I'm looking to buy a used car, and need to get it inspected by a good mechanic. At the very least I'd like him to be able to determine if it's been in ANY sort of accident, but also to accurately assess the overall condition of the car. If I was in Toronto / Montreal I'd go to places recommended by APA like:
http://www.apa.ca/template.asp?DocID=13
Does anyone know of someone locally who can do a similarly thorough job?
TIA

Don't know where you are in the City but there are two places in Orleans that have established themselves with a very good reputation.
Orleans AutoTech and Autopro- Precision Automotive.
Precision Automotive is very high tech, they are hooked up to All Data and use wireless laptops for diagnostics. A very clean shop as well.
Autotech is more a down to earth shop but it has a huge very loyal following.

I went to Japan Auto back when Mr. Goto was the owner, I understand he's no longer in business but his son-in-law took over. Is this Frank? If so is he near as good as Mr. Goto was (heard lots of people recommend him back then)
Thanks for your suggestion

I too would like to know as I am planning to purchase a used vehicle soon.
Do mechanics usually charge for these inspections? If so, how much would it cost, roughly?

The last time I did it (over a decade ago), I paid ~$150 IIRC but that included a compression test. I highly recommend one, especially if you are buying a performance car or any car for which you do not know the vehicle's service history.
I trust Nicholson Automotive in Greely (South of Ottawa) because I personally know the owner but a call to CAA should get you a list of garages that will do this for you.
