I'm located in Niagara and am looking for a good garage for a complete brake job. I'll need 4 sets of pads, and new front rotors (the rear rotors should be fine) for my mid sized car, along with a system flush.

I'm wondering what people here have experienced regarding this kind of service? I know that like muffler jobs, the prices can vary widely between shops. The local dealership came up with a quote of $800 or so, this may be average, but I could probably do better.

Can someone recommend a good shop in Niagara, or failing that a good "franchised chain" that has been reasonable?

Thanks

Ok I know this isn't what you asked but...

You could always do the brakes yourself, if you've got rotor's all the way around it's dead easy to change the pads. Even easier to do the rotors.

Then just take it in for the brake flush.

What is the make/model of your car. Are you looking for OEM or aftermarket parts. Maybe we can tell you what to expect to pay for this type of work!!!

Don't fall for the usual scare tactics that many shops WILL try on you when it comes to brakes. If you don't like the quote, shop around. You are not obligated to have your car repaired by the first crook who lies to you, and YES, there are liars out there. Get a second or third opinion...it is your right.

In my opinion, the brakes are the most important part of the car, but that doesn't mean that you have to pay whatever some maniac fishing for phony business tells you. Get the opinion of a few maniacs and make an informed decision. It is YOUR money, not theirs.

They key is to get several quotes. Also, I am not of the ilk that believes everyone is a liar or cheat or maniac is fishing for phony business. Folks that believe all that are paranoid and go through life with a rear view mirror attached to their heads.
Brakes are hugely important. Just because you think you need only pads and front rotors does not make it so. A licensed mechanic is obligated by law to ensure that your brakes are safe for the road, not to protect you, but others on the road. He can be held responsible if he lets a car out with improper brakes.
A 8 year old car more than likely need much more than just pads and rotors. Your calipers could be stuck or not working properly and then need to be replaced or rebuilt. Lines and hoses could be rusted on and then need replacing etc ect. Labour at a low end shop is still $60 or so an hour.
As a rectal pluck, I could see you paying no less than $600.

You could pay as little as $100 or lose to $1000 for the parts alone. The $100 parts might last you a year, the $1000 parts are a waste of money (unless you're racing). I would expect to pay $200-$250 for the parts you have listed (you only need 2 sets of pads, not 4 sets). Keep in mind that on an eight year old vehicle things rust. It's not uncommon to have to replace calipers because the bleed screw is rusted shut, brake lines twist etc. I would also estimate 3 hours for the work ($200-$300 depending on rate). If other things have to be replaced, the cost goes up.

Pete is correct in his comments. I've seen many seized Honda Calipers that need to be replaced due to lack of service. I usually get mine serviced 2x's per year. I, for one will not take any chances with my brakes!!!!

I totally agree that NOT every every mechanic is a liar or a cheat fishing for business. I would go so far as to say that the vast majority are not. That is why I suggested getting multiple opinions. While liars and cheats DO exist, as do some of the greatest "fishermen" in the business, so do alot of honest people, who might err on the side of caution when dealing with this part of the car. You just have to find them, and yes, be open to the idea that you might need more than just a brake cleaning.

They are your brakes, the only thing stopping you (unless you carry an anchor)...one area that I would never try to skimp on.
