You can use a different credit card but you can not host any domain that has been previously hosted by dreamhost.

Has anyone had any experiences transferring their domain name? I don't plan to stick with them after a year, but would like to register my domain with them for now as it's free with signup...

Two warnings about these offers from Dreamhost:

1. Forget "unlimited". The fine print says that you must use your hosting primarily for web pages - not as a file host, or you will be shut down.

2. Be careful to turn off the default auto-renew setting, or Dreamhost will automatically charge your credit card about $120 next year to renew hosting at the non-discounted 2nd year price.

I think this is within reason though. If you're hosting podcast episodes, that's not against rules but if you start to run a torrent site, then that's against the rules.

Unlimited never means unlimited. You should know that before signing up for any host. Anyway, bit the bullet. My domain got up there pretty fast. Already active. However, one of the little bits on my portfolio doesn't work. Gonna have to get that fixed somehow =/ Worked fine when hosted on my school's server.

Thanks for the tip on auto-renew.

I used over 3000gb of bandwidth one month and they never hand a problem with it.

I've been using Dreamhost for three years, and it is *by far* the best host I've used. Very good support. Yeah, $120 sucks after the promotional year, but I'd rather pay that than get the crap service that I've had from other companies.

This is definitely hot. They haven't had any good deals in quite some time.

(unless they change their policy)
3. You must fax your ID in order to confirm your identity because they ca accept you. This is what my friend did the last time. What a jerk... Why a company would ask for your ID? WTF?

And for the #1, YES, they will ask you to use a DEDICATED server if you're using too much traffic (will make their SHARED SERVER with others users UNSTABLE).

Really? I did a lot of research about 4 years ago for a host and considered Dreamhost because of its crazy deals. But there were too many complaints about its horrible downtime, low speeds, and very slow customer service. Have things really changed there?

sounds like a good deal...too bad it's only mysql and php as i'm looking to build my next site in .net/sql server
might still register though...anyone have any issues dropping hosting and moving the domain elsewhere after the one year is up?

Thanks to OP!

do they allow renewals at promotional prices? I'm thinking of switching over to them but worried that if it's just for one year then on 2nd year it won't be worth it.

It may be reasonable to have limits, but I have a problem with Dreamhost's policy:

1. They are falsely promoting "unlimited".

2. They have no clear policy on how much is too much. (We use our account for ftp of large files between geographically separate offices - how do we know at what point they are going to come along and tell us we're using too much storage or bandwidth, although we are way under the limits we signed up for?)

3. They have altered their policy by issuing "clarifications" in their chatty newsletter from time to time, altering the terms for people who have already paid their money for the year. But they won't write it down plainly where potential new customers can easily read it.

Dreamhost presents themselves as customer-friendly. But I have to say they have deliberately deceptive practices. Buyer beware!

I've dealt with literally dozens of webhosting companies. Dreamhost is in the top 3 for value. What you get for what you pay is staggering, relative to the rest of the market.

I've left the other companies because of their deceptive practices, or their inability to deal with bad situations (power outages, tornadoes, etc), or their ineptitude. I've stayed with Dreamhost for about 6 or so years now because when they have problems (and all hosts eventually will), they are upfront about them and do the best to sort them out and prevent them in the future.

Play the market for a while and you'll see what truly deceptive practices are.

I've been using dream host for a good 3 or 4 years now, in that time a total of 5 hours of outage. This to me is perfectly acceptable. I'm hosting a good 20 - 25 web sites, all of different TLD's (.ca, .com., .net, .tw, etc.).

Their customer service has always responded within 24 hours, useually within a couple hours. Some times when you ask them to fix or look into a problem it'll get fixed and they won't let you know, but that is pretty rare, useually they expl;ain what went wrong and that it did get fixed.

i am currently useing about 150GB of space, 100GB worth of personal backups (I have a subdomain) and have never been told I can't use it. I upload my data to my backup domina and only need to downlaod from it time to time. i also have another 40GB worth of pics that belong to various friends who share them out on various forums etc. I've been warned once that my bandwidth useuage was extrememly high and i shoudl look into reducing it, but that was when i first signed up .. whcih was way before the unlimited thing.

Their billing dept has never given me any greif, i've used credit card and paypal to pay them .. month by month and pay by the year and never had any issues what so ever.

For $10 a month you really won't get better. Would be nive if they offered windows hosting instead of linux .. but i don't "need" it right now.

Agreed! Dreamhost has hosted my website for the past three years and no problems. Customer service and support service is excellent. Highly recommend.

*EXACTLY*. I've tried three or four other hosts over the years, and they were truly terrible. Dreamhost isn't out to screw anyone, and they seem to have some pride in their work. I usually get a response to my submitted tickets within a few minutes.

Oh yeah, good point. They may be doing something sneaky where they retain ownership of the domain so you are forced to host with them after the year is up. Please post what you find on the issue.

Thanks for the info :)

Copied and pasted from the TOS during the sign up process? I can't get the page loaded to set up a new account, otherwise I'd have looked for it... must be the RFD effect.

Good deal, thanks OP.
