OK, I mentioned in another thread and I think it is worth to start a new thread for it (hope it is not a waste of space).

I received the email from NCIX for pre-order Asus EEE 1000HE, which is the newer model with 9.5h battery life. The price is $450, I believe the price includes a pre-order discount promotion by Asus, with free shipping when you buy $10 GC and saving of 8% PST for Ontario residents, I think it is a pretty good deal consider old versions sells for more than this. Also you can buya free printer (after MIR of course) with it as well.

Free printer after MIR (you can see the detail from the Asus EEE link)
Edit: the MIR form from Asus EEE link seems to be faulty (rebate time is wrong), the MIR link from the following seems to be right.
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=32697&vpn=X2470&manufacture=Lexmark&promoid=1001

PS: according to several users' post, you can price match directcanada at NCIX to save a few more bucks, but I am unsure whether you can get the free printer after MIR and do the price match at the same time (check post #14 for links from directcanada).

Update March 31: deleted free printer and free shipping with GC purchase from the title, watch NCIX's weekly sale as they occasionally bring back free shipping with GC purchase, directcanada has free shipping all the time.

wonder if this is the one with the newer N280 processor.. which uses the faster FSB compared with the N270..

although the processor speed isn't really much faster.. 1.66 vs 1.60.. the fsb should make a slight difference in speed.

too bad the site is rather vague on details.

SO it costs the same from the US @ 450 but you save $25 dollars in GST....

How much do you think you spend in Gas and time to get down there though, plus you have no warranty through the retailer, and chances are you have no warranty through Asus in Canada either, they have their CA and US versions most likely.

Definitely not worth the savings buying it from the U.S.

Since NCIX is a sponsor of RFD, can I assume it's a good reputable company? Has anybody got any bad experience with them?

I am debating if I should order it with NCIX or buy it at Infonec that is right behind my house.. NCIX would save me the PST, but I would have to wait for the shipping where as Infonec, I can just pick it up..

But the gift card isn't really free, right? You still have to pay $10. Although you get free shipping with it, you'd automatically get free shipping with orders over $300 at DC. If know you will make more orders with NCIX, then obviously it's better to get this from them. However, if you're unsure, then you would save more money by ordering directly from DC.

NCIX Shipping Insurance is $13.80? The actual CP cost is about 3 dollars. The shipping insurance actually as high as the cost of shipping. That's pretty laughable.

Considering it's mandatory, it's even more dishonest than the FS/NCIX style of hiking up prices before a sale and pretty much constitutes fraud.

edit: Nevermind, it's not mandatory. This is just the normal "insurance" "warranty" addon you always see from these retailers. Adding shipping "insurance" is a good way of price disciminating, exactly like FS PSP. The profits from this are greater than from the entire item.

but looks like u can't order it from DC at the moment(shows not available), but NCIX may still PM since they r under the same umbrella company, even if they don't, NCIX price is still low.

Too bad we can't order from DC yet. It'd be good to know how much they charge for insurance for comparison. How long does the pricematch process usually take at NCIX? Does the order automatically go through even if PM is unsuccessful?

IME, usually w/i 24 hrs

if they don't approve of the PM, they'll send you an email regarding the PM details and reason(s) as to why it wasn't accepted, and usually along w/ the lowest price they can offer

i think you need to reply w/i 2-3 days telling them what you'd like to do

I don't think you are quite unfamiliar with how shipping with couriers works.
NCIX provides $100 in insurance on ALL packages, and all packages receive a tracking number.
Through Canada Post, a tracking number ALONE costs $7 with $100 insurance.

I don't do my shipping through UPS or Fedex, but Purolator charges 3.25% of the declared value for liability insurance. So getting extra insurance at 1.5% is half the ACTUAL cost, and buying the Express Coverage for 1.5% extra for the expedited service and peace of mind - Not to mention you are still paying less than what insurance normally costs.

rahzel
Feb 16th, 2009, 12:53 PM
I usually decline the extra insurance because most credit card companies have a minimum 30 day warranty and accidental coverage. Never had to use it though and have always wondered how hard it would be to actually get reimbursed if a package was lost or damaged. Overall I've saved over $100 declining the insurance and have not had to try and get it through the CC company.

Fail.

A tracking number doesn't cost 7 dollars, I have no idea where you are pulling this out of. The CanadaPost business parcel services that use tracking numbers start at 7 dollars. Trust me I would know. NCIX gets a significant volume discount so this is how much I would guess it costs to ship an EEE.

Canadapost insurance is about $1.09 per $100. Unless UPS or Fedex or Purolator are terrible at delivering, after discounts this is how much they charge.

Finally, shippers always pay insurance, regardless of what the customer wants. The customer signs a contract stating he will pay what he receives. If he doesn't receive it, he will get his money back. In other words, insurance only helps the shipper since the customer will always get his money back. At least this is how paypal interprets it. I would pay through them. In case of non-delivery for any reason, there is an excellence chance a chargeback will be successful.

When was the last time you shipped a small expedited parcel? Apparently never. I pay a little over $8 after taxes registered envelope going back east through Canada post, with tracking with a basic V1 card.... I'll scan I receipt

It's not a set $7, that was a generalization. obviously it is going to cost more on less depending on the parcel, but you can expect a package to START at that.

You can look in Purolator's terms and conditions of shipping. There is a 3.25% charge for liability insurance.

I wouldn't be so quick to call a childish fail.

