Dear All,

My mom, a 71 years old senior citizen of Ontario, paid around $2,000 for prescribed drugs while she was visiting her son in Saskatchewan. My Mom is an Ontario resident with a valid Ontario health card, and a valid address in Ontario. Her visit to Sask was 5 month. The doctors in SasK prescribed the medications for her.

I spoke with the OHIP guys looking for refund. OHIP told me:
1. Ontario only refund drugs paid for in Ontario--
2. OHIP refund only medical services: http://www.health.gov.on.ca/english/public/pub/ohip/travel.html
3. they do not believe that there is a federal drug plan... (all drug plans are provincial).
4. I found that the SK program (http://www.health.gov.sk.ca/seniors-prescription-drug-plan) requires SK residency. (note: the drug bills had an Sask address, but my mom does not have a sask health car)

How can my Mom get her money back?
Thanks

I don't think you can get it refunded. The Ontario drug plan for seniors is described here:

http://www.health.gov.on.ca/english/public/pub/drugs/turning65.html

As the OHIP people mentioned, the drugs have to be bought at an Ontario pharmacy and need to be prescribed by someone licensed in Ontario. And there isn't a federal drug plan, it's all provincial.

Sorry, but I don't think there's much that can be done.

It's my understanding that your Mom is SOL. If she depends on the senior drug plan she probably should have looked into some sort of travel health insurance. But with that said, if she has the receipts she can claim the drug costs on her income tax as a medical expense. It certainly won't reimburse her completely though...

Sorry totally off topic but why do you refer to your brother as "her son" assuming it is your brother she visited since she's your mom.

for many reasons:
getting distracted by kids, or maybe that I want to do manythings at the same time,.... or maybe a mistake... and for sure stupidity.

Thanks
