I was only able to score one $15 Kingston 2GB RAM at FS today for my Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop.
Will there be any problems if I put it in along side the 512MB until I get another 2GB one later?
Do I need to do anything else?

Actually, you may not be able to POST at all.
To the best of my knowledge for the Inspiron 9400, and this is confirmed by crucial.com: Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.
Give it a try first, but if it doesn't work, be prepared to return your new memory.

Googling says many people have put in 4GB (2x2GB) except the default bios will only handle 3.25GB max. Just wasn't sure about performance with such different RAM memory on a DDR.

My HP dv2201ca says the same thing, but i had a 512MB + 2GB setup. Right now it is 2GB + 2GB thanks to the FS sale. No problems at all.

Did you have any problems when it was 512+2GB?
BTW, I won't be home for another few hours to switch it out in case anyone's wondering do it already, lol.

You can always just try it.
It worked for me on my Gateway (2 + 512)

Nope there was no problems when i had it like that. Everything was much faster though going from 512 + 512 to 512 + 2GB

You should run pretty good. Nice to know you can put 2+2 GB into the 9400.

It'll run ok. If your motherboard is capable of dual channel the mismatched sticks will not run in dual channel.

Installed. It's showing 2.5GB as it should.
If I run this (http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp) and it all passes, it's good to go?
