I have a problem that has me scratchinig my head.

We have a water leak on the main floor coming from upstairs. Above that area is the shower and toilet.

We have not used the shower and toilet for 5 days and thus far no water has continued to leak. This morning we used the toilet and low and behold water came up from the shower drain, wet the shower floor and a leak ensued below.

Is there a connection between the toilet and shower drain ? Any ideas what can be the problem ?

It would help to know what floor this is on.

Yes, there is most likely a connection. Your water closet and shower are probably being wet vented through you lavatory. Or, your lav is wet venting the toilet and there is a seperate branch off the drainage pipe to pick up the shower, which may be seperately vented. This sounds like something is blocking your venting system, or the 3'' line draining the water closet is blocked in some manner.

sounds like the drain is blocked