The retailer gives you the option to opt in for insurance. The way I see it, all buyers have insurance when they make a purchase, in fact I think most retailers DEFAULT to have the insurance method or button checked.
If you UNCHECK it, or choose NO insurance. YOU, the BUYER are DECLINING insurance... therefore, you have NO recourse if the items are damaged on arrival and the sender has no responsibility.
They provided insurance, but you chose to decline it, hence the onus is on you in the legal sense.

This is the last post I'll make about this topic.

When was the last time you shipped a small expedited parcel? Apparently never. I pay a little over $8 after taxes registered envelope going back east through Canada post, with tracking with a basic V1 card.... I'll scan I receipt

You can easily find shipping costs through CP website for small expedited parcels. For example Vancouver to Montreal costs about $10. Intraprovince or intracity would be quite cheaper. These do not include volume discounts.

Attempting to infer NCIX's shipping costs from the costs to ship your personal envelope is ridiculous. They are not even remotely the same service and CP has arbritrary pricing schemes involving price discrimination. I don't really care how much you paid to send your personal goods and your reference to them really shows how little you understand of this topic.

I'm not going to say how I know all of this, because it would be embarassing. Embarassing not because of how I know, but because I am spending my time explaining this to you.

So quick to call "fail" yet you so obviously need to pull your head out.

Again, the quotes couriers charge to individuals are very different to what they charge volume businesses. On the order of 400%. This can apply for insurance as well. You can see evidence of this in the e-shipper thread.

Again, no. What I said was correct. If you received a damaged parcel you could easily make the argument that it could have been damaged before shipment. A chargeback would work and paypal pretty much explicitly supports what I said.

I don't think Asus will ever plan to sell the HE 8700mah battery separately, they never did w/the H/6600mah.

+
Not sure if it would even be worth the $ to upgrade to the HE battery, the 1000H battery lasts >6 hours w/wifi on, so it won't exactly be a huge gain for an extra 1.5 hours... if that, HE is 8700mah -7.2v and H is 6600mah - 7.4v, <23% higher capacity.

If ur plan is to carry a spare battery on a long trip, u could pick up the larger extended battery(13000mah) from DX or Ebay for ~$75 and this will double the stock battery life time @ >12 hours w/wifi on, that would really make it worth the $, especially if u still carry/use the stock battery, >18 hours w/out having to look for a charger.

Of course, u could just buy a blue 1000HE and sell the 1000H, a used 1000H should still fetch an easy $350, would be worth it to take a hit of $135 to upgrade to the new keyboard, CPU, blue glossy finish, 5-1 card reader and extended battery.
;)

I want the new gpu chipset. :)

Good advice, I may need to follow it. Unfortunately I've never had that kind of battery life w/ my eee. Seriously I'd say 4 hours is the best I've ever seen it at.

I might need to do some tests, but I know it is definetly the 6 cell version.

I know that some of you 1000H owners can't see major differences with the 1000HE but the minor upgrades on it make it one of the best in its kind. If it wasn't for the "9.5 hour" claim, I wouldn't even consider it... Some of you are thinking... 1.60 vs 1.66ghz... BIG DEAL! but it's more than that... The new processor means more efficient in terms of power consumption. I find it funny when some say that a P4 3.2ghz is faster than a 1.86ghz core solo processor.

Debating.....

I got a 900ha from Staples for $339....2 week deadline for return ends tomorrow....going on a trip week from Friday.....

I could keep the 900ha

I could return the 900ha and order the 1000he and hope to get it before my trip.....

it would end up costing $92 more for the 1000HE (paid PST on the 900ha but would not on the 1000he).

The keyboard is not a big deal since I'm a key poker anyway.

The wireless N might be nice....the extra battery life would be nice....the extra screen size might be nice....

But what if it doesn't arrive in time for my trip!?!? I only got the 900HA at that low price due to the use of 2 online coupons when the sale price was $379.

Right now I'm leaning toward keeping the 900ha...

Those 900HA's are one of the last netbooks to retain a true 9" form factor - they really are tiny and cute. Even the Acer Aspire One 8.9" screen is as big as the 10" screen models. With the 12" models coming, netbooks are soon going to be bigger than notebooks!

I'd say keep the 900HA, and then wait to buy one of the super netbooks with the upgraded Atom processors next time.

That is normal, since the GC is applied before tax. Btw you should cancel that order and pricematch directcanada.com instead to save some 7$ more.

They have a button made specifically for pricematching, just before checking out. Scroll down a little, you'll see it.

Definitely! On top of bluetooth and 802.11n, you get a better keyboard and better battery life. It's a no brainer for 13$ more!

They shouldn't charge GST on the gift card, you can probably send them a ticket complaining and see if they can manually remove the GST on Giftcard, but that is not much money anyway, do the price match first, that will save you $7.

I was charged GST too and I think it's kind of normal, since your GC when applied will remove 10$ from the price before taxes, so you end up saving 10$+tax (which you are paying now).
If they didn't charge tax on the GCs, then everyone would buy them and use them and you end up saving the tax.

really?

U should tweak it, which I presume is what Asus has done w/the HE.

-Download latest drivers/bios.

-Set SHE to auto or Power Saving Mode
Press the 3rd Silver key above keyboard

-Set Intel graphics to Maximum Battery
right click on desktop, graphics properties, Display settings, Power settings

-Set wifi to Max_PSP
right click on my computer, properties, Hardware, Device Manager, double click on wireless LAN card, advanced, power saving mode.

-Disable web-cam
right click on eeetray in taskbar

-Disable Bluetooth if/when not used.

-Set battery power scheme to Minimal Power Management
Click on battery icon in taskbar.

-Set hdd to turn off after 3 mins.

With these tweaks u should easily get 5.5-6 hours on a full charge.

U might wanna d/l Everest by lavalys, to see the wear level and full capacity of ur battery.

