off of cliffs into trees, rode them into the ocean etc. They lasted a couple of years from that kind of abuse just fine, sure, I would blow a chain here and there, pop a tire but that will happen on any bike. Are you trying to tell me that my Sram PC-991 Hollow Pin chain on my latest hand-built 29er won't snap because I spent $70 on it? I progressed through better bikes in my teens and I stilled broke stuff, the bikes just got lighter, shifted more accurately and the braking improved. I didn't mean that stuff wouldn't break through.

This bike is absolutely perfect for its intended audience, kids, recreational cyclists etc. Of course a hardcore cyclist wouldn't buy something like this..

Think outside the box and your own little world. ;)

actually saw this at our Local Walmart, I wouldn't even pay $25 for this piece of -----. I can see screws falling off or snapping, the chain breaking and so on. I would really be worried going 10 mph on a downhill. This bike is a serious injury waiting to happen when a wheel or chain gives out. The saying....you pay for what you get...really lives up to it on this bike. Pay and extra $50 and get something reliable and safe.

I was just thinking the same thing, that because it is only $50, it is worthless, but $50 more puts you into a different price point together, and $100 buys you a quality bike these days???

I dont know, but i find that the bikes in store are one way or another assembled bad by the people who work there, there are times were i see parts that are loose, reflectors mounted backwards and so on...lol
I worked at CT years ago, and our store, hired a guy who did nothing but build bikes for us. When they came in, he would come into the warehouse, for a day, and build as many bikes as he could and he was thorough... I bet his first few, were rough, but when he built them after he got familiar, the brakes never rubbed, the shifters were spot on... all was well done!

Once again I am saying, save you $50 and spend $50 more and get something safe and reliable. You pay for what you get. This bike is not worth the $50 it's on sale for. Even at $50 I would say Walmart is still making money

It was originally $100, so if your math is used, by saving my $50 on this bike, spending an extra $50, which would mean spending $100, I can buy a bike similar to this, which was it's regular price, your logic makes no sense. Supercycle (CT) is probably made by the same company, as are some CCM bikes... BTW, Raleigh, which used to be a "BRAND NAME" in bikes, at least good or very good "casual" use bikes, has gone downhill in the last few years, being sold at retail stores along side these types of bikes, using the same components as these bikes, but charging more, because of their name...
Secondly, have you seen one of these bikes, have you even ridden one? How do you know how safe and reliable it is? I am sure that hardly anyone in this thread rode one of these bikes or even took a second look at it before the OP put it on here, and yet a lot of people have opinions on the quality of it. Not that I am interested in one, but if someone has ridden one, has owend one, it would be nice to hear their side of things.

and got one. They only had one left. $50, how can you go wrong?

I got it home and took a ride around the block... It didn't shatter into pieces! I am still alive! ;)

It has a light aluminum frame, aluminum alloy wheels (XRIMS), and decent brakes. It handles great and is very well balanced, I was able to ride it with no hands very easily. It has Shimano gears with RevoShift shifters. The bike does not feel like a cheap $100 bike from years past that weighed a ton. And yes, it is made in Canada.

I am going to check other Wal-Marts tomorrow to see if they have more at other locations, and in other colours. (The ones here were all green) I want to get another one.

$50 is a great price, it should be fine for the average person using it as transportation, as long you dont take it off jumps or anything you should be fine. But i will never go back to supercycle bikes...lol...i've spent more on parts and repair than the bike itself, but i ride it pretty rough...

If anyone is interested, there are 2 of the green bikes the op took a picture of at the Walmart in Winnipeg -- Kenaston and McGillvery location.

I picked up a red one for $70 for my son, it has dual suspension and will make him a very happy boy in March for his birthday present.

Thanks OP !!

Capilano Mall north vancouver had at least 5 of these sitting at the mall entrance, $50 sticker clearly on them- Seriously, if I hadn't just bought a bike (a REAL bike, lol), I'd be tempted to get this- just to bnum around with during summer.

Just in case anyone in the lower mainland is interested...
