Currently use a Miele which is SUPER silent; sometimes I don't even realize it's on!

I'm in need of a new dishwasher and I noticed that Futureshop has LOTS of models for in the 200 - 500.00 range.

Any cheap dishwasher that performs as well as a Miele and is as quiet?

Or is this a case of "you get what you pay for"?

I have a reasonably priced Whirlpool that is very quiet. When I purchased it I was also told that if you want it quieter, you can just buy insulation kits with higher sound proofing (or whatever they call it). That might an an option you want to find out about if it being quiet is important to you.

Coolspot, how old is the Miele?

One reason the Miele and Bosch are quieter than traditional N.American dishwashers is that they don't have a garburator built in them to grind up bits of food waste but instead use a filter that needs occasional rinsing out. That grinder adds to the noise. Also at least for Miele, not sure about Bosch or Asko, they are encased in a metal cabinet like a washer or dryer whereas most dishwashers just have a blanket of sound insulation draped over them

We also went with the Kenmore elite dishwasher and it's very quiet. Believe
it's a Kitchen-Aid in Sears clothing. (Sears number 223 613 159)

I'm moving to a new house. Currently have a 5 year old Miele and it's working flawlessly.

I'll take a look at the KitchenAids/Sears.

I went to a couple appliance stores over the weekend and they seem to say the same thing. In fact when I mention I want quiet, they seem to point me in the direction of the Mieles or Boschs.

I have a new Electrolux that I can barely hear. I have to put my eat up to it to see if it is running.

Back to the original question. Bosch dishwashers are known to be very quiet and they are less expensive than Miele.

If you're going to be using the dishwasher enough that you care about the noise, IMHO you should spend a bit more to get something quiet. I don't think you'll find quiet in anything under $600-700. Bosch is in about the same price range as Kitchaid. Their prices are well below the Miele's, especially if you're not looking for stainless.

I picked up a Bosch from Sears on Boxing Day. It's super easy to install (rear leg can be leveled using a screw from the front). I find it to be quiet enough, although not super quiet; I do hear the occasional humming noise plus water splashing noises. It cleans really well, but I would expect all dishwashers to work well these days.

Not sure about Miele's but Bosch's use condensation drying. It works really well but since it does so without a heating element, certain things like plastics don't dry well at all. If you want everything to be bone-dry at the end of the cycle, you may want to stay away from Bosch.

I have a Kenmore Elite (picked up from Sears Outlet for $580 regular $1,399) and it is super quiet.. It scared my girlfriend cause she could hear it draining in the sink but couldn't hear the dishwasher itself.
