two geeks at Best Buy Metrotown just hung on me and refused to help me with the overpriced crap they cheated me into buying.

Best Buy watch out, I see closure in your future.

Well I bought 4 packs of 25 Memorex dvd+r DL discs ($100+).

I get home and I try to burn some of them. I can't make any of them to work. I have two laptops with DL dvd+rws and neither of them can use these things. I get beck to Best Buy and I ask one of the Geek Squad to help me out. He tells that it is probably a drive issue and that the best thing is to buy an external dvd burner that they use in the store with the same media. No problem. I buy it (another $99). I get home and still I can't this drive to work either with these particular discs. It drives me up the wall. I call the Geek Squad and I explain the issue to one of the geeks and ask him to help me resolve it. He tells to hold on a minute, puts me on hold and then the call is mysteriously dropped. I call again and after 10 minutes or so navigating their menu I get through to another geek.

I explain the issue. He right away accuses me of having a computer problem. I explain that I can burn single layer dvds without any problems, he insists that the problem is on my part. I try to explain that I don't care about blame I just want these to work. His tone is very negative and like the first geek squad guy seems to have no intention of giving me any help. I tell him that if I can't make these to work I will have to return everything back to Best Buy. He tells me that he does not care, that I should do that, and he starts to accuse me that I am an idiot apparently because I am holding on to a product that does not work.

I tried to explain that I held on to the dvd burner and the dvd media because I was trying to make it work not because I am an idiot. No avail. He threatens to hang up on me right there. I tell him ok, do that I will call your manager, in fact forward me to him right now. He says his phone does not have a call forward feature. Right.

Anyways, to make this short, no help, just useless expense, aggravation and abuse from the geek squad in Burnaby Metrotown.

have you considered that maybe the brand of media you are using is not compatible?
return the unopened dvd packs and buy some reliable taiyo yuden from your local canadacomputers or tigerdirect.

also never take geeksquads advice.
another thing make sure you have latest firmware on your drives as well as drivers.

return your external writer, you don't need it.

Yeah. Definitely return the burner and any unopened disk spindles and if asked why, tell them the geek squad were pricks and you don't feel like giving them your business.

Your mistake was buying Memorex crap Dual Layers.

Key is to always buy Verbatims. They're a bit more expensive but will last you longer down the road.

Does anyone use these Memorex Dual Layer 8x Discs?
They told me that they use these at Best Buy with the LG 20x burner that I bought as well, it works fine for them. But not for me. Very odd.

What were you trying to burn? For alot of things, you might want to check the internet for the "settings" you want to burn them at. Since, if you don't have the correct settings, they won't work and you can't "play" them...;)

Try using a different software. Don't ever buy computer parts from them, well internal components.

GeekSquad is a joke! Every time i walk by those guys i see idiots with blocks in their hands trying to guess which hole does the blocks fit in. When they try to sell the customers a PSP I go right beside them and speak out loud to inform the customers that the PSP is garbage and LG and Samsung Laptops comes with 2 years manufacture warranties and already includes recovery disc when they purchase the laptop.

- Anti-Virus programs you can pay your neighbor's kid 10$ and he'll install one for you under 10minutes.

- Chances of your computer breaking down in the first year is slim if you take care of it and if it breaks it'll break within the first week. =)

88% of them refuses to get the PSP and comes talk to me if they catch me outside of the store. =)

One guy paid me 30$ just to install Anti-Virus program for him. it took me 10minutes and he now has 11 years subscription to Norton 360 =)

Perhaps next time the OP won't feel he is 'forced' to do anything he doesn't want to.

Assertiveness can go a long way.

Never had any luck with Memorex ever. Every other brand, fuji, verbatim, kodak, etc, has worked fine.

The last time I checked, this was a shopping disussion thread, not an assertiveness training thread. ;)

To be fair, the original post deserved a threadcrap (until he commented on what exactly happened).

Yep, I've burned a couple of those Memorex 8x DLs (RIT S04) @ 4x, on an LG H55L, and they were fine. Burn quality wasn't great, but it was far from being junk.

