When I read the news (http://www.windsorstar.com/News/Teachers+union+furious+with+province+over+offer+re lease/1275118/story.html), I'm like WTF, given the current economy situation, this is totally out of control!

We pay taxes all right, but do we get a say to boot union clowns out or not?

Depends on where in Ontario you are.

From the article linked:
In contrast to ETFO, the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association accepted the offer. “We saw it as a very positive offer,” said Beth Cooper, vice-chairwoman of the Greater Essex County District School Board. “We certainly don’t want students and parents to have any more problems, especially here in Windsor and Essex County. With our economy, we don’t want any disruptions to kids and their schooling. We are very, very hopeful that ETFO will accept the offer.”

Cooper said the lower salary increase is offset by other features of the deal, including: reductions in class sizes for grades 4 to 8, 40 minutes per week of additional prep time for teachers, special education coaches in math and literacy for grades 7 and 8, extra arts and specialist teachers and a commitment to hire more teachers.

“To me, this is a very good compromise,” Cooper said. “Is it as good as what was originally there? No. But it’s far better than what was (at the beginning of negotiations).” At least someone has some sense.

Wow! Another anti-union thread! How original! Let's get out the pitchforks and torches, and get them "unionists!"

"Unions are the scourge of society" - some RFDer, in some post, somewhere in OT.

Anybody going into teaching solely for the easy money better think twice.

First, there is no easy money. Money and teaching are oxymorons. Second, the backlog of over a 1000+ surplus teachers in the province should scare off anyone trying to enter this over saturated field.

You guys are dreaming if you think those 1000+ teachers will immediately take the place of striking unionized teachers, there are laws that prohibit people from taking the jobs of striking union members.

This does seem to be the general trend. The raise offered doesn't even cover cost of living increases. People just love to scream at unionized folks thinking we all make 100k a year, get huge bonus's and never have to do any work.

I'm unionized, have never made over 2.5% in a year's raise and have a grand total of 0$ in bonus' over 8 years. Quick, bring out the lynch mob to hang me from a tree.

I had my wage and bonus frozen this year. Why should I pay for an increase in their wages, considering they already make more than I do (on average). Your logic is fascinating.

So let's give everyone a raise, I wonder who will pay for it...

I can't believe in these economic times, all private sector companies are cutting jobs/wages/salary increases/bonuses, etc. and The government has to gives police, now teacher salary increases because of these unions.

Bring back Bob Rae days! Give the public servants a 2 week holiday without pay!
