Jeep Grand Cherokee has a gas and a diesel version:

Diesel: 31MPG
Gas: 23MPG

So a ~50% increase in efficiency.

I can't say how much you will save with a pickup truck, but my husband drove to San Antonio from the GTA on Sunday and it cost him a total of $80 USD. He drives an e320cdi

I drive a diesel pickup there realy isn't that much to save since diesel costs more at the pump than gas.
You will notice more power and torque with a diesel.

If you are just using the truck to bomb around in and not towing anything it is not worth it.

Diesel trucks are higher in maintence that a gasser.
It costs me just about a $100.00 to get my oil changed it would be half of that on a gasser

Also diesel trucks cost more to buy.

Diesel fuel is normally cheaper than gasoline. It is much less refined, etc; its just been an anomoly for it to have gotten more expensive than unleaded. In Calgary, diesel is now about $0.01 cheaper than gas.

Also, you will should get better mileage from a diesel than a gasser, especially under load.

Other than that.. oil changes are a killer unless you do it yourself; manufacturers give much better warranties on diesel engines than gas (i.e. Ford is 5yr 160000km on diesel engine).

Having owned both, I prefer the diesel, but 90% of the time I have a trailer of some sort hooked up. If I wasn't towing all the time, I'd be quite happy with a gasser.

+1, the additional cost is pretty big. You'll have to drive a lot of miles before you'll break even on fuel/mileage savings.
