School typically runs Monday to Friday, so most would argue Monday is the first day of the week.

I work Monday to Friday, so Monday is the first day of my week. The goverment is generally Monday-Friday as well.

Thus, obviously I vote Monday.

I voted Sunday because well that is technically correct.

I think there's some confusion as to what the poll means. does it mean start of your work week, or does it ask what day of the week the week starts on? ie is sunday the first day of the week (and saturday the last) or is monday the first day of the week (and sunday the last)

According to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the week begins on Monday.

Interesting I did not know this ...so which one is correct? Is it Sunday or Monday? I was always told Sunday was the correct day that begins the week.

Traditionally it is Sunday:

If I'm counting down the weeks that are left, I start from Sunday. I thought that was technically what was right. I start on Monday though :)

How can a new week begin on a weekend?

Only Monday makes sense.

For a workweek, yes, Monday makes sense. But for the rest of us, a week technically ends on a Saturday, and begins on a Sunday. According to our calendar system of course. This predates the Gregorian, and Julian reform, to the Roman calendar.

Also it's supposed to be common knowledge, the week's end is Saturday (although it's accepted when people say weekend, they mean Saturday AND Sunday). Sunday is the beginning. A bank's beginning is Monday, which is why many people falsely assume Monday.

Look at your calendar.

Assuming you're a UW student - go to Quest and look at your schedule and pick "full week". Sunday is the first day of the week according to the university ;)

Sunday is the first day of the week. The Jewish people keep the 7th day of the week (Saturday) holy according to what they've been given. Some Christian groups also keep the Sabbath (instead of the "Lord's Day", Sunday).
The ISO (whatever number) says that Monday is the first day of the week, but this was just implemented fairly recently for whatever reason.
If you look at calendars in Europe, they start on Monday.
The term "weekend" for Saturday and Sunday is a relatively recent invention.
I go by the original week, starting on Sunday.

Churches recognize that Sunday is the first day of the week; there's no problem there.
The Jewish people keep the 7th day, which is Saturday (technically Friday sunset to Saturday sunset).

That's because in the bible it says sunday is the day of rest.

I know what the calendars all say, and I think it's counter-intuitive. If you want to be precise, then there's no question that Sunday is the beginning of the week. I'm just arguing that it's not intuitive for a week to "begin" on Sunday.

What is with all the semantics lately?

But I guess generally Monday is the "start" for most purposes, although Sunday is the real beginning.

I don't get this. Why do people say Sunday is the "real" or "correct" beginning? What makes it more real than the beginning of the work week? That seems entirely arbitrary. I'm gonna go with the utilitarian approach and define the beginning to be the point where society begins to run again (work for most people, many services, some stores etc.). Frankly aside from this definition, I'm not sure what other definition of the "beginning" makes sense, because weekdays don't have a common and/or obvious ordinal assignment. Is it some religious reason? Historical leftover that few know the reason of?

Nowhere in the Bible does it say that Sunday is the day of rest. Absolutely nowhere.

Technically, Sunday is the first day of the week. But, western society has made it seem like Monday is due to the work situation.
But, still Sunday is the first day of the week. Look it up. Fairly recent ISO "standards" have designated Monday as the first day, but that's a change from the original first day.

Props to the ISO, because Monday makes more sense.
