Why do people post 'pm'd'?
If you're going to pm the person just do it. Obviously they'll get the pm, why do you need to post it in their BST thread?
From an RFD deal addict point of view, you'd think you'd want to bring as little attention to an item you were after, rather bump it up so EVERYBODY ELSE sees it and goes jumping on it before you do LOL.
If anything I'd say it is tell tale sign of being a postwhore.

PM'D!!
I think it's maybe a way of deterring competiton? If others see that I've already expressed interest, then they may not bother inquiring.

I think I should go into some BST threads and post "pm'd" without actually PMing anything.

Some people don't get notices telling them they have a PM waiting.
I've once had a PM waiting in someone's mailbox for over a half a year cause they didn't know there was one waiting for him.

The only "explanation" in my mind is that it's some sort of "order" to the sale ... that such and such a user "PM'd" you first, so they should get first dibs ...
Realistically if I was the seller, I really wouldn't care ... some of that comes into play but at the end of the day, if your jerking my chain while I've got another user that wants to pick it up tonight? I'm selling it to them, whether you "PM'd" first or not ...
That's the only reasoning I can think of ... otherwise, it's just plain stup!d because everyone receives notification when they sign on to their accounts of new private messages ... if I was selling something, I'd think to go there first as opposed to bumping my own thread and finding that "Oooh, I've got mail according to this user!!!"
And I agree 100% that as a deal addict, I'd rather not bump the thread and let it sit while I make a move, rather than bumping for all to see once again. Agree with that completely.
We need to talk to someone that does it and ask THEM WHY!

Some people don't check pm box.
On another note: I use to frequent a board with a BST, and if you called 'dibs' in the thread, the seller and buyers would respect your 'dibs' calling.

LMAO....EGAD.
I think you just stumbled upon something.
posting pm is probably the only way you could 'bump' a thread without getting into trouble with the mods. LOL...aww crap., I think this is gonna earn a ruling shortly. Booournzzzzz.

Interesting.
It's been a verrrrrrry long time since I've had to personalize a defaulted RFD account but if memory serves me correctly, isn't the pm notification pop-up default set to 'on'? So you'd get a pop-up whenever you got a pm no? Also, how can you IGNORE the pm? If you're selling something shouldn't you actually LOOK at the top-right corner to see your unread pm status lol?
I like the dibs thing. That's quite a well respected forum I must say for people to honour such things as 'dibs'.

I've actually been a bit annoyed by this for years since I never understood the point. An even worse offense is the following which I've noticed in many FS: threads and its happened to me a few times too.
Original Poster - For Sale: XXXXXXXXX
guy1: I'm interested in _________, PM me.

Hello BBS:
I see the occasional user of this technology use the term 'lol' and am unable to decipher what this cryptic phrase means?
Any insight would be appreciated.

Regardless of it popping up, right beside your username on the main page of every-page that you surf on while on the forums, will have a bolded "1" next to your name, implying 1 new message.
Unless you're just not looking there, most people would catch it, since most times you go from page to page, it loads from the top down.
If you're selling something, I'd assume that you'd take a look there, as opposed to checking all your threads to see if somebody wrote "Pm'd".
I don't like the "pm'd" post, so therefore you can see where my opinion is coming from.

hmmm....perhaps a code error?
I'll test it now.
hmmm...no it sure doesn't work. I'll test on my home pc and another browser to see if I have some phantom pop-up blocker enabled.
Forum Options>>Messaging & Notification >>
If you are browsing the forums when you receive a new private message, the system can pop-up a notification box informing you of the new message.