Here is my battery info after nearly 6 months of daily/constant use.

WOW, Thanks for the excellent pointers. I will try all of the following. Yeah seems like a tidy list of stuff I've probably been ignoring.

Cheers

Those 900HA's are one of the last netbooks to retain a true 9" form factor - they really are tiny and cute. Even the Acer Aspire One 8.9" screen is as big as the 10" screen models. With the 12" models coming, netbooks are soon going to be bigger than notebooks!

I'd say keep the 900HA, and then wait to buy one of the super netbooks with the upgraded Atom processors next time.

For the next generation Atom processors, would they be comparable to an Intel T2200 core duo processor (in terms of speed) that was release 3-4 years ago, or is there no comparison?

Lenovo adopts Nvidia Ion platform for over-10-inch netbooks.

Lenovo plans to launch 11.6-inch and 12.1-inch netbooks combining Intel's Atom processor and Nvidia's Ion platform in the second quarter of this year, according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report. Both netbooks will be manufactured by Wistron.

In addition, Lenovo is reportedly evaluating the possibility of launching a 13-inch Ion model, and will also launch a 12-inch netbook based on VIA Technologies' platform, added the paper.

Well, I'm proud of myself....usually I give into temptation but this time I'm resisting and keeping my 900ha. We are leaving on the 28'th for our yearly family vacation....1 month under sunny skies!

I can't justify the 25% extra cost for something I use for vacation and surfing the net while watching TV. Plus I got it all tweaked out to my liking now.

I was nervous that the 1000he would not arrive in time or would be flawed (as in the case of one poster). I got a good price on the 900ha and can't rebuy it at that price...today being the return deadline.

I'm sure everyone will love their new machines though.

It will be interesting to see how the netbook market evolves....Faster processors and better graphics will be the driving force.

Soon I can see every student from grade 6 onwards having these in school.

I plan on getting the below:

http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=11230BD8752&vpn=RM12864AC667&manufacture=CRUCIAL%20TECHNOLOGY

cheap, but should do the trick.

Isn't that a 1GB stick? You would need 2GB since this Asus only has ONE slot for the RAM

I believe it comes with 1gb hard wired to the MB. So, you'll only need one stick.

Dang DC!! They had stock when I ordered and now they don't. I think I'm gonna go with NCIX.

R u 100% certain that they have not shipped it yet?

And
was the card charged or just pre-authorized, like when u rent a car?

If ur that worried, which u should be w/ncix, just do a chargeback.

Yes, I am 100% certain that they have not ship my Asus yet because I ordered a BLUE one, which has not been release.. And my order status said it hasn't been shipped.

And my credit card was charged, not pre-authorized.. It is already on my credit card statement..

At first, I was impress with their Queue counting during the hold.. I was number FOUR when I was first placed on hold, an hour later, when it was finally my turn, they sent me to a VOICE MAIL..

I end up not leaving a voice mail, instead, I sent them a "service ticket" email 10 hours ago.. still haven't heard from them..

Uhh, what company DOESN'T do that? ALL companies charge first for merchandise and then ship. I have never used an online store that doesn't.

What happens when XX amount of people pre-order a hot new product that is taking orders for when it is released, thereby eliminating stock for the others, but before it comes in an ship of, they decide to cancel or just not pay? NCIX offers EBP, interac and other payments as well. If people were required to pay AFTER the item shipped or just before it did, other business, or dead beats could eat up all the stock from paying customers and not pay.

Or what happens if the card is declined? If they ship and then charge, the company is screw out of a product. That would be an ABSOLUTELY stupid move on a business part.

If they charge JUST before it ships, what happens if the card is declined, or the deadbeat decides to cancel the order or a host of other things. Then they have to spend the man power to take the product off the line, unbox it, put it back on the shelf - and the whole time someone else who HAS money has been screwed out of a product.

The whole pay later thing would be a stupid move for ANY business so I doubt you will see it from any smart or semi automated retailer. Maybe a guy in his basement.

They shouldn't charge GST on the gift card, you can probably send them a ticket complaining and see if they can manually remove the GST on Giftcard, but that is not much money anyway, do the price match first, that will save you $7.

that's 50c ... you're on RFD. that kind of thinking is unacceptable. go back and demand that 50c back! =D

on a side note: you can imagine how much $ NCIX pockets if every customer didn't bother...

-------

I was charged GST too and I think it's kind of normal, since your GC when applied will remove 10$ from the price before taxes, so you end up saving 10$+tax (which you are paying now).
If they didn't charge tax on the GCs, then everyone would buy them and use them and you end up saving the tax.

you sure about ^that?

i haven't used GCs at NCIX before, but every other retailer that sells GCs, there's no taxes charged, and when using them, the GC amt is taken off after taxes are applied

(...)If they charge JUST before it ships, what happens if the card is declined (...)

Technically, the correct and ethical way of doing e-commerce is to only request the complete amount when you have stock on hands and ready to ship/deliver/hand out. Charging credit card now for full amount before actually receiving stock from a supplier is a tad dodgy, even if many online businesses do so out of fear of fraud, fear of order abandon/cancellation, not wishing to be liable to stored CC numbers, or using simpler e-commerce solutions. You can ask for a deposit upfront, but the fairest way is to hold funds on the CC to make sure the client can pay; then when you receive the merchandise from your supplier you can proceed with actually charging the CC right before shipping. This way everyone is happy and money changes hands only when items change ownership! And you can also charge a fee for order cancellation, just to protect your rear end. :)

Still, I understand that NCIX with their pricematching feature and free shipping offers is running a very tight yet profitable enterprise with above average virtual-customer service. I'll still gladly e-shop there!

