I was wondering if this is possible or if there's a program that i can download for a function like this.
I hate having to physically print something then use the fax machine to send it out. If possible this would save me time and paper.

RightFax should do the trick as well.

How about email? I would venture to say that everyone has an email address. How about scanning and emailing?

Do you have a dial-up modem?

Would you still need to pay if using it through your computer?

Just whatever you would normally pay for a phone call to that number.

I agree. That's my preference. I usually scan to a .pdf and email. I have a faxmodem set up as well, but I much prefer doing it this way.

> this is my work laptop,

Just look at the jacks on your notebook to see if there is one for a phone cord. I think it's still pretty common for them to have a built-in modem, in which case, all you need is some fax software. Just do a search for: free fax software.

You shouldn't need to download anything. Fax should be one of your printer options if you are using XP or Vista. Print to the Fax and the fax wizard should come up. Lets you set a title page, and asks what number you want to send it to.

That's assuming the modem drivers are installed, but since the computer isn't complaining to you about anything, I assume they are.

If I need to fax something in a pinch, I use http://faxzero.com/.

For their free service, there is an ad on the cover page, and the limit is three pages, but if you only fax once in a while, it's convenient.

They also have a paid service for US$1.99, which has a limit of 15 pages.

I was wrong. It looks like it's only in certain versions of Vista. That sucks.

I have a fax modem in my computer. Something like the one below. I believe it came with its own fax software and I use that.

Check if your vista has PC-Fax. Click on start then type PC-Fax or Fax on the search box at the bottom of the start menu. If you don't have it you can download free fax programs.

You'll need a phoneline plugged into your laptops phone jack. Then to send a fax click on File then Print and choose the fax program you installed at the drop down printers (select printers).

I hope that helps you out.

Hi,

This appears to be a "Step by step" for faxing with vista.

Gosh, faxing with computers was the forerunner in technology back in the days faxing was popular. Everyone was like OMG I can now fax with the computer woohoo!!!

Obviously this died off when people stopped using fax machines.

Why hasn't your workplace replaced faxing with PDFs and emails yet?

lol so i heard..

we have but you would be surprised that we have old school clients/customers who don't use email and prefer the old fashioned telephone/fax method. would be nice to know how to do this so I don't have to run to the printer then fax it.