Scanned with a BenQ 822 @ 4x
PIE avg: 37.61
PIE max: 256
PIF avg: 0.62
PIF max: 13

(I had similar results burned @ 6x on a Plextor 755)

To compare, Verbatim MKM 001, burned @ 6x on a Plextor 755:
PIE avg: 25.64
PIE max: 213
PIF avg: 0.20
PIF max: 10

Doesn't surprise me. The LG burner I had couldn't burn any of the Ridatas & Memorex DLs I had except for one. That one that did work was subsequently unrecognizable in my Matshita drive. The verbatims I used afterwards have worked perfectly.

For the amount of training that geeksquad members get I am not surprised that they could not fix the issues. They are usually kids of the street that say they have an interest in computers but can't sell. Companies like Future Shop and Best Buy don't train their techs to fix things they just want them to sell the customer something new or do basic installs and push a couple of buttons to create a recovery disk.

I find it VERY ironic that the OP owns 2 laptops and has www.VancouverComputers.info as a sig, yet cannot get either laptop to burn some DL media (crap quality aside) AND takes Geek Squad's advice to buy an external burner - let alone, asks for their advice in the first place.

WTF:?:

I call shenanigans.

and the OP's website is just a copy paste job, lol, fail.

You can see all the "copied contents" and template descriptions.

Well the saga goes on.
I spent all evening today at Best Bollocks with the Geek Squad.

Here is the chronology of what happened:

I bring my laptop with it's own internal dvd rw dual layer.
It has Nero 8, ImgBurn, Vista Home Premium.

I also bring the LG 20x burner.

I also bring one of my Memorex spindles.

First off all you notice right away that the geeks in question spend more time reading the Playboy in their parents' basement then doing anything remotely computer related. The first thing he does, one of them takes a brand new disc and places it writable surface DOWN on the counter before opening the drive to put it in.

Anyways, we try ImgBurn, Nero and Windows itself on both drives. None of them work. I end up wasting more discs. I tell hm to find out what the problem is from the errors that how up on screen but he says he says no idea. Constantly tries to shift the blame to others, to LG, to Memorex, to Windows, to Nero.

Completely useless.
As I said the main thing I wanted him to do was find out Where the problem is, but he could not decipher the error messages.

The moral of the story: I thought these were TECH Support but they are not. They have NO idea what they are doing. LG specifically told me that they do not recommend Memorex because their failure rate is close to 80%, and HE REFUSED TO GUIDE ME TO USE LG 20X WITH MEMOREX MEDIA.

As to my website: it is a CMS portal so it is absolutely necessary to have a template. I make my own templates easily and I also make my own PHP scripts. I have affiliations with Apple, Adobe, even the Wall Street Journal. I have a suite of software that we are working to bring to the market, it is already in used by the CFL. The last website I designed was for a Berkley PhD who works for the UN. My websites get hits from around the globe, when was the last time that what you wrote was read by people from Fort Bragg, or Cambridge University, or Harvard University Computer Lab Admin, or MIT Computer Lab Admin, or Berkley's Office of the President, etc etc. I think that n dispute such as this the consumer should be get the benefit of the doubt because he or she does not have a huge corporation to use to blame others.

I own 3 laptops and now 4 dual layer burners. I didn't want any hassles, they said the LG was a sure thing. I had no idea they are idiots, had never used them before.

Also I ended up buying another thign from them: a 25 pack of Fujifilm from them. Tomorrow I will be there all day until these work.

Problem solved. I now have a fully functonal LG burner that works perfectly with the Memorex Dual Layer media.

One superviser at the Geek Squad was a great guy and solved the problem for me but getting me another LG burner. The one I had seemed defective.

However the level of competence at Geek squad is extremely low. Also some of them have an attitude problem, trying to avoid all problems. I wish you luck if you ever have to depend on them.

To be fair to GS, they are not tech support as you so claimed...they're not there for you to call because you can't figure out how to burn a disc. Thats what Memorex support and LG support can be used for. They're there to sell their services. I bet they would have figured out your problem had you been paying for their services.