Dell.ca
Futureshop.ca
Bestbuy.ca
Staples.ca

need I say more?

From a ANYBODY perspective, you CAN ONLY place a hold on my credit card ("pre-authorized") when the product is not yet shipped.

Consider this, I will not get the product until NEXT MONTH, but here I am, required to pay my credit card bill by Feb 28, 2009 which include this netbook.. During the recession, how many people have stash of money laying around doing nothing but pay NCIX in advance?

I am well aware of online shopping and how online retailer works as I have been in the retail business for over a decade!

As some one mentioned, what I really mean is to use their request call back system, if you click contact us, you will find the link for request callback. It is better than you call their customer service directly as you don't have to wait while doing nothing. And they are suppose to call you back within one hour (usually much shorter), otherwise, they should give you 500 NCIX points for rewards.

your pre-order item is one e.g., and the other e.g. i can think of is if you ordered an item (let's say, a surprise special item), and for whatever reason afterwards they run OOS, they'll indicate that in the order shipment email, but they'll still charge you for it

I got a M1210 back when it first came out 2 years ago, i thought it was terrible. I spend over 2K on it and it was slow, and had the worst time with it. I shipped it back to Dell and got an Asus, and it's still running smooth till this day. I can totally agree with him that M1210 is not a very good laptop, at least for some of us

Well, I can tell you that the M1330 (which is newer) is an awesome machine. I got a great deal locally from someone who had won one in a contest and I love it. But I use it more as a desktop replacement and only move it inside the house. That's why I'm getting the 1000HE for transportation.

The NCIX stock checker doesn't show stock for the local stores. Anyone know if these are available in-store?

I had ordered one on Feb 10th, and it arrived on Feb 19th. I just ordered a second one last Friday, which has yet to show as shipped.

Here's my $0.02 about the whole issue of billing before they have stock. My best guess is that NCIX does this to simplify their ordering process. If you've ever placed an order with them where a number of items are available at different times, you will see that they ship out whatever they have in stock right away, and then ship out the remainder of your items as they come in. The billing on this could become very complex if they only billed for each item when it was "in stock."

Another guess I have about NCIX's billing process is that they do have a large # of items on their website that are special order, and/or that are drop shipped from their suppliers. This is something you won't find when dealing with the likes of Amazon and Future Shop; if those webstores don't have the item in stock you typically can't order it (apart from the odd pre-order item or high stock item like a popular DVD). For special order items, getting the money up front from a customer is likely a bit of "insurance" so NCIX doesn't go through the hassle of ordering items only to have the customer cancel a few days later. I'd bet people special order stuff a lot less on a whim if they know it will be billed right away, and then are also much less likely to cancel after they've already paid for it. I believe NCIX themselves are sometimes not made aware of when their suppliers drop ship until a day or two after the fact. So, in those cases a customer may have already received items before NCIX is made aware of the delivery. This up front billing is probably the only way NCIX can offer the depth of products they have.

So, I understand for someone pre-ordering one item that it may seem peculiar to be billed when NCIX doesn't even have in stock yet. For me, and many others like me who order a significant amount of stuff from NCIX (I ordered about 16k last fiscal and just a bit under this fiscal year), I would far rather have the inconvenience of being billed up front in order to be afforded a much more diverse product selection.

I ordered mine on February 17 through DirectCanada.com

Order Received.....check

SHIPPING....... ????????

What gives? They verified that everything is in order and that the product is available. They charged my credit card...... and then don't ship?

I tried contacting them online......no response.
I tried contacting them by phone...... can't get through (no answer).

Seriously.....the price is good.....I don't mind the wait.... But at least answer the @#%#$!? phone or respond to my queries. I just need to know when they will stock up again and my shipping ETA. Is that too much to ask for?

Almost a week gone by and no response....

This is my first time dealing with DirectCanada. Anyone have similar experiences?

Exactly the same situation. However, if you go in their website under tracking, you should see the tracking number, even tho they never sent to to you by email. I ordered mine last Wednesday and the ETA was tomorrow but canadapost.ca is telling me that the item is out for delivery. Good thing my sis is home :)

I ordered mine the first day they had stock from Direct Canada, and even though they don't check off the shipping, they do give you a tracking number from canada post, and I actually received mine just now!! It's charging as we speak, so can't wait to use it tonight!! Their order-tracking system shows no tracking number for me. Just the word "pending" on the shipping section. Pending what? Not sure....

What advantage does one have over the other, pros and cons of both.
What is the total cost for each, tax and shipping included.
If you like one over the other, why?

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

IMHO, there is no comparison. The EEE wins hands down, 10" vs 9", better battery life, better trackpad, excellent keyboard. Plus TD charges me both taxes and shipping, so in the end, I wouldn't save much, if any!

Maybe for fun if any of you can try to get through, can you please let me know? This is getting ridiculous....

At the moment, I can only caution prospective buyers to BE AWARE of this company. I know some of you have had good experiences.....but if I cannot even contact them through any of their channels that they provide (for almost a whole week), that's a BIG RED FLAG. I'm hoping some of you can at least reach a human being there. Thanks!

I contacted them by emails a couple of times, they usually respond within 24-48h.

Acer 8.9" mean smaller keyboard, keyboard is very important when you look for a netbook..

Just to update anyone that is waiting for either the Black or the Blue model.

