My engagement ring lasted for 8 months before of the platinum tips of a prong appeared to have broken off and the center stone (0.90) diamond was not longer there! We have moved to the Maritimes and the Jewellery store where it was purchased in Edmonton does not have any stores here or anywhere else outside of Edmonton for that matter. I am all for supporting small and local businesses and wish in this expensive situation that we had opted for a chain Jewellery store. The jewellery store we purchased my defective engagement ring, and perfect wedding band and anniversary band from specialize in Canadian diamonds and they have stated there is nothing they can do. We have spoken with them on the phone numerous times each time being refused contact with the owner of the store but told they would forward the message. It has been over 5 months and we have not heard from him. Any advice on what we can do to have the company show some responsibility in the defective ring?

Which store did you purchase from?

Was your ring not insured?

I lost my stone about 5 years ago and since we had a policy on it, it was repaired and a new stone was placed into the ring.

Just wondering, was this through your home insurance? If you don't mind answering, how much more on the insurance premium does it cost and did your rate go up with the claim?

All my jewelery and expensive items are scheduled. It means that if it is lost, stolen or damaged you have insurance on it to replace it.

I can't honestly tell you how much it costs, I have always had insurance on my valuables outside of our contents. I have appraisals on everything from art, jewelery, watches and rare coins/stamps. There is also no deductible on these items.

I highly suggest it. Just last spring I lost my ring!! I had a nicer replacement within weeks! :D

What was the store's original policy for warranty repairs? If the purchase was made with a credit card, is there any warranty provided by the card?

You should try contacting your insurance company if the ring is insured, but other than that, there is little you can do. If long distance negotiations with the store lead nowhere, find out if they would be more accommodating if you were to come in person. If the price of the ring is high enough (for 0.90ct certified Canadian diamond it probably is), you might want to take a trip to Edmonton.

8 month is a very short time for the prongs to weaken so much that the stone comes loose. To prevent things like that the ring should be checked regularly by a jeweller, just to make sure everything is tight. You should be able to evaluate the state of the prongs yourself to a certain degree and check for that if the ring gets accidentally knocked.

Good advice, even if the ring wasn't insured (schedule), it should be covered for a little under your home owners or content insurance.
