Would likely depend on the role, but I am likely assuming he is looking for 'volunteers'.

Freshly squeezed? :lol::|:twisted:

If you need a director of photography, I can assist. But yes, please be specific, do you have a budget or is this purely volunteer?

haha, good luck with that. I was just talking about this with my friend the other day. for those who have already established their work in the industry, they need to have some sort of incentive to guarantee quality work and dedication to the film. someone could come in pro bono, but then if they get the opportunity to work on another project that pays, they'll jump ship. Everyone has bills to pay.

OP, do you have any funding through grants or anything? or is this coming out of pocket?

Obviously. Unless it is for a charity or something, why would anyone do for free what they could get paid to do? And if they can't get paid to do it, would you really trust them to produce something of quality? Same with contests & spec work. Why put in the work for something when there is no garuntee you'll get paid.

well, people do pro bono work if they're they're new to the industry or out of school. they need to build their network and portfolio, in which case they might join on. Or they have a vested interest in the film. Or the person asking is a good friend or really well established director (which kinda ties in to building their network).

Even then, pro-bono work when you get out of school, while it may help your portfolio often isn't worth the hassle associated with it. If you need to build a portfolio, volunteer your services to a charity or something, they can always use the help, and they will give a good, likely easily recognizable reference. This also helps with building a network.

Obviously if they have a vested interest in the project they would maybe be willing to work for free. Same with if the person is a good friend, they would be willing to help a friend out.

If it is a well established director they would likely be able to afford to pay, or have the network to get funding in order to compensate. Or at the very least offer a cut of the total profits to the people involved.

But as far as we can tell, in this specific instance it is not the case. He is not asking good friends, as far as we know he is not a well established director/script writer. Also I doubt he is a charity, thus that rules that out.

I can see someone just out of school volunteering just to get some real-life experience in the field. I think a potential employer would put more weight on experience (paid or not) in the field than volunteering for a charitable organization that has nothing to do with the kind or work one is applying for.

I wasn't saying just volunteer doing whatever. For example, a web developer or designer could help maintain & update their website. A film student could help with creating a commercial for the organization. There are plenty of things a charity needs to keep it running, and if they have a use for someone with those skills they will gladly take them. I know a graphic designer who frequently volunteers to do web design for the make a wish foundation. Good experience, solid portfolio pieces, good networking. Other non-profit organizations or events need people to do this type of stuff. Festivals are another good place to try.

I am not saying that working at a soup kitchen serving food to homeless people will help your portfoliom, but there is plenty of volunteer work for a good cause that can be done in a number of fields.

And again, helping out friends/family is cool. Maybe your cousin or friend wants to start a business and needs a site designed, or maybe they want to produce a film but don't know where to start. If it is a friend, generally there is the assumption that they'd do the same for you, or find some way to help you out if you need it. Again, that would be a portfolio piece, and you don't have to necessarily mention it is for a friend or family member.

OK...

So your not even 18 yet, and yet you...

a) want to start a large scale printing company, despite having any knowledge of the industry what so ever
b) want to buy a limo and "split it" with someone
c) want to direct a movie.

Well, I think supertramp wrote a song about you... something along the lines of a dreamer...