These are EXTREMELY allocated worldwide at the moment (something about a shortage of the new Atom chip), but we have a fair number scheduled:

- We should have a handful of Blue units around Tuesday or Wednesday (our first actual shipment)

- Friday (Feb 27th) or Monday we will be getting a drop ship of more Black and Blue units, that should cover any and all back orders we're taking right now, though demand is far greater than the supply right now

Hang tight if you haven't received your order yet. If you're planning to order, a back order with NCIX is probably one of the best bets to get a unit as they are likely sold out every where (of course I'm biased when I say that!)

We expect availability to be on and off for the next several weeks. Having said that, I expect we'll fair better than many places in Canada with inventory and allocations.

Also, the *cough* gift card shipping deal is likely to go away for a while after this week, so before Tuesday would be a good time do place a back order *cough*. ;)

I was playing with one at CES this year and it's a great little unit.

its a different type of savings, just like how many stores do them:
buy x and receive $x in giftcard
some may think its a great savings but for those who don't think they will be spending any more money there soon, its just another $10 laying around till then.

If u get the giftcard, you get ground shipping
If i don't get the giftcard and opt for the cheapest shipping, its through purolator (states that its 1-6 days instead of 1-8). Unless someone can note otherwise, it seems purolator may be the preferred choice for the extra $3

According to the information provided to us by Asus, and based on the number of units we're expecting to get, any current customer back orders should be shipped no later March 2nd for both models.

I'll get someone to check and make sure we still have unallocated units and we'll update the ETA on our site, and I'll post a quick update here if we are close to selling our scheduled shipments from Asus, or if the ETA changes.

After these next shipments, it's a bit vague unfortunately when the next shipment(s) might be. :(

Im also going to be ordering the 2gb ram to replace the 1gb inside this 1000e from memoryhouse, which is only like $25 with express shipping.

I received mine today and I have to say is wow. 8700mah battery providing 9.5hrs of surf time. After using a regular 15" laptop for 5 years and the 900ha for a week, I can safely say that the keyboard destroys the 900ha in terms of functionality and easy of use. Using the keyboard on the 900ha was like learning to type all over again, where as the 1000he feel exactly like my 15" keyboard.

I also upgraded the ram to 2gb of buffalo 800mhz with no issues what so ever. Its running at the same 1.8v that the stock 1gb 667mhz ran at.

So far its worth every penny more than the 900ha.

So far its worth every penny more than the 900ha.

are u finding that the extra gb of ram really helps the laptop?

I'm on the very last page, step 3 of 4 and I cannot find where I can request a pricematch.

Scrolll down a bit while you're still at the shopping cart. There's a button that says "Start Price Match". I was able to PM w/ DC yesterday.

I bought a 900ha around Christmas and returned it mainly because of the screen's size and grainy matte finish. Does the 1000he have the same screen finish? I read somewhere that's it's glossy but I highly doubt that. So how's the screen?

I don't hate it, but it doesn't 'sell' the machine either.

I've never ordered from Direct Canada before, I like their fraud system where they call you automatically to verify your order EXCEPT it defaults to calling the home number which I won't be near until tonight! It can't seem to be switched to a work nummber.

D'ooh.

Price out the door was $500 even, unfortunately being in Nova Scotia we get dinged 13% HST instead of just GST... Bah!

Because I already placed an order with NCIX more than a week ago, and they already charged my credit card.. it be too much trouble to cancel it.. tho I should, considering they refused my PriceMatch and I have to buy the $10 GC just to get the free shipping.. I end up paying like $18 more at NCIX than DC..

Whaaa? We certainly don't think alike, and it's not in the true spirit of RFD! You're supposed to get the best deal period :P
Seriously tho, it's really easy to cancel with NCIX, you just request a callback and ask them nicely. If ever it doesn't work, you can always just refuse the package when it arrives and they'll refund you.
At DC, you pay less and you don't have to buy a GC to get the free shipping.

That is true.. but what if by the time I manage to cancel it at NCIX, DC is sold out? Maybe I should give NCIX a few more days to ship my netbook, or I will cancel it and buy it locally at Infonec.. they say they will have it instock by the end of Feb..

Simple, do as I did, you order from DC first. If your order goes through, you will receive it because DC don't sell if they don't have in stock (unlike NCIX). Then you cancel NCIX order.
I did it, couldn't be happier, received mine yesterday although I didn't have time to play with it yet (just turned it on).

The screen is much better on the 1000he then the 900ha. The 900ha seemed very pixelated for some reason. The 1000he monitor looks the way the typical lcd should look. Nice smooth colour transitions without each pixel being decernable. Its no where near perfect though. The screen is better then the 900ha but I'm sure they could have dropped a better one in it.

It is a matte finished screen.

This is because of the 16:9 aspect ratio of the Dell. If you're into watching a lots of widescreen movies then this may be of interest.

However, the 16:10 aspect ratio of the Asus is more practical for the kinds of thing one buys a netbook (e-mails, word processing, websurfing, etc.)

Also, the 10" Asus display gives more realestate compared to the 10.1" Dell (ASUS=44.94(sq-in), Dell=43.56(sq-in)).

here is another option.

Wait for the ASUS t91 touchscreen tablet netbook due out in a month. ( April 2009)

it was just launched at CEBIT in Germany.

It will have a TV tuner built in to watch TV,
its a tablet PC so you can write and draw on it
plus a GPS is built in so you can use it while travelling
plus an ATOM z530 processor.

It has all the other stuff the 1000HE has
and should cost about $50 more from what I read.

I was looking at a new Netbook and will replace my tablet with this one when it comes out. Perfect for my needs.

Since Windows 7 is tablet biased, this will be easy upgrade OS for this thing.

I agree - NOT worth the wait time and possible problem (if you end up with issues with it) and have it sent back, etc... for a $25 saving.

