what does everyone use for their wood floor in the kitchen by the sink and stove? since there is a lot of water splash by the sink and oil splash by the stove, im trying to find something to use as "rug" at these 2 areas. rugs (fabric or plastic) doesnt seem to work since it will be slippery when wet. any suggestion that wont leave marks on the wood floor?

Any time you have wood and you want a rug, make sure it doesn't have a rubber non slip backing. Unless it specifically says otherwise on the label, it will wreck the finish of the floor. You can use any type of rug without that rubber if you get the separate non-slip undermat (sort of looks like netting). The package will say if it is safe for wood floors or not. They work really well to keep rugs in place and you can cut them to size. For a rug, get whatever fabric you like, but washable is best for kitchens, so you can just pick them up and throw them in the washer (the rugs will say if they are washable or not).

The under lay look like this http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/50093539 although the Ikea site doesn't say if it's safe for wood or not, make sure whatever you buy says it right on the package. You can find them almost anywhere that sells rugs.

just picked up some runner rug with rubber back since i needed something quite large (need to cover the entire length of the stove and both counter area, and the entire sink and both counter area). i decided to go with the one with the rubber back so water and oil wont soak thru onto the floor. will pick up some non-slip undermat to so the rugs rubber back wont be in contact with the wood floor.

i still have no idea what type of wood floor we have and not sure if they are finished, waxed, stained, etc... i believe they are finished since they do not appear like raw lumber. just not sure what type of wood (doesnt look/feel laminate at all) and type of finish, so still afraid to clean it.

Take a few pics & I'll let you know what type of wooden floor you have ;)

If you have a floor vent somewhere in that floor, lift it out and take a look at the edge of the flooring. That will tell you if the floor is wood or engineered or whatever. You may also be able to see if it's stained etc.

the vent outlets in the kitchen/dining room and living room all have wood registers. i dont remember, but i think they all have a wood trimming for the vent register openings.

will try to take pics and post. any way to post pics w/o uploading to somewhere?
