So basically, my transmission is failing or something, and I'm trying to keep all our options open. People are saying that it shouldn't be dying and that a transmission flush and changing the PNP switch should fix it. Problem is, the shop insists that the tranny is dying. So here's the VolvoSpeed thread (http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php?showtopic=111753&st=20) on my transmission problem.

What do you guys think? Please read that VolvoSpeed thread first before posting, cus there's lots of info in there.

Thanks!

The member Binglax09 seems to be steering you down the right path. I would follow his advice.

Why do you say that?

The mechanic hasn't even said what the problem is.

BTW - The Volvo dealer shouldn't charge you anything to give you a quote(also, tell you what's wrong;)) to fix your bar. Unless, it requires some real work to diagnose your car but they should tell you upfront and you'll probably have to sign off on it.

Webpage works for me. Maybe try when you're home or something?

I'm gonna see if my mom is willing it boring it to a dealer or another Volvo shop and have them check it up. She refuses to put in a used tranny

The adblocking software is on my system. I really don't want to visit a site full of ads. To be honest it's the first time I've seen this warning. It makes me suspicious of the content.

I'm following this thread as I'm looking at used S60s and S70s.

have you gone to volvo dealership for servicing?
diagnose with them, see if you get the same opinion.
or get a second opinion, check with another mechanic

$3,000 is a lot of money. I say get a 2nd opinion from a Volvo dealer. Dealers would have seen & fixed a lot more 2000 S70s then your private guy and would've probably encountered this problem before.

The only possible transmission related symptom I read was the fact you you couldn't shift into Reverse (can't remember if you said on how many occasions).

Are you sure that your mechanic is that much cheaper than a dealership?

For me, the difference is only like $10-15/hour.

If you really don't want to go to a dealer, which doesn't make sense since we're talking $3000, find another place that does Volvos.

One of the places I go to doesn't specialize in Volvos, but he used to be a Volvo mechanic & he still has contacts at his old dealership to be able to double-check on things.

I haven't been keeping up with this thread because of some family issues between my mom and I. You guys don't need to know the details bout that.

My mom doesn't want to visit the dealer because we'd be spending money to check on it. She'd rather not spend money and just let the garage do whatever they want during March break. =.=. I will try and get a second opinion and will keep everyone updated.

I called Volvo Unionville, and I asked them how much a VADIS check costs, but they apparently didn't get what I meant. I then asked them how much it'd be to change the transmission and they said around $3000. My mom said that the mechanics from the Volvo garage said that they're bringing the car to the dealer to get that tranny change, so either way, it's a dealer job.

I couldn't get into reverse once, then there's a couple of jerky shifting when doing a 3 point turn.

I called Volvo Guys, and a used transmission costs $800. However, my mom doesn't want a used one, depsite keeping the car for maybe 3 to 4 more years.

@Kai. Where do you go to?

Edit: Called Volvo Unionville and they quoted $120/hour + tax. It should take about an hour then we'd be given a report and stuff, and suggestions on what to do. Does that price sound about right?

The guy I use is at McCowan/Eglinton, which may be out of your way, since you mentioned Volvo Unionville.

My dealer of choice is Volvo Durham only because they aren't so busy like Volvo Villa. And their single cup coffees are free! I can always get in next day, unlike VV where I have to plan my life around their schedule.

Frankly, if you haven't had those problems/symptoms other than the couple of occasions, I'd say don't do anything till you have them again & more regularly. If it were a couple of hundred $s, that's a different story, but to change a transmission when this isn't a common problem with Volvos, as far as I'm aware.

Get a CAA membership, if you don't already have it ... just in case you need a tow one day!

What year is your S70? and engine type?

With the 2000 S70, base engine (non turbo) - about 1/2 way in the model year, they switched to the 5 speed auto which has a lot of problems because the neutral control in the ECU was turn one, it was fixed in the 2003 model (i know because I had a 2001 v70 t5 which has the same tranny problem).

with volvo tranny - it is better to get a factory rebuilt ones. VOLVO does NOT sell brand new ones, they only sell the rebuilt ones straight from sweden. Do not go to mr transmission or any thing like that. go to a volvo dealer or a volvo specialist. Your best bet for this is a used volvo tranny - but depends on your ECU too.

Ah, it's awful having such a range of opinions about what's wrong with a transmission - even worse when your knowledge of mechanics is limited.

I'd go with the advice to get a second opinion but keep in mind that many dealerships and garages do not do their own transmission work and prefer to swap in a new or rebuilt unit they source from elsewhere. Your other option is to find a good and honest transmission shop and have them rebuild it (Cabbies can sometimes be a good source of advice on this front). Unfortunately, they won't be able to give you a price until they take apart the tranny and inspect the internals but a good shop would catch a solenoid issue or other problem that wouldn't require a tear-down.

$3000 is a very reasonable price if you're really getting a new unit. True, the car's not worth much more than double that but if you're willing to drive it another couple of years, it'd still be a darned sight cheaper to fix it than dumping it and buying another.