Keep the money in Canada, buy from Canadian business. For $100 savings, it may be a try, but not for $25... I know we are cheap, but sometimes we have to also include a little logic with that too!

Darn it...I bit too early. too bad my HE is already on its way...or I'd cancel it and wait for this one

Yeah, don't worry, there's no way the t91 is going to be $500. Expect a 600-650 price at the least, and that's without GPS.

And the tablet won't have nearly the battery life of the HE which is its main selling point for me.

Mar 2nd, 2009, 09:32 AM
I think the tablet only comes with SSD, no HDD. Plus the TV tuner likely won't make it to Canada. Also, battery life is like 4 hrs.

So, if you don't need touch screen, the 1000HE is better.

here is another option.

Well i think i'm finally ready to bite the bullet. Originally, i really wanted the Dell Mini 9, but seeing it person at BB truly changed my mind. It felt a bit flimsy, but light. The keyboard was beyond awkward and it did not feel at all comfortable to type on.

And after reading up on the 1000he, it is a clear winner in all aspects, it appears. I am a bit picky about colour and i really want the black one. But it appears there is quite a long wait. How long do you think this will be?? 2-3 weeks? Should i just order it now and wait? Or should i just buy the blue, which does have stock? Blue is okay... but i prefer black!!

Went to Stoople yesterday and asked the clerk about this 1000HE.
Surprise! It has been entered in their inventory system. They will eventually have it but they don't have any delivery date.
He said that even if it comes up in there it can take weeks even months before they have it available. The tentative price showns was $445, which he said will probably not be the final price.
Now where did I put those $20 coupons...

A local chain, Dumoulin, told me they would have it mid-march for $508.99.

I would think 800 is faster. but I want to know if both are supported by 1000HE

Hardtarget
Mar 5th, 2009, 01:16 AM
the 1000he uses 667 due to the new FSB of the atom 280
the 1000h uses 533 due to the old fsb of the atom 270

the ram I got runs at 667 perfectly. there is no reason to pay a few bucks more for 800 as the system CAN NOT clock up that fast. (although the ram will work just fine)

edit - also due to the speed of the atom to begin with you will not notice a different at all really if you were to compare 533/667/800

so basically just buy 667 clocked ram unless the 800 is the same price. (ie. this week ncix has buffalo 800 ram on for 25)

If you decide to overclock your atom processor then the 800mhz ram is a better choice. If you don't then the 667mhz is fine.

Incorrect. The memory clock is set to 2:5 of the FSB ([133/2]*5), thus it is true at 333mhz and uses DDR2-667. I imagine you could get by with DDR2-533 and it would clock down but even Asus ships it with DDR2-667. Could be because of cost but the memory clock is at 667mhz.

What's the point of overclocking it? The reason I'm buying this is for battery life. I'm expecting at least 7 hours of real life power and overclocking it would probably bring it down to 3... If battery life wasn't too much of a concern I wouldn't get this.

If you're serious about overclocking this laptop you're really missing the point.

That's fine and dandy when your running on the batteries. But sometimes, you're on your desk and the laptop is plugged in. Why not overclock then? Any extra performance is more than welcome!

I cancelled my order with Direct Canada. This was my first experience with them and it will be MY LAST.

Ordered the 1000HE on February 17. Availability verified, ordered process and credit card charged on February 18. A few days later, I find out they are out of stock and they promised to get me in the next batch. Next batch comes and goes and no shipment on mine.

This is probably why:

Price on February 17 = $443.10
Price on March 2 = $455.76

Price increase = $12.66

So by catering to the new buyers, they stand to profit an additional $12.66 for each unit they sell. I'm sorry, but I'm no chump and I refuse to be treated this way. I do not agree with this type of business practice. They just lost a high spend customer....for what? $12.66?

I requested that they process my full refund within 48 hours. I hope they honour my request.....

No, but I did install firefox and noticed i couldn't use the multitouch on Firefox. I uninstalled and installed drivers for it, and still nothing. I'm going to keep trying. I would suggest you uninstall and reinstall your touch pad driver to see if that helps.

One thing I noticed about my HE is that the left click button is higher than my right. not a huge thing, just something that bugs me. Otherwise, i love the thing.

For those of you in Calgary or Edmonton, Memory Express just received a shipment of these ($459.99).

They're going fast though. I picked up the last available black one at the South Edmonton location. Apparently 1 guy has 7 of these on hold!!

anyone facing issues with their touchpad becoming unresponsive? it's happened to me 3 times now. each time the mouse cursor would freeze and no matter what i do (move touchpad or click button), the mouse cursor remains the same. keyboard still works however.

anyone else observe this?! :(

My buddy had this happen on the one I just got for him. Wouldn't come back until he did a restart. I noticed there is a driver update on the Asus site... installed that for him and I hope that does the trick.

I'd be prefectly comfortable typing for long stretches on the 1000 series but you might not be able to. It's a small keyboard - you can't tell until you get your hands on one personally.

It's perfect for everything else, but it doesn't have a DVD drive, if that's your preferred medium for watching movies.

If you multitask a lot, it may not work so well.

multitabbing with firefox + word at the same time is pushing it ...

netbooks are ideal for carrying it around and browsing in class, but definitely not for sitting down in front of it for hours.. aka essay

How many tabs are we talking about? I have Word 2007 + Firefox with 9 tabs + WL Mail + the usual other background processes and it's perfectly fine.
I did upgrade it to 2GB but that's pretty dirt cheap, and I moved the firefox browser cache to ramdisk (55mb), which seems to help a bit.

I don't know if this is what you're asking about, but Firefox 3.0 and the scrolling issue has been noted. But this guy's problem was due to rumming Linux.

Maybe there really is an issue?

I'm still totally bent on grabbing one myself...it just suck that I get charged the PST regardless of buying from DC or NCIX. At least at NCIX I can just drive 10 minutes to pick up.

did you get the N270 or the N280? Their site specs mentions both...but, I mean if you're buying, don't you think you should get the most up-to date model??

I don't think you can buy the 1000he with a N270. The 1000ha has the n270 but since the asus site states the n280 in their specs for the 1000he you should be fine.

Ordered a blue one over the weekend and received it on Thursday. Didn't get the free shipping /w GC deal so didn't get the printer. Generally satisfied with it. Compared to the 900HA that I am returning to the stationery-named office supply store though, I do have a few things to rant about:

1. Speakers: the speakers in the 1000HE are quieter than those in the 900HA. Little bit of improvement after tweaking the Realtek software but sound from 900HA was good out of the box.

2. Screen: I expected image quality to be a bit worse when a 9" screen is stretched to 10" with no change in resolution but colour on the 1000HE screen looks a bit yellow-ish and is dimmer when compared to the 900HA with brightness set to full.

3. Speed: With a slightly faster processor, the 1000HE was booting and running a bit slower than the 900HA! Started both machines side-by-side and 900HA booted into windows and ready to be used a few seconds earlier than the 1000HE. Both machines were running on batteries and in auto power-saving mode. I had the 900HA for a few days longer so there're more apps installed compared to the pretty much factory-fresh 1000HE. I heard the 900HA has the Intel 945GME chipset while 1000HE has the 945GSE. Not sure if that would be the issue.

4. Power supply: Both machines use the same power supply. While I didn't pay attention when 900HA was charging, the power supply was very hot when my 1000HE is charging, even too hot to touch when it's being used while charging.

5. Built: 900HA feels more solidly built than the 1000HE, probably because of less empty space inside a smaller case.

6. Even though I find the keyboard to be too cramped and not a big fan of the bilingual keyboard of the 900HA, I do like the more boxy look over the rounded look of the 1000HE. I find the 900HA has the perfect size and weight for my need: holding it with one hand, resting the unit on my arm for web surfing/watching videos. Just my personal preference, I supposed.

I still think the 1000HE is a very well built and designed machine though. Just a few minor things when compared to another Eee PC. My second ASUS laptop (F3SV was my first) and ASUS is still the brand of my choice.

Would anyone recommend a utility (preferably free) for monitoring fan speed, temperature, battery level, etc on the 1000HE? I have RM Clock on my F3SV and NHC on my tablet but none of them had been updated lately with unknown support for Intel Atom CPUs. Tried Everest and didn't like it.

Thanks for the clarification.

just wondering why you would return the old one when based on your comparison, you definitely favor the 900HA

The keyboard on the 900HA and lack of bluetooth built-in were the main reasons for the return.

The keys on the 900HA are small to start with. The 900HA I got from the stationery-named office supply store had a bilingual keyboard and the keys were even smaller for the extra keys, not to mention the many extra symbols on the keys to confuse me when I was trying to get used to the new keyboard. Wouldn't have bought the 900HA if I saw the actual keyboard but my local stationery-named office supply store did not even have a sign for the 900HA in store, let alone the computer itself on display.

I also use bluetooth quite a bit, sometimes for transferring files among my computers, phones, and mp3 player but mainly for internet access through my phone when I'm not home. I like being able to get connected with just a few mouse clicks.

Ooohhh I did not know they were selling at Staples yet. I think we heard an estimate of like late March or something similar. I was originally going to get a Mini 9, but then i saw this thread a few weeks ago and thought wow, this seemed like an actually good computer. Now i see other students using the Mini 9 and i think wow that thing is tiny and looks so cheap!!

I think one of the best features is its very comfortable keyboard. It is not cramped whatsoever and it feels nice, sort of like a Vaio or an Apple might. There is a bit of flex, but i hardly notice. And i really can get 7 1/2 + hours on this thing. And i think one common misconception people think is that these machines are slow. It boots up faster than any PC i've used and pages load very quickly too. Plus you get a Sleeve and wipe for the screen!!

I hope everyone got their orders sorted out and did not wait too long. I think NCIX may have messed up my order because i ordered the black version that was "backordered" on March 4th and i got the pickup notice on the 7th. Hopefully they got a shipment in that filled the back log. If not, i apologize :(

Is it wise to get the shipping insurance from DC?

I just went to staples to look at the 900HA and decided to cancel my order for it as the keyboard was just a little to small for my liking.

However Staples did have a 1000HE in stock and on display and the 10' screen and bigger keyboard is a great plus. The only thing I did not find great was the sound. Other than that its pretty snazzy. Think I'm going to go ahead and purchase a blue one from DC. (BTW Staples price in store was $499.99)

I was skeptical but it's a nice piece of hardware. Nothing to complain about except that it would of been nice if it came with a 3 megapixel camera and a lighted keyboard...and Vista...yup...you heard me, I really like Vista. :)

I dunno if these can handle Vista that well.. I installed a stick of 2GB RAM on my gf 1000he, the performance is still pretty sad.. oh well, wut do u expect from a netbook..

More RAM doesn't mean better performance if you're not using it. I find the performance more than acceptable, even with 1GB. You guys should try linux, I run ubuntu, it's awesome

I got mine a few days ago and I'm pretty happy. The happiest moment I had was when I got 720p mkv videos to play :D Note, VLC won't work. If anyone is interested in knowing how I did it, I installed a codec pack, K-Lite. When you play h.264 files it uses ffdshow. You need to disable all deblocking, to get videos to playback properly. Performance is snappy. I left it at 1GB ram. I don't know why everyone upgrades to 2GB. I'll try installing Starcraft or CS 1.6 later to see how they run. I find the hard-drive partitioning a bit weird, but I can live with it. The touchpad took a while to get use to, but I think the multi-touch can be a time saver. I'll eventually just buy a mouse though. Of course I would have preferred bigger resolution but you can't have it all. Other things to note, the device is a bit heavy with 6 cells and the power brick can get pretty damn hot (but it's small).

I don't think those three criticisms can be applied to just the Asus 1000he, but to all netbooks in general. The main netbooks do not have Vista [likely would have trouble running it], 3 mp camera, or a lighted keyboard.

For one, many users prefer Xp than Vista and it keeps the cost lower since Vista would mean more ram and more money. I have not seen a 3 mp camera on any netbook and i really don't see the need for a webcam whatsoever on a netbook. A lighted keyboard would be nice though... but really you should not be on the computer in the dark... lol says my mother.

So, anyone happy with their 1000he or unhappy?
I love it because i can leave the house knowing i don't have to charge it for the rest of the day. While the 6 cell makes it heavier, i think its worth it. I actually don't find the computer all that slow. I use it for when i go to school or when i'm watching TV [where my PC is no where near]. I don't know what some people are doing on their Comps to think it is slow... but i use mainly firefox, word, excel, and powerpoint. I really don't need anything else at school. So for those purposes, its perfect. I have not noticed any problems regarding heat. It gets warm but that is generally expected. And as for the problems talked about in this thread about the touchpad, i have not had much problems with it so much as learning how sensitive it is. Sometimes it gets frustrating when i want to scroll and it wants to zoom in.

I was debating on the blue and black for a long time when it was backordered. But i'm glad i stuck with my black. I think its really sleek, but some ppl may be annoyed with the fingerprints. So perhaps the fingerprints may be less visible on blue?? I don't know. Someone confirm?

I'm loving my 1000HE. Definitely agree about the weird partitioning.

Whatever, first thing I did was blow away XP home and delete all the partitions and created 1 large one. Then I installed XP Pro.

Battery life is awesome...about 5 1/2 hours of STRAIGHT 720p high def video playing with the wireless on and the screen brightness on high.

I have no doubt that I'll be able to squeeze 8-9 hours out of this puppy come september.

I'm still upgrading it to 2GB of ram. Although it is "snappy" enough, I don't mind spending an extra 30 bucks to make things run a bit more smoothly.

I was referring to the multitasking performance..

Anyway, has anybody experience any problem with the USB and external harddrive? This Asus works fine for my WD passport drive, but it doesn't work for my TheBox Media Player. the WD passport only use 1 USB while TheBox use TWO USB ports.. I dont think it is "underpower" tho because I plugged in the AC adapter as well, it just doesn't seem to work on this netbook.. I tried to look for a driver, but TheBox website is down and the driver came with it only support Windows 98 :(

And they don't come to $500 after tax. Macs are in a different league from netbooks and thus are not comparable to these netbooks. The cheapest mac costs $999 before tax. I really don't think the price differential is worth it.

Just got an email saying that my ASUS 1000HE BLACK has shipped from NCIX.

I ordered the netbook on March 4th-ish.

$50.00 discount code still works. Thanks OP!

Can't wait to get it and play around with it. Should serve me well in school this September!

can someone clarify what this $50 coupon code was for

Battery wear can be a sensitive subject w/some, I've had my 1000H for over 6 months now and the battery wear is only 5% and still get 5-6 hours.

But wear level can be all over the place, some have upto 15% and still get normal battery life.

I'd look more at how long the battery last, b4 worrying about the wear level.

Yeah, battery life seems good, I get between 6h and 7h. That's what everyone's getting, I presume? I keep the brightness half way up.

Made a mistake. It was the promo code that the OP posted initially to bring the price down from 4XX to 450 (it wasn't 50.00, I think it was like 30...I clearly failed grade 2 math).

Sorry about the mix up.

Promo code expires the 31st of March. Better order now if you still want it for that price.

So, anyone happy with their 1000he or unhappy?

I am happy with my 1000he. Good battery life (6/7 hrs on max perf.), runs smooths, havent had any problems so far (almost a month), and I like the build quality and style.

Only thing that I am unhappy about is that it is REALLY easy to be scratched. The exterior is glossy black and even a small scratch is visible in the light. Mine is lightly used and already has a few scratches.

I agree with the above poster. I am very happy with the 1000HE. Again the only complaint is that it marks up easily and quite visible on the glossy outer shell. Maybe time to look for a skin for the top. Otherwise couldn't be happier.

there already is an asus eee with a 7300 gs but thats around 700 i think. and i doubt they would ever come out with a netbook with a nvidia chip for anywhere near 500.

does anyone know if the 1000he can be over clocked via bios?

Never say never, we thought we could never got a 10" device running windows under $500, now we do. I'm sure that those with nvidia chip will come down in price pretty quickly.

That's a pretty good deal indeed! With both taxes, it's still like 20$ more than I paid, but at least you get 15 days to try it out at will.

Some people are stacking the Staples coupons and getting $50 off the Staples price bringing down to $400.

I wonder if you can stack the Staples coupons to get the price in-store.

Anyone ever done that?

Using RFDers advice, I've signed on to Staples email notification using a half dozen email accounts to maximize the coupons. I'll wait until I can get the combination to get me the unit for $400.

Personally, I've tried both online and in store and failed both times. You have to use coupons that don't start with the same digits apparently.
